Purpose: This research project addressed the need to designing more safe and efficient interior of the future ambulance in Korea. Methods: The study sample contained 760 paramedics in 4 districts. Data was collected by using a revised and complemented questionnaire based on literature review. Results: In relation to the efficacy and safety of work, answers related to storage closet showed to be the highest, and the most difficult part of paramedic work in an ambulance was lurching. CPR is the most frequently used emergency care inside an ambulance, but 66% of the paramedics responded that accurate CPR is not possible during vehicle transfer. Safety belts are not worn for 82.8% of the time, because of discomfort (51.3%). 13.8% of the paramedics responded that stretchers are unstable, 29.5% had an experience of having patients fall off the stretcher inside an ambulance. There were comments on installing equipments to prevent noise, and assist communication. Conclusion: The suggested practical layout contains five main modifications 1. Developing specially designed belt is needed for paramedic safety & efficient work. 2. The seats are molded to be ergonomically friendly. 3. Equipments to secure the body and safety devices for CPR are needed. 4. System improvement for communication between the driver seat and paramedics is needed. 5. The stretchers are molded to be maximize efficiency and minimize injury.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to get basic user guidelines of safe and efficient bag-valve- mask application on patients having abnormal pathophysiological pulmonary conditions. Methods: This study was performed by pre-qualified 35 EMS junior and senior students. Participants were instructed to compress ambulatory bag randomly about half, one-third, one-fourth within different airway resistance and pulmonary compliance. Resultant tidal volume and pulmonary wedge pressures on RespiTranier monitor were analysed in relation to pulmonary physiologic index. Results: At least over half compression of bag guaranteed minimal tidal volume regardless of pulmonary conditions. There was no increase of pulmonary wedge pressure above the level of barotrauma on half compression at any pulmonary conditions. Conclusion: Assisted ventilation with ambulatory bag on patients with pathological pulmonary conditions should be over half compressed regardless of respiratory disease entity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how empowering leadership effects on growth needs and turnover intentions to emergency medical technicians. Methods: The study was based on seventy six paramedics and seventy EMTs-basic who were working at the fire stations. A survey questionnaire was used to prove connection between empowering leadership, growth needs, and turnover intentions. Results: There was a positive correlation between empowering leadership and growth needs, and negative correlation between empowering leadership and turnover intentions. There was a positive correlation between emergency medical technicians growth needs and turnover intentions. Conclusion: This analysis is empirically applied to study the empowering leadership focused on the empowerment act of leader to a leading role to empowerment in fire service organization.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors of turnover intention in hospital paramedics. The factors included the job condition, job stress, and turnover intention. Methods: The subjects were 200 paramedics in hospital. Data were analyzed using frequency, t-test or one way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS WIN 20.0 program. Results: Job stress was 3.59 points; job condition, 2.96 points; turnover intention 3.64 points. When the job stress was high, the satisfaction with job condition was very low and the turnover intention increased. When the job satisfaction was high, turnover intention decreased. factors affecting the turnover intention were annual income, turnover frequency, workload, and working department, role conflict, and personal relationship. Conclusion: It is necessary to establish the job description of paramedics and improve the working condition in the hospitals.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to emphasize the importance of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation. This resuscitation by paramedic is very effectively performed under the medical direction of the doctors. Methods: The cardiac arrest victim was 4 month old infant. Informed consent from the parents of the infant was received. CPR combined with 150J defibrillation was performed to the 4 month old infant. Results: We reported that the 4 month old infant survived the cardiac arrest. Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest infant survived after 150J automated external defibrillator and CPR performance. Conclusion: Specific operative protocol is important because the paramedic can apply the proper manual defibrillator effectively. It is important to extend the work scpoe of the EMT.

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the simulation education integrated with problem based learning on critical thinking disposition and self-efficacy on paramedic students. Methods: The study subjects were 48 students. Pre and post design with nonequivalent control group was assigned. The experimental group received the one week education for 4 weeks(4 sessions in total) with 90 minutes for each session. The control group received a regular skill training curriculum. Results: The experimental group showed significantly higher improvement of self-efficacy and critical thinking disposition preference compared with the control group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that simulation education with scenario was effective in improving the critical thinking disposition and self-efficacy in paramedic students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for the ergonomic design of first-aid activity space(FAS) for a future ambulance suitable for the performance of 119 EMT. Methods: Questionnaire was filled out by the 124 EMT in 119 centers. The questionnaire consisted of 3 sub factors including the satisfaction and compatibility of the FAS. The satisfaction and compatibility was analyzed based on characteristics of the subjects. Results: The satisfaction rate of the FAS within the ambulance was an average of 2.23, and the compatibility category got an overall average score of 2.26. The lowest ranked criteria in the satisfaction and compatibility factor was the functionality of storage space showing 1.93 and 1.88, respectively. The best position of the paramedic seat was the top side of the patient, near the head, which is suitable for patient assessment and treatment. Conclusion: During patient transportation of 119 EMTs, for efficient work process, a layout design of the FAS should be based on ergonomics that satisfied the performance function.

purpose: This study aims to understand the relationship between stress in college life, vulnerability to depression, and smartphone overuse among undergraduate students majoring in public health. Methods: The subjects of the study were 320 students who were selected through convenience sampling from the department of emergency medical technology, physical therapy, and public health and administration attending G University in Gwangju. The study was carried out from October 22 to 26, 2012. For final analysis, 266 copies were used. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS WIN 12.0. Results: Excessive use of smartphones had a negative effect on stress in college life and vulnerability to depression. The stress of college life had an effect on students' sense of value, their friends of the same sex, and job. Depressive vulnerability had an effect on a students' dependency. Conclusion: For the prevention of smartphone overuse, programs to prevent college life stress and vulnerability to depression should be developed. Counselling programs for the groups should be made available to the students.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide an appropriate direction for effective field practice program by analyzing the influencing factors on satisfaction of field instructor in ambulance ride practice of paramedic students in Korea. Methods: The questionnaires were filled out by 204 paramedic students from July 22 to September 13, 2013. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 19.0 program. Results: The stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of satisfaction of field instructor was sincerity of directions. A combination of sincerity of directions (38.2%), achievement(15.4%), improvement of knowledge(3.9%) 4-week field practice(3.0%), 2 week field practice(1.6%), 4 grade(1.8%) pre-expectation of field practice(1.8%) accounted for 65.6% of the variance in paramedic students. Conclusion: We proposed the effective field practice program as well as sincerity of directions of field instructors. It is necessary to discuss before ambulance ride practice within the faculty and the field instructors.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extended job of paramedic after the 1st job description in 2000 by the National Health Personnel Licensing Examination Board. Methods: This study was carried out from May 2012 to July 2013 on the Developing A Curriculum (DACUM) method to analysts 330 responses among 400 questionnaires (response rate 82.5%) after analysing 30 pilot questionnaires. In order to enhance validity and reliability of this job description, 2 job analysts in universities and 10 EMT-Paramedics in hospitals and fire stations were recruited. Results: There were differences between 166 (year 2000) and 240 (2012) in task element. There were higher answering at triaging patient(2.64 frequency, 4.15 importance), calling for help(2.68 frequency, 4.07 importance) in disaster emergency care. There were higher answering at measuring vital sign (3.95 frequency, 4.22 importance), measuring ECG(3.84 frequency, 4.14 importance), wound care(3.48 frequency, 3.86 importance), bleeding control & wound care(3.46 frequency, 3.86 importance), applying O2(3.40 frequency, 3.94 importance) in physician assistant. Conclusion: Scope of extended practice as a physician assistant in hospital setting recommended us to replace the present curriculum and national exam with new curriculum and national written & skill test.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to confirm the effect of ACLS program using simulations and understanding self-efficacy, practice satisfaction, learning attitude, and interest in ACLS after theory classes and simulation-based practice. Methods: A non-equivalent simulation-based practice post test design was used. The participants were 28 paramedic students. The students participated in simulation- based practice for 3 weeks and conventional instruction class for 12 weeks. Results: The students showed higher level of self-efficacy(p =.043), practice satisfaction(p <.001) and learning attitude(p =.003) compared to the conventional lecture students. Conclusion: Level of self-efficacy after simulation-based practice for ACLS was higher than that of self-efficacy after conventional instruction classes. Level of practice satisfaction was also higher. Academic achievement after simulation-based practice was higher than that in conventional instruction classes.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a safety health education program for the upper graders of elementary school children and to evaluate the program. Methods: The study was designed for learner centered safety education and heath education based on a theory of lifelong education. After a model development of the program was set up, five major units were selected after five stages of program planning, design, acting, evaluation and feedback: school safety, traffic safety, home safety, life safety, and first-aid. Twenty things were selected as what to teach, and a lesson plan of 12 sessions was mapped out by arranging what to teach. The subjects in this study were 114 elementary school students who were in five different sixth-grade classes. Each class received education for five days, in four sessions each, according to the program. Results: The learners showed improvement in safety consciousness, safety knowledge, self- efficacy and safety behavior after they received education according to the safety health education program, and they expressed a lot of satisfaction with the program. Conclusion: It is important to develop the lifelong education for safety health education for the elementary school children.

Purpose: The performance rate to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by witness in out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) is very low in South Korea. To prevent the death caused by OHCA, it is important to encourage the witness to perform CPR actively. The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors to affect bystander CPR rate. Methods: I conducted a questionnaire survey from 25 February to 4 March, 2013, receiving responses from 517 people in Korea. The questionnaire included social demographic factors, history of heart disease, knowledge of CPR, and the reliability of emergency medical service (EMS). A logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: Among the 517 respondents, 294 (57.4%) had intention of performing CPR. Multiple logistic regression analysis found the following significant predictors of CPR intention: gender (odds ratio [OR] = 0.390), age (OR = 1.024), religion (OR = 0.843), and knowledge of CPR (OR = 4.734). Conclusion: This study indicated that the strongest predictor is knowledge of CPR. Therefore, it would be helpful to teach CPR nationwide to encourage performing CPR. In addition, effect of CPR education in religious facilities is necessary.
