As game industry prospers, the negative side of games becomes highlighted as well as its contributions to economy growth. In spite of strong arguments for the necessity to regulations as a means to decrease addiction or overindulgence, research has produced future suggestions rather than quantifiable evidence. In this paper, we propose adopting a simulation approach in addition to quantitative approaches to better understand optimal regulatory levels since a simulation approach can visualize unexpected side effects of regulations. In this study, we suggest the application of an agent-based model (ABM) as a smart service to measure the effects of regulatory policies. We review cases applying ABM in various domains and consider the possibility of using an ABM to understand the effectiveness of web board-game regulations. We find that the ABM approach would be useful in several areas, such as the analysis of regulatory effects that reflect a variety of characteristics, the measurement of micro-regulatory effects, and the simulation of regulations.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of different types of simultaneous presentation (i.e., reviewer information, textual and visual content, and similarity between textual-visual contents) on review usefulness and review enjoyment in online restaurant reviews (ORRs), as they are interrelated yet have rarely been examined together in previous research. By using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling and state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) methodologies, we found that review readability in textual content and salient objects in images in visual content have a significant impact on both review usefulness and review enjoyment. Moreover, similarity between textual-visual contents was found to be a major factor in determining review usefulness but not review enjoyment. As for reviewer information, reputation, expertise, and location of residence, these were found to be significantly related to review enjoyment. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on ORRs and provides valuable implications for general users and managers in the hospitality and tourism industries.

There is an accuracy-diversity dilemma with personalized recommendation services. Some researchers believe that accurate recommendations might reinforce customer satisfaction. However, others claim that highly accurate recommendations and customer satisfaction are not always correlated. Thus, this study attempts to establish the causal factors that determine customer satisfaction with personalized recommendation services to reconcile these incompatible views. This paper employs statistical analyses of simulation to investigate an accuracy-diversity dilemma with personalized recommendation services. To this end, we develop a personalized recommendation system and measured accuracy, diversity, and customer satisfaction using a simulation method. The results show that accurate recommendations positively affected customer satisfaction, whereas diverse recommendations negatively affected customer satisfaction. Also, customer satisfaction was associated with the recommendation product size when neighborhood size was optimal in accuracy. Thus, these results offer insights into personalizing recommendation service providers. The providers must identify customers’ preferences correctly and suggest more accurate recommendations. Furthermore, accuracy is not always improved as the number of product recommendation increases. Accordingly, providers must propose adequate number of product recommendation.

This paper draws on the interdependence theory to examine the role of power and mutual dependence on the relationship between internal/external diffusion and performance improvement within a supply chain. The results from a survey of 375 respondents show that two patterns of IOS diffusion – internal diffusion and external diffusion – have different impacts on a firm’s performance improvement according to differences in power and mutual dependence between two parties in the supply chain.

As merging online and offline channels into one single platform, individuals could easily and frequently switch between online and offline channels. In order for understanding such unique behaviors, this study attempts to explore why and how consumers choose their channels to search and purchase a product. We have drawn on multiple theories that have been used to explain individuals’ judgment and decision making (i.e., construal level theory and regula-tory focus theory) in order to develop and tested two-way ANOVA based models of how both regulatory focus (e.g., promotion vs. prevention) and product types (e.g., experience goods vs. searching goods) including the psychological distance cue separately and jointly affect individuals’ channel selection behavior (e.g., intention to use single channel vs. intention to use cross-channels). Our results have indicated that consumers with promotion-focus are more likely to use a single channel in experience goods rather than in searching goods when there exists the psychological cue. Based on our findings, the implication for both research and practice are discussed.

This study attempts to synthesize the literature on radicalization and identify the role of social media in promoting radicalization. The study is based on literature review of prominent studies on radicalization in both offline and online settings. The study builds upon the literature in offline settings on radicalisation to present a research agenda for radicalization in online settings. The study also presents a model of radicalization depicting the role of social media.

Although crowdfunding has emerged as a promising route to fundraising success, little is known about the specifics of equity-based crowdfunding. Using a data set of 1,111 start-ups with investment funding totaling over $4.67 billion, we analyzed the association between a start-up’s underlying characteristics and its funding outcome. We found that a start-up’s funding outcome is positively associated with its human capital, but negatively associated with earlier investors’ business experience. Furthermore, our analyses revealed that investors have higher levels of social capital are a noise signal to later investors. These findings shed light on the critical role of human capital, investors’ experience, and social capital as credible signals for start-up investment in equity crowdfunding.

The concept of sharing economy has received rich attention in recent years. As a typical type of business model in the sharing economy, online short rent has been paid attention by both industry and academia. In this study, we find trust to be a critical determinant to the success of online short rent platforms. Based on three dimensions of trust theory, i.e., ability, benevolence and integrity, we investigate the factors influencing tenant’ willingness to participate in online short rent. We further examine the extent to which trust can influence the number of sales and comments of rooms listed at online short-term rent platforms, which can represent tenant’ willingness to participate in the sharing economy. The results show that the trust dimensions represented by a landlord’s personal characteristics have significant positive correlations with the number of sales and comments. For example, the real name authentication and the sesame score can represent the trust integrity; online replay ratio and the average confirmation time representing the trust sincerity, and the order acceptance ratio representing the trust ability. On this basis, we proposed some recommendations for both platforms and landlords. For example, the landlords can improve the tenants’ trust by authenticating his/her real name, replying actively and timely. For platforms, when they make housing list ranking rules, they can take the landlord’s personal attributes that may affect trust into consideration. Moreover, platforms can also allow landlords to supply value-added services to improve service quality and ultimately promote the virtuous circle of the platform ecosphere. Through conducting the empirical research on a particular application of the sharing economy, we aim to fill the research gap of this field in China and provide theoretical and practical contributions to the future development of online short rent.
