This study is Lacanian psychoanalysis in its theoretical emphasis, concentrating on debates emanating from the works of Freud, Lacan, and their readers, while explaining the crucial concepts that are brought to bear on fundamental issues in literary texts, such as the Imaginary, the Symbolic, the Real, <objet petit a>, jouissance, femininity. The purpose of this study is to show how the subject, as an effect of signifier, is related to the Real being, that is, the question of the Real as contradiction internal to the Symbolic and returns to the question of the dialectic of the Real that manifests itself in narrative, that is, the subject' act against a background of social relations through reading of literary text Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure. Lacan's demonstrations of how the Real speaks in language suggest that <objet petit a> speaks from the place of the fantasy. Fantasy designates the subject's impossible relation to <objet petit a>. Following Hegel's analysis of freedom in which we are both determined by symbolic order and free from symbolic order, Lacanian psychoanalysis formulates an instructive dialectical conception of freedom and determinism and provides a structure and lens for understanding the authentic subject. What is at stake when we determine the place of psychoanalysis in the western history thought, in which psychoanalysis marks a rupture, is a question of knowing. Therefore, focus of this study is on dealing with a question of Sue Bridehead's knowing that is manifested and is at issue in Jude the Obscure, that is, a question of mark, a point which embodies feminine resistance to symbolic identification manifested in Sue. Lacan proposes that the form this resistance takes is hysterical. In Jude the Obscure, Sue is an example of generating reader's desire, that is, of being <objet petit a> that motivates the reader to read the text. In conclusion, the theoretical importance of Lacanian psychoanalysis is the relation between a subject and an object.

Ghosts, Wharton's final collection of short fiction, establishes her as a key figure in the tradition of American Gothic stories succeeding Hawthorne, Poe, and James. Wharton uses the old ghost story genre in a new way as a device of exploring the 'woman question.' The Gothic becomes the ideal vehicle for Wharton's perception, that hidden within social structures, are ugly secrets. For her, "the Gothic spirit is the utterance of the unutterable." Among Wharton's Ghost stories, "The Lady's Maid's Bell,""The House of the Dead Hand," "Kerfol," and "Mr. Jones" deal with women who are raped through language and silenced by a cruel husband or father. To ensure male supremacy, Wharton suggests, language must be kept out of the hands of women. Thus, women's language in patriarchy is oppressed by a form of silence or mimicry without their own language. However, Wharton's women such as Anne de Corneau, Juliana, Mrs. Brymton, and Cybilla revolt against the oppression executed by male power. Wharton's novels in general show that for women in a patriarchal society the real struggle is between a dependent and an independent self. In her Ghost stories, she portrays the desire of a woman persuing her independent self. To obtain an independent self, a woman's own language is essential. Wharton criticizes patriarchy which confines a woman's own language.

본 연구는 양적 연구와 질적 연구뿐만 아니라 교사-연구라는 제 3의 연구방법이 왜 영어교육 현장에서 유익하고 효과적인 연구의 수단이 될 수 있는가를 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 교사-연구는 영어교육 이론과 실행 간의 간격을 좁혀 주고 교사들이 학생들을 정확하게 이해할 수 있게 해 준다. 교사-연구의 시스템은 순환적이어야 하며 그 사이클은 계획, 실행, 관찰, 반성 등을 포함해야 한다. 본고에서 수행된 교사-연구는 전자우편과 홈페이지 게시판 중 어느 것이 웹-기반 교수에서 효과적인 상호작용 방법인가라는 연구 질문과 함께 시작한다. 현재 상호작용은 영어 습득에 절대적인 요소로 간주되고 있으며, 웹을 기반으로 하는 영어교육은 대세적인 흐름이다. 참여자들은 멀티미디어 영어교육이라는 강좌에 등록한 14명의 상주대학교 영어과 2학년 학생들이다. 연구 중 첫 번째 사이클에서 는 전자우편을 이용하여, 두 번째 사이클에서는 연구자의 홈페이지 게시판을 이용하여, 학생들이 영어로 상호작용을 하도록 유도하였다. 그 과정에서의 면밀한 관찰, 학생들과의 결과에 대한 자유토론, 그 효과에 대한 전자우편과 게시판을 이용한 학생들의 의견 개진, 마지막으로 학생들과의 면담 등을 통하여 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 연구 결과를 살펴보면, 다수의 학생들은 홈페이지 게시판이 정보를 공유할 수 있고 토론이 자유롭다는 장점을 인정하면서도, 공개적이어서 부담스러워했으며, 전자우편을 통해서 문법이나 맞춤법에 구애받지 않고 맘껏 영어로 상호작용할 수 있었다. 전자우편이 홈페이지 게시판보다 더 효과적인 상호작용 방법이라는 이 연구 결과는 다른 영어교육 현장으로 일반화되어질 수는 없다. 하지만, 교사-연구의 목적은 일반화가 아니라 개별 현장에 대한 이해이다.
