This study, based on Marianne Hirsch’s theory of postmemory, analyzes how historical events such as war and division are transmitted to postmemory generations who have not directly experienced traumatic events and explores the role of artistic practices in this process. The postmemory generation, while not having experienced the traumatic events themselves, creates new meanings through the combination of imagination and emotion as memories of the parent generation are conveyed through mediums such as photographs. Lee Ju-yong’s work exemplifies this theory in practice by documenting spaces and objects containing the history of war and separation through photography and conveying those memories to present and future generations. Through this, the work monumentalizes the scars of the past and demonstrates the process by which the postmemory generation embraces and heals those memories. This study confirms the potential of artistic practices as cultural mediums through Lee Ju-yong’s work and analyzes how such practices can play a crucial role in fostering intergenerational solidarity and healing from historical trauma.

This paper studies the aspects of postmemory reflected in the animated films of the film director Kim Jungi, <Her Story> and <For Herr>, which suggests a new framework of memory and reproduction about the Japanese Military “Comfort Women,” a postcolonial issue that the world is currently paying attention. For this, this study analyzes the colonial women’s selfnarratives about historical memory and oblivion, and the strategies of historical reproduction through memory, and also reveals its politics of memory. The process in which memories lost and damaged by the historical wounds are delivered and rememorized through popular media such as animated films creates the effect of presenting the past and revealing the politics of collective memory by reflecting the present into the past. The narratives of the colonial experiences and sufferings that testify through the voice of the actual interviewee shared memories of the past, present and future, and act as catalysts to achieve postcolonialism by breaking the boundaries. This is not only to illuminate the tragic life of the victims of the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, but also gives meaning to the politics of memory by letting audiences gain an insight into history and meet history with a dispassionate view. Furthermore, history is restored again by arousing reality as it reaches the points of memory that official history has not mentioned, and by embracing the world beyond reality.

This article examines how Han Kang’s Human Acts reconstructs the cultural memory of the 1980 Gwangju Massacre through literary means, with particular attention to the transmission of trauma across generations. By interweaving multiple temporal layers, the novel brings personal memory, collective memory, and the memories of the dead into a resonant narrative structure. These fragmented yet intertextual testimonies together form a literary “truth commission,” reflecting key characteristics of trauma narratives such as unspeakability, belated emergence, and compulsive return. The article further argues that Human Acts’ embodied representation of violence and pain constitutes a crucial dimension of its postmemory practice. Through meticulous depictions of corpses, torture, decay, cries, and the bodily residues borne by survivors, the novel articulates a traumatic logic in which “the body never forgets,” rendering the corporeal body a central carrier of historical testimony. In this way, Han Kang transforms the Gwangju Massacre from a closed historical event into an ever-unfolding form of cultural memory. Such a transformation enables later generations to continually engage with the echoes of historical trauma through acts of witnessing, mourning, and writing, thereby demonstrating the enduring ethical and aesthetic force of postmemory in contemporary literature.

This study explores the representation of Holocaust trauma and its intergenerational transmission in Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel, Maus. By intertwining the firsthand testimony of a first-generation survivor with the “postmemory” of a second-generation author, Maus visualizes the ‘unrepresentable’ historical tragedy through the unique syntax of the comic medium. Applying Cathy Caruth’s trauma theory and Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, this paper analyzes how the dual narrative structure and zoomorphic metaphors effectively manifest the temporal discontinuity of trauma. Furthermore, it examines the ethical significance of Spiegelman’s critical representation, which avoids the sanctification of victims, and highlights how the resulting social memory facilitates conflict resolution and mental healing in contemporary society. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that Maus serves as an ethical landmark by sublimating fragmented individual scars into a collective asset, thereby imposing a ‘responsibility of memory’ on future generations regarding historical tragedies.

This paper aims at investigating the affect of Irish postmemory generation reflected in Cathal Black’s docudrama Learning Gravity. In tracing the life and memory of Thomas Lynch, an Irish American poet and funeral director, back to the Great Famine, Black reveals the characteristics of Lynch’s postmemory in three ways. First, Black shows Lynch’s desire for Irish American identity as a postmemory generation, irreducible to Irish nationalist ideology, through his narrative construction based upon his reflection on his family photographs. Black also expresses Lynch’s aspiration to the poetic truth in combining realistic documentary style with a sense of poetic time. Finally, Black renders Lynch’s melancholy emanating from his status as a postmemory generation entangled with a sense of tension between presence and absence, represented in the images of nature and objects deserted. The Irish identity, the poetic truth, and the sense of melancholy constitute Lynch’s affect of Irish postmemory generation.

Pablo Neruda has been recognized as one of the global icons who can represent Latin America. This essay studies cultural representation of Neruda and its transformation within the theoretical framework of “postmemory”. While memory narratives are in general written by the victims of traumatic experiences in the past, postmemory signals the act of remembering from the second generation who does not have direct contact or experience. Antonio Skármeta’s pioneering novel El cartero de Neruda attempts to negotiate his contradictory images between “poet of love” and “poet of people”. As a postmemory narrative, the film Il postino, on the one hand, creates a transnational and romantic Neruda apt to the globalized ambience by displacing him into Italy from his home country. On the other hand, recently released film Neruda brings him back to Chile and sheds light on his conflictive relation with the people in order to question about intellectuals’ social role and value in the 21st century. Thus, the postmemory narratives on Neruda not only reflect on social needs at the time of remembering, but also place him in the position of cultural capital.

This essay applies Marianne Hirsch’s theory of the postmemory generation to Jaehee Hong’s My Father’s Emails (2014) and Yonghi Yang’s Dear Pyongyang (2006), personal documentaries on their father’s traumatic experiences during the Korean War as seen from the daughters’ perspectives. Both documentaries underscore the father’s absence and silence and the lack of direct knowledge of the Korean War and subsequent ideological conflicts, two important traits of the experiences of the postmemory generation. First, inspired by feminist discourses on historical accounts and Hirsch’s theory of postmemory, I focus on how these female filmmakers utilize personal memories of their fathers to question the official historical narrative, dominated by frustrated and violent manhood, in postwar South Korean cinema. Second, this essay also deals with My Father’s Emails and Dear Pyongyang as important examples that challenge traditional definitions of documentary; both films consist of archival photography as well as fictional and interpretative elements?fluctuating between remembrance and oblivion or between understanding and confusion. The unsettled relations between the fathers and daughters, in a way, well reflect the ambiguous role of personal documentaries in resolving the gap between the war survivors and the postmemory and postwar generation in South Korea.

This article examines how Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do employs the formal resources of graphic narrative to represent intergenerational trauma, postmemory, and refugee history shaped by the Vietnam War and its aftermath. While trauma originates in the parents’ direct experiences of war, displacement, and forced migration, the memoir demonstrates that trauma persists beyond the first generation, becoming embedded in family dynamics, emotional atmospheres, and everyday survival practices. Drawing on trauma theory, postmemory studies, and comics scholarship, the article argues that Bui visualizes trauma not as a singular historical event but as an ongoing relational condition that structures parenting, communication, and identity across generations. Through close analysis of panel composition, color palettes, temporal fragmentation, and recurring motifs such as water, documents, and family portraits, the study shows how graphic narrative renders affective states and silences that resist linear narration. The article foregrounds how trauma is transmitted less through explicit storytelling than through embodied habits, emotional restraint, and refugee reflexes, aligning with the concept of postmemory as an affective and mediated inheritance. It further demonstrates how The Best We Could Do reconfigures graphic memoir as a site of ethical witnessing, positioning the reader as a co-witness to familial and historical trauma. By centering an Asian American woman’s refugee narrative, this study expands the predominantly Western canon of graphic memoir scholarship and challenges individual-centered models of trauma. It argues that Bui’s memoir exemplifies the graphic narrative’s distinctive capacity to visualize the afterlives of war?its recursive return in domestic life, its inscription in family relationships, and its potential transformation through acts of drawing, narration, and empathetic recognition.

This study examines how Edwidge Danticat’s novel Breath, Eyes, Memory (1994) portrays the transmission of violence rooted in Haiti’s history of colonial oppression and authoritarian rule, revealed through the generational trauma experienced by Haitian women. While some Haitian readers criticize the novel’s depiction of virginity testing as a cultural misrepresentation, their responses reveal tensions between individual and collective identity, highlighting how the narrative expands empathy from the protagonist’s pain to Haiti’s shared trauma. Against the view that postcolonial narratives in the global market risk commodifying Western notions of individuality through character-centered empathy, this study argues that Danticat’s novel resists such reduction. Drawing on Theory of Mind and postmemory, this paper investigates how the novel positions not just the individual but the group as the subject of cognition and empathy. Whereas prior postmemory scholarship has focused on visual archives like photographs of the Holocaust in reconstructing the past not directly experienced, Danticat foregrounds acts of listening, transforming personal trauma into a communal auditory experience. The novel demonstrates how listening enables empathy, opening possibilities for engaging with collective identity. Listening-based empathy in Danticat’s work serves as a cognitive bridge between individual and communal memory, offering a new perspective on how postcolonial literature shapes narrative empathy toward collective suffering.

This article examines Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir by Tessa Hulls as a compelling example of how graphic narrative functions as a medium for representing trauma, postmemory, and healing across generations. Through close analysis of Hulls’ formal strategies?such as panel fragmentation, visual metaphor, and temporal layering?the study explores how graphic narrative expresses the psychological complexity of inherited trauma in ways traditional narrative forms cannot. Drawing on the work of Caruth, LaCapra, Hirsch, McCloud, and Chute, the article situates Feeding Ghosts within broader conversations about trauma theory, postmemory, and the visual language of comics. The memoir traces the intergenerational effects of political persecution, displacement, and mental illness beginning with Hulls’ grandmother, Sun Yi, who was traumatized by the Communist regime in post-revolutionary China. This trauma is inherited by her daughter, Rose, and subsequently by Hulls herself. The narrative visualizes how such trauma manifests across time as emotional entanglement, psychological rupture, and fragmented memory. Hulls uses bleeding panels, recurring motifs, and photographic integration to collapse temporal boundaries and highlight the recursive nature of postmemory. In addition to representation, the article considers how the act of drawing enables Hulls to “work through” familial trauma. By transforming personal history into visual narrative, she reclaims agency over her inherited story. The article argues that graphic narrative, through its multimodal form, offers distinct affordances for articulating and processing intergenerational trauma?allowing artists to both bear witness to and reshape the legacies of pain they carry.

This paper examines the transnational turn in comfort women cinema through close analysis of four films: Spirits’ Homecoming (2015), Snowy Road (2015), I Can Speak (2017), and The Apology (2016). Drawing on Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory and Alison Landsberg’s theory of prosthetic memory, this paper argues that comfort women cinema has shifted from nationalist mourning narratives centered on colonial injury toward transnational memory projects foregrounding testimony, legal accountability, and cross-cultural solidarity. Where existing scholarship has examined comfort women memory primarily through activism and memorialization, this paper attends to cinema as a formal and ideological site, tracing how generic choices, modes of address, and representational strategies have reorganized the dominant terms of this history’s transmission. While Spirits’ Homecoming instantiates a nationalist mourning paradigm and The Apology advances a transnational testimony paradigm, Snowy Road and I Can Speak occupy complex positions between these frameworks, negotiating generic constraints and testimonial ambitions. Directed by a Chinese Canadian filmmaker and documenting survivors from South Korea, China, and the Philippines, The Apology in particular demonstrates that comfort women memory has become a genuinely transnational site of contestation, one that can no longer be contained within the bilateral logic of Korea-Japan relations.

This article endeavors to unravel how memorial museums, representing the traumatic epochs of the Japanese colonial occupation and commemorating its victims, can catalyze visitor engagement in the transmission of collective memory. The crux of this inquiry centers on the postmemory Generation MZ’s cultural memory of Japanese repression during the colonial era. The main argument is that, to effectively engage Generation MZ?a demographic distinct in its temporal detachment from the events yet deeply enmeshed in its cultural aftermath?memorial museums must undertake a dramatic transformation in their exhibition content organization. Memorial museums are tasked with curating content that not only resonates with Generation MZ’s interest in the Japanese colonial period but also integrating their narratives and identities, which have been invariably shaped by the historical legacies. By embedding the stories and lived experiences of Generation MZ within the broader narrative of the exhibits, these museums can transform into dynamic spaces where past and present converge. Here, the generation that directly experienced these events and the subsequent postmemory generation can engage in meaningful dialogues, fostering a shared understanding of history. Such a transformation would mark a departure from a unidirectional, authoritative educational approach, replacing it with a model of interactive and participatory communication. This approach not only honors the complexity of historical events but also acknowledges the evolving nature of memory and identity in the context of generational shifts.

The Gwangju Democratization Movement is often remembered as a symbolic event of the Korean democratization movement. However, the movement had been prohibited from enunciating in the public memory for a long while after the event. Instead, works of Korean literature and films represented the feeling of liberation, fear, beholdenness, violation, and traumatic experiences of experienced people of the event. In these works, it was important to listen to testimonies from those who experienced the event and remember their agonies and the spirit of resistance. However, on the contrary to those representational works which tried to remember the voices of the experienced people, there are several outstanding recent works from young generations who did not directly experience the periods but shared its memory. These young generations distinguish themselves from the directly experienced generation, overcoming the serious manner for the democratization movement, which was fueled by the first generation. A feminist Holocaust scholar, Marianne Hirsch refers to these non-experienced generations as “post-generations” and calls their works as “postmemorial works.” This article will discuss the way of remembering in these postmemorial works, mainly focusing on Kim-Gun (Sangwoo Kang, 2019) compared to other postmemorial works about the Gwangju Democratization Movement. The documentary Kim- Gun makes an effort to find a real person who was pictured in photos taken by a photojournalist during the event in 1980. To do so, the crews of the documentary meet the directly experienced people of the event and have interviews with them, with a desperate expectation to reveal the truth of the events in the age of “post-truth” which faces fake news overflow. However, it is revealed, at the end, that there is something more important than finding the truth. In this way, the documentary shows how post-generations get the feeling of implication in the traumatic history beyond Hirsch’s affiliation in post-memory.

This essay analyzes the actions through which the protagonist Milkman in Morrison’s novel Song of Solomon perceives previous generations’ traumatic experience and tries to incorporate it into his life, referring to Marianne Hirsch’s notion of “postmemory.” The ultimate aim of this work is to reveal that this “postmemory” work is linked with the broader scope of other people’s experiences of pain and to draw out the practical meaning implicit in the notion of postmemory. Hirsch’s notion of postmemory is a kind of intergenerational memory work through which a parental generation’s traumatic memories are transferred to the next generation. Postmemory is noted for its inseparable bond to the past, yet this bond is fragmentary and indirect. Postmemory represents the deferred effects of trauma and the transmission of trauma to individuals and communities that are at least one generation away from the experienced trauma. Mediation must be posited in postmemory with the character of the deferred effects of trauma. This essay describes the possibility that people who do not experience trauma directly can still experience it through a mechanism operated by belatedness, replacement, vicariousness, and mediation. In Hirsch’s notion of postmemory, these are constitutive elements that enable the intergenerational transmission of trauma. This essay reveals the postmemory work, finding the more expansive meaning implicit in Hirsch’s postmemory and applying it to the process of transformation in Milkman’s actions and identity. In this regard, the discussion highlights Milkman’s changed appearance, which is shown in the process of his efforts to perceive and reappropriate his parents’ trauma as well as the pain of his remote ancestors and others.

This study examines the discourse of postmemory by addressing its central theoretical developments and socio-political concerns in three interrelated ways. First, it clarifies common misconceptions surrounding the concept. Whereas previous scholarship has tended to confine postmemory to trauma and the past within the bounded spheres of individuals, families, and nations, this study repositions it more firmly in the concepts of hope, future, and multidirectional solidarity. Second, it explores how the postgeneration both engages in and critically reflects upon postmemory work in the pursuit of social justice. For transformative justice to be realized, the postgeneration must recognize its diachronic and synchronic implicatedness in historical injustice, as well as interrogate the teleological narratives, politics of apology, and screen memories embedded in current postmemory practices. Finally, the study analyzes practical strategies that combine postmemory work with activism. It argues that the aesthetic dimensions of postmemory hold the potential to resuscitate suppressed historical possibilities and to foster tangible changes in social institutions and everyday life.

William Trevor’s Fools of Fortune reveals how memory narratives can perpetuate conflicts. Through narratives such as the prememory and postmemory, the memories of the traumatic events in Kilneagh are shared and conveyed from one generation to another. The narrative which has been shaped with hatred and anger can harm the postgeneration. These memories can negatively affect the generation who came after the tragic events. Their own life stories are displaced and evacuated by their ancestors’. Trevor argues that tragedies can repeat if one conveys one’s resentment to later generations. (

Leila S. Chudori’s Pulang (2012) dramatizes the long afterlife of the 1965 event and the subsequent New Order regime, showing how state?inflicted trauma reaches beyond direct witnesses. Centering on Dimas, a stateless exile marked by silence, and his daughter Lintang, this article examines how trauma is transmitted when experiential access is absent. Drawing on Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, it analyzes Lintang’s absorption of fragmented traces of her father’s past and their reassembly through documentary filmmaking. The study argues that her trajectory signals a shift from familial postmemory rooted in kinship based affect to affiliative postmemory, in which she assumes ethical responsibility for testimonies beyond her lineage. By tracing Lintang’s move from affective disturbance to investigative action and public narration, Pulang illustrates postmemory not as mechanical transfer but as imaginative investment and social practice. The novel thus demonstrates literature’s capacity to reopen silenced histories and renegotiate collective memory in a post-authoritarian context.

As the 70th anniversary of the armistice of the Korean War is coming, memories of the war are facing polarization. Although memory of experience is about to extinct, the past is becoming more active through the translation of cultural memory, rather than being forgotten. Ha Jin’s novel War Trash(2004) and Choi Soo-cheol’s serial novels, the Dance of POWs(2013), which are based on the theme of memories of the Korean War POWs, have many similarities. The two works revive the memories of war prisoners from a different perspective, which differs from the official narrative, by mixing fiction and the knowledge obtained from documents and testimonies in the frame of the family narrative. In War Trash, a memoir of the People’s Volunteer Army soldier, the individual postmemory is incorporated into the immigrant family narrative and remains as the memory of a minority. On the other hand, in the Dance of POWs, the story of the Korean People’s Army soldier and his daughter, the individual’s post-memory is on the verge of extinction along with the roughly torn family history, but becomes a counter-memory by urging the people involved to remember. Despite these differences, the two works eventually join the common dimension through transferring postmemory to readers. The two writers talked about the unwritten history of prisoners of the Korean War by finding, reflecting, and rewriting their memories hidden or forgotten in long silence.
