Relationship of Cognitive Functions and Physical Activities in Persons with Chronic Stroke

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between physical performance, such as gait and postural control, and cognition on as assessed by clinical tools in individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke. Methods : Twenty-six patients who had hemiparetic stroke participated in this study, and were evaluated four common clinical measurements, including the Berg balance scale (BBS), 10 meter walk test (10MWT), 6 minute walking test (6MWT), and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA). Multiple regression analysis was used BBS score, 10MWT, and 6MWT as the dependent variables; MoCA score, post-stroke duration, age, and affected side as independent variables. Results : In the regression equation of the BBS score, the correlation coefficient (r) was 0.875, the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.786, and the MoCA score was the most important variable for determining the BBS score. In the regression equation for the 10MWT, ther was 0.888, the R2 was 0.999, and the MoCA score was the most important variable for determining 10MWT. Finally, the r was 0.777, the R2 was 0.998, and the MoCA score was the most important variable for determining 6MWT in the regression equation of the 6MWT. Conclusion : The results show that cognitive abilities affect gait proficiencies in individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke. Therefore, these results suggest that cognitive tests are necessary for examining and evaluating the abilities of postural control and gait performance for chronic stroke patients in research and clinical environments.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) exercise on body functions(gait, balance, lower extremity power) of elderly women. Methods : This study applied PNF exercise in a fall prevention program in addition to fall prevention seminars to an experimental group of 15 subjects and applied only fall prevention seminars to a control group of 15 subjects. The PNF exercise consisted of three sessions per week for 8 weeks and fall prevention seminars were composed of three times educations(0th, 4th, and 8th week). As a result of statistical analyses, following conclusions were obtained. Results : A 8-week PNF exercise significantly improved gait function and balance functions, lower extremity functions of elderly women. Conclusion : The PNF exercise in a fall prevention program was found to be effective to improve body functions(gait, balance, lower extremity power) of elderly women. In other words, the PNF exercise needs to be considered as an effective intervention for elderly women in order to strengthen their body functions and in fall prevention program.

Purpose : The purpose of present study was to investigate the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) lifting on contralateral leg muscle activities in a seated position. Methods : Twenty healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Lifting was performed from each of the three position. An surface electromyogram (EMG) was used to record the EMG activities from vastus medialis (VM), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) in contralateral leg muscle. The data were analyzed using a repeated measures of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post-hoc Bonferroni's correction to determine the statistical significance. Results : The results of this study were summarized as follows: In comparison to the start position, percentage maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC) values of the VM, TA and GM demonstrated a significantly higher activities in the end position(p<.05). Conclusion : The result shows that contralateral leg muscles activities significantly more increase in the end position when PNF lifting was applied. Therefore, this study will be used to prove effect of indirect approach for the stability and strengthening in patients with leg impairments.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of PNF on active lumbar flexion ROM and difficulty of activity of daily living for adult scoliosis with low back pain. Methods : A 23-aged adult scoliosis with diagnosed herniated lumbar disc. The patient was treated by PNF for 30 minutes a day, 2 times a week during six weeks. Active lumbar flexion ROM and difficulty of activity of daily living were evaluated by the Modified-Modified Schober test and Oswestry Disability Questionnaire every week after treatment including the pretest of the first day of treatment. Results : There were a significant improvement in active lumbar flexion ROM between pretest and the last test. There were significant decreased in difficulty of activity of daily living positive between pretest and the last test. Conclusion : PNF will be useful for increasing active lumbar flexion ROM and decreasing the difficulty of activity of daily living positive for adult scoliosis with low back pain.

Purpose : The purpose of his study was to analyze the environmental and the medical selection factor on rehabilition hospital admission. Methods : The subjects were 107 patient and inpatients. The date were collected analyzed using the SPSS window 17.0 program. Results : General hospital select the recommendation 35.5%, medical team professionalism 18%, accessibility 16%, any others 14% appear in the rehabilitation hospital admission selection factor. Conclusion : Rehabilitation hospital admission selection factor is recommend and medical team service approach.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of bridging exercise and combined lifting pattern bridging exercise on the lower extremity muscle activity. Methods : Twenty-five healthy adults volunteered to participate in this study. Subjects were required to complete following bridging exercises. Muscle activity was measured by QEMG-4 system(LXM 3204, Laxtha Korea). A paired t test was used to determine the influence of muscle activity for each exercise and descriptive statistics was used to characteristics of the subjects. Results : The biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius of combined lifting pattern bridging exercise showed significance excepted vastus medialis(p<.05). In the case of men, biceps femoris showed significance in the combined lifting pattern bridging exercise(p<.05). In the case of women, biceps femoris and tibialis anterior showed significance in the combined lifting pattern bridging exercise(p<.05). Conclusion : The combined lifting pattern bridging exercise was more increased than bridging in lower extremity muscle activation. This result will be used for knee joint stabilizing exercises and biceps femoris strength training.

Purpose : The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of taping on the pain decrease in patient with medial epicondylitis. Methods : A total of 20 patients participated in this study. Group 1 of 10 subjects performed taping intervention three times a week. Group 2 of 10 subjects only therapeutic modalities for 30 minutes. We analyzed the descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA by SPSS 12.0 for windows. Results : In comparison of VAS between pre and post value, the decrease of pain was significant in the experimental and control group(p<.05). In comparison of the difference of VAS score between the groups was significant difference at (p<.05). Conclusion : Taping techniques helped to lower VAS score in patients with medial epicondylitis. Further tirials, which give attention to these parts, are needed before any firm conclusions may be made.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to verify effects of trunk inclination, side deviation using combined PNF patterns of upper and lower extremities on 20's generation with malalignment syndrome. Methods : 15 subjects with malalignment syndrome participated this study. We measured 2 factors(trunk inclination, side deviation). combined PNF patterns of upper and lower extremities were used intervention method for malalignment syndrome subjects. Experience during was 6 weeks. Results : The trunk inclination was significantly decreased. The value was from 0.87 to 0.43(p=0.27). The side deviation was too. The value was decreased 1.62(p=0.044). Conclusion : The results of this study indicate that the use of combined PNF patterns of upper and lower extremities for malalignment syndrome people was positive effect.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of PNF of irradiation using an indirect treatment of the stroke patient's static weight support and walking speed. Methods : Was carried out a total of nine different the PNF method of treatment for patients with left hemiplegia stroke. PNF of treatment is not in the non-paralyzed side of the trunk and upper and lower extremities by applying resistance and increased strength of the affected side. Assessment of treatment weight support both feet measured and modified using the timed up and go test were compared before and after treatment. Results : Treatment of the paralyzed side of the quadriceps and hamstring, gluteus medius muscle strength increased, and both sides of the foot body weight support improved walking speed was increased. Conclusion : Irradiation using PNF indirect treatment improves the function of the gait of stroke patients.
