The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea formally proclaimed that Korean family names will be Romanized differently from the rest of the Korean language in its new system of Romanization for the Korean Language proclaimed on July 4, 2000. After 9 years later when the National Academy of the Korean Language publically proposed Romanization of Korean family names on June 20, 2001 according to this new system, they proposed its second system of it on June 25, 2009. The main purpose of this paper is i) to point out the problems of the second proposal for Romanization of Korean family names ii) to put forward a proposal of how to write Korean family names with Roman letters which should reflect English pronunciation and its writing system, so-called, syllable-based Englishzation, not with abstract Roman alphabets.
