With the increasing adoption of Electric Vehicles (EV), fire accidents are also on the rise. Consequently, the development of investigative techniques to scientifically determine the causes of fires is becoming increasingly important. Because EV batteries are organically connected to the vehicle's electrical components and wiring, failures such as short circuits in high-voltage electrical components can transmit electrical shocks to the battery. Terminal fuses installed in battery packs not only function as circuit protection devices but also provide valuable evidence reflecting the electrical conditions before and after a fire. This study suggests that analyzing the fuse melting pattern can be a key clue in identifying the cause of fire in EV fire investigations. By analyzing microscopic traces of thermal, electrical, and physical damage on fuse elements using precision analytical equipment, we explored distinguishing factors for each cause of damage.

Recently, data centers have become a core social and economic infrastructure, driven by the rapid advancement of so-called ICBM technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, big data, mobile, and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the acceleration of digital transformation. To ensure service continuity in data centers, uninterrupted, high-quality power supply is essential, and online AC (alternating current) UPSs have typically been utilized for this purpose. However, the recent increase in the adoption of rack-based DC (direct current) UPSs and lithium-ion batteries to improve power conversion efficiency has raised the risk of fire that is different from that of existing facilities. Lithium-ion batteries offer high energy density, but are vulnerable to thermal runaway, a phenomenon that causes rapid temperature rises and the release of flammable gases when internal cell shorts or overcharge. In particular, rack-based systems have batteries placed adjacent to the server rack, so the fire spread path is different from that of conventional AC UPS systems. Systematic fire prevention technology that detects off-gas generated when the electrolyte inside the battery vaporizes in advance rather than simply suppressing it is attracting attention as the key to prevention. Despite the fact that UPS fires are no longer an anomaly, actual fire investigations and forensic capabilities remain challenging in the field, adapting to technological changes. This study aims to effectively respond to the rapidly increasing number of UPS fires and enhance the scientific forensic capabilities of fire investigators. To this end, we propose the design and specific application of UPS training equipment that simulates a real-world data center environment. By enhancing the expertise of fire investigators through hands-on training, we aim to contribute to systematic cause identification and the establishment of effective preventive measures, thereby enhancing the reliability of fire investigation work overall.
