Too Much Information – Trying to Help or Deceive? An Analysis of Yelp Reviews

The proliferation of online customer reviews has completely changed how consumers purchase. Consumers now heavily depend on authentic experiences shared by previous customers. However, deceptive reviews that aim to manipulate customer decision-making to promote or defame a product or service pose a risk to businesses and buyers. The studies investigating consumer perception of deceptive reviews found that one of the important cues is based on review content. This study aims to investigate the impact of the information amount of review on the review truthfulness. This study adopted the Information Manipulation Theory (IMT) as an overarching theory, which asserts that the violations of one or more of the Gricean maxim are deceptive behaviors. It is regarded as a quantity violation if the required information amount is not delivered or more information is delivered; that is an attempt at deception. A topic modeling algorithm is implemented to reveal the distribution of each topic embedded in a text. This study measures information amount as topic diversity based on the results of topic modeling, and topic diversity shows how heterogeneous a text review is. Two datasets of restaurant reviews on Yelp.com, which have Filtered (deceptive) and Unfiltered (genuine) reviews, were used to test the hypotheses. Reviews that contain more diverse topics tend to be truthful. However, excessive topic diversity produces an inverted U-shaped relationship with truthfulness. Moreover, we find an interaction effect between topic diversity and reviews’ ratings. This result suggests that the impact of topic diversity is strengthened when deceptive reviews have lower ratings. This study contributes to the existing literature on IMT by building the connection between topic diversity in a review and its truthfulness. In addition, the empirical results show that topic diversity is a reliable measure for gauging information amount of reviews.

One of the emerging trends in the marketing field is digital video marketing. Online videos offer rich content typically containing more information than any other type of content (e.g., audible or textual content). Accordingly, previous researchers have examined factors influencing videos’ popularity. However, few studies have examined what causes a video to remain popular. Some videos achieve continuous, ongoing popularity, while others fade out quickly. For practitioners, videos at the recommendation slots may serve as strong communication channels, as many potential consumers are exposed to such videos. So,this study will provide practitioners important advice regarding how to choose videos that will survive as long-lasting favorites, allowing them to advertise in a cost-effective manner. Using deep learning techniques, this study extracts text from videos and measured the videos’ tones, including factual and emotional tones. Additionally, we measure the aesthetic score by analyzing the thumbnail images in the data. We then empirically show that the cognitive features of a video, such as the tone of a message and the aesthetic assessment of a thumbnail image, play an important role in determining videos’ long-term popularity. We believe that this is the first study of its kind to examine new factors that aid in ensuring a video remains popular using both deep learning and econometric methodologies.

This study is about the attitudes and intentions of consumers considering the usage of O2O application (app) under the COVID-19 situation. By integrating TAM and TPB as a theoretical background, we selected VPC (various product choice) and PII (product information intensity) as new functional external variables that have a positive effect on new system called O2O commerce. We also applied the transaction cost theory to investigate the obstacle of O2O business. We conducted a survey of consumers in large cities in the Korean market. As a result of this study, it was found that the more O2O app users recognized the influence of SN (subject norms), the more useful O2O app was, the more it led to a change in attitude and usage intention was positively significant. In addition, as the O2O app was easy to use and useful, and the SN was recognized, the user’s attitude was positive. On the other hand, it was also found that the transaction cost that consumers have to pay had a negative effect on usage intention. Additionally, VPC and PII have been shown to positively influence on usefulness of O2O apps.

Mobile TV refers to the service that provides live broadcasting and video-on-demand content through a mobile device. In addition to the advertisement as the early-stage revenue model, the paid subscription model has emerged as a more sustainable revenue source for mobile TV services. In this study, with the surveys of 450 free mobile TV users, we examine the motivational factors influencing their intention to adopt a paid subscription model. Results show that three extrinsic motivations, price fairness, subjective norm, and mobile TV utilization, are positively associated with free users’ paid subscription intention. In contrast, intrinsic motivations, such as hedonic need, spatiotemporal convenience, and self-efficacy, have no significant influence on the intention. We also found that the expected value is positively associated with attitude toward mobile TV service, also positively influencing the paid subscription intention.

This study attempts to extend the customer value – customer satisfaction – customer loyalty framework by introducing key constructs of scarcity messages as a major environmental stimulus and the urge to buy impulsively as its response in the context of group-buying social commerce, across countries including Korea and China. More specifically, this study proposes that scarcity messages influence customers’ value perception (i.e., utilitarian value and hedonic value) and thereby influencing customer satisfaction and further customer loyalty. Moreover, the study suggests that scarcity messages and utilitarian and hedonic values arouse the urge to buy impulsively. In the Korean sample, the results show that scarcity messages increase both utilitarian and hedonic values as well as the urge to buy impulsively, which in turn leads to customers’ satisfaction and further loyalty. Besides, customer satisfaction is determined by utilitarian value, not hedonic value. In the Chinese sample, utilitarian value-related relationships are insignificant. More specifically, scarcity messages only influence hedonic value which increases the urge to buy impulsively. Besides, customer satisfaction is determined by both utilitarian and hedonic values, but not by the urge to buy impulsively.

This study aimed to examine the factors of information-sharing intention on social networking sites (SNSs) by integrating the perspectives of the institution-based trust, social presence, and theory of reasoned action (TRA). An empirical survey was conducted and 364 valid respondents were collected from Facebook (FB) users in Taiwan. These data were analyzed against the research model using the partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modeling. The findings revealed that situational normality and structural assurance have a positive influenced user trust in SNSs which in turn increased their information-sharing attitudes. Furthermore, the subjective norms, user information-sharing attitudes and social presence of the SNSs were shown to have a positive influenced on user information sharing intention. Finally, this study provided several important theoretical and practical implications to understand factors affecting information-sharing intention on SNSs.

Social distancing required the use of doorstep delivery for nearly all purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign users in Korea are forced to participate in superfluous tasks, leading to an increase in their anxiety and fatigue while online shopping. This study examines how digital shadow work stemming from the language barrier can affect the emotions and behaviors of foreign shoppers that use Korean shopping sites. By interviewing 37 foreign users in Korea, this draft examined their experiences, behaviors, and emotional output, classifying them into 14 codes and seven categories. Using grounded theory, we found that online shoppers’ emotions, feelings, experiences, and decision making may be changed in the stages of the pre-use, use, and post-use activities. User responses regarding shadow work and related obstacles can be seen with the continue, discontinue, and optional (occasional use) of Korean online shopping sites. Pleasure and satisfaction come from high efficiency and privileges, whereas anger and disappointment come from poor self-confidence and pessimism. Furthermore, buyer behavior and product orientation are identified as intervening conditions, while the online vs. offline shopping experiences are identified as contextual conditions. In conclusion, language barriers and other factors make online shopping difficult for foreign shoppers, which negatively affects their psychological mechanisms and buying behaviors. The implications from the study findings and future research are also discussed.

Many organizations facilitate a host of online knowledge sharing communities to assist internal knowledge sharing and operation. The permeable boundaries and voluntary structures of online communities allow individuals to span community boundaries and affect member resources and structures. Although much research has been done on members’ knowledge contribution in online communities, relatively little is known about how a member’s contribution to a community is shaped by the cross-level interactions of member’s external boundary spanning and the community’s environmental scanning or membership fluidity. Drawing from the theoretical lens of boundary spanning and the external view of online communities, we take a multi-level approach in the analysis of the activities of 1,992 members of 126 communities internal to a global company. We find that a member’s external boundary spanning activity (e.g., external knowledge acquisition via reading posts) has a positive effect, though at a decreasing rate, on subsequent internal knowledge contribution (e.g., posting replies in the member’s home community). This positive effect is stronger in communities that are more active in environmental scanning or have fluid membership and weaker in communities that are less active in environmental scanning or have stable membership.

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) have been acknowledged to play a key role in promoting innovation and economic development. In Peru, 99.5% of formal firms are MSMEs, thus promoting innovation in these firms could have a significant impact on the Peruvian economy. In spite of Innovate Peru’s efforts, Peru is still one of the countries that invests the least in innovation, with MSMEs offering low value added. Innovate Peru has launched programs (technological missions) to improve MSMEs’ innovation through technology- transfer-oriented subsidies, which may strengthen companies’ absorptive capacity (AC) and thus their capabilities to identify and integrate internal and external knowledge. This study assesses the impact of these programs on MSMEs. Data were collected from 85 MSMEs that participated in Innovate Peru’s technological missions between 2014 and 2016. Findings show that all the dimensions of AC have a positive impact on innovation; however, the impact of economic subsidy was found to be non-significant. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Sustainable Information Technology (IT) and Sustainable Information Systems (IS) were synonymous with Green IT-IS until recently the studies focused on sustainable IT-IS encompassing the interaction between economy, society, and environment. Here, is an attempt to understand the development in the emerging field of Sustainable IT-IS from Green IT-Green IS. The studies in the area of Sustainable IT-IS spare address diverse topics. This study attempts to provide a framework for the field of research and indicate potential research directions in the sustainable IT-IS domain. A detailed comparative analysis approach of 296 papers has been used to understand the progress of management research in Sustainable IT-IS vis-à-vis Green IT-IS. The review analyses the collated literature to understand the trends across the study period, development across various economies/ geographies, methodological approaches used, behavioral and theoretical aspects investigated, and finally, develop a taxonomy based on identified theses in the field of study. The study highlights that developed countries focus more on studies on the Sustainable IT-IS domain compared to other economies. It was evident that sustainable IS has received very limited focus. The study identifies 7 major themes and 29 subthemes forming the area of study during the evolution of Sustainable IT-IS through Green IT-IS. Subsequently, taxonomy was proposed to identify future research initiatives for investigation. The review comparing the evolution of research on managerial issues on Sustainable IT-IS vis-à-vis Green IT-IS is provided perhaps for the first time. The study provides an avenue for future research in the upcoming domain of Sustainable IT-IS.

In recent years, mobile payments gradually entered the lifestyles of consumers. For some economies, mobile payment service is exploding at an impressive rate. While for others, the adoption speed remains slow and most of the consumers are hesitating to continue using these mobile payment platforms after an initial try. We believe this is largely because of the presence of the entrenched traditional payment habits. Based on psychology theory of habit, this study focuses on the habit change from the traditional payment habit to the new mobile payment habit. It discusses how is mobile payment habit formed, and how does mobile payment habit nudge continuous use. Data are collected among 154 Hong Kong students. The data analysis results reveal that traditional payment habit, compatibility dimension of facilitating conditions, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment have significant influences on the formation of and change to mobile payment habit; mobile payment habit also has a significant impact on continuance use. However, satisfaction was not found to be influential in mobile payment habit formation. Our study highlights the importance of traditional psychology theory of habit in the area of mobile payment habit substitution. It also innovates in verifying the co-existence of traditional payment habit and mobile payment habit and understand the mechanism of which traditional payment habit influences mobile payment habit.
