Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a distributed self-organizing network which contains a large number of tiny multi-functional sensor nodes. The network life time is an important issue in WSN because every sensor node has a constraint on electric supply. In this paper, an energy consumption model is described and a GA-based algorithm will be used to optimize the energy consumption by analyzing the working model of sensor nodes. The model will provide an effective reference of working pattern for WSN. This algorithm is evaluated through analysis and simulations.

In this paper, a controller recognizing human gestures using EMG signal is shown. The tiny and band-type controller is developed for image training to excercise the specific area in the body, and uses a dry-type silver fiber electrode easy to be attached or detached itself to a skin. The captured EMG signals are converted to 10 -bit digital values via amplification and frequency filtering processes within the controller, and are transmitted to the server by wireless. As the gesture recognition ratio using the proposed controller on biceps is up to 80%, we expect the practical potential of the controller is very promising.

This paper proposes a method of a touch-based remote control and sensor information acquisition of a mobile robot using a smart phone. An application in a smart phone processes the acquired sensor information and conducts autonomous navigation. By touching the screen of the smart phone, a series of points obtained from designated curve traces are analyzed and provide control of a robot. This study develops a mobile application that acquires and handles data from a mobile robot and sends appropriate action commands through remote control using Bluetooth communication with a smart phone. The utility and performance of the proposed control scheme have been successfully verified through experimental tasks using an actual smart phone and a mobile robot.

With the growing popularity of digital video applications, those areas of the efficient transmit, storage management, and search technology for video data are emerging as an important core technology. To be an effective video indexing system, users need to be able to find the video segments that they want. Unfortunately, video data is difficult to manage because of its unstructured data type and large volume with linear forms. This paper proposes a shot verification using visual rhythm and video retrieval system. The shot verification is designed to detect a segment from video easily and quickly, known as shot boundaries, just by changing the visual rhythm without playing the image. Therefore, this can decrease the false detected shots and generate the unidentified shots and key frames. The retrieval system is constructed in terms of visual descriptor from the list of MPEG-7. The effectiveness of the proposed shot verification process and video retrieval system is demonstrated.

The recent development of 4G mobile communication system has led to the rapid technology shift from conventional repeater systems using coaxial cable links towards new fiber optic repeater systems using fiber-optic links between the base station and the outdoor fiber optic repeater. The technical changes have brought up the increasing needs of robust optic links that can be used in harsh environments. Based on the most demanding requirements, a new outdoor optical connector employing 2-channel fiber optics, uplink and downlink, has been developed for the applications where the rugged environmental protection is essential. This paper describes the development of the new connector along with the design criteria and performance results. In summarizing, the prototype optical connectors have undergone extensive laboratory and field test, and they have shown exceptional optical and mechanical characteristics under extreme environmental conditions. The connectors have also exhibited capabilities of providing fast and easy installation while maintaining high performance fiber optic connections.
