Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of muscle activity and muscle strength according to verbal command volume during isokinetic and isometric quadricep exercises. Methods: To measure muscle activity and muscle strength, surface electrodes were attached to the participants, as they sat on a Biodex chair. The isometric exercise was performed three times, with maximum exercise at 30° bending angle, based on a maximum extension state of the knee at 0°. The average holding time was unified to three seconds. In addition, the isokinetic exercise was performed three times, at 60°/sec. The verbal command ranged between 0∽60 dB and 0∽75 dB. Muscle activity was measured using surface electromyography (4D-MT, Relive, Gimhae, Korea). The Biodex System 4 was used to measure the isometric and isokinetic strength of the nodal line, and 4D-MT was used to measure muscle activity. Results: There were significant improvements in the maximal and relative muscle strengths, when the 0∽ 60 dB and 0∽75 dB verbal commands were applied with isokinetic extension/flexion (p<.05). The isokinetic exercise (0∽75 dB) group showed a significant difference in the vastus medialis oblique muscle activity change (p<.05), while the isometric exercise (0∽75 dB) group showed a significant difference in the rectus femoris muscle activity change (p<.05). Conclusions: Our results reveal that verbal commands effectively improve muscle activity and muscle strength during isokinetic and isometric quadricep exercises.

The present study examined muscle activity in response to backward perturbation in patients with clinical vertebral compression fracture (CVCF). The subjects were 32 patients aged 65 years and above con-sisting of 16 each with (CVCF group) and without (control group) CVCF. The time to peak activity, and time of onset of muscle activity of the an-terior tibial, vastus medialis, and rectus abdominis muscles when unex-pected backward perturbation was applied were evaluated by surface electromyography. The strength of perturbation was 4% or 6% of the subject’s body weight. In addition, the presence of the stepping reaction to perturbation, severity of low back pain, and vertebral alignment were evaluated. Each item was compared between the two groups. In the CVCF group, kyphosis and severity of low back pain were significantly more severe, the time to peak activity of the anterior tibial muscle after the application of perturbation at 6% of the body weight was signifi-cantly shorter, and the time of onset of activity of the rectus abdominis muscle was significantly delayed. This suggests that the time to peak activity of the anterior tibial muscle is shortened and the time of onset of activity of the rectus abdominis muscle is delayed in unexpected backward perturbation in patients with CVCF.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether pelvic stabilization affects multifidus (MF) and iliocostalis lumborum (IL) muscle activities during dynamic extension exercise. Nine males (age, 25.1±6.3 yr; height, 176.6±2.4 cm; body mass, 74.9±6.7 kg) performed an isometric lumbar extension strength test and dynamic exercise in an upright seat-ed position with or without pelvic stabilization. The electromyography and muscle strength of the MF and IL muscles were measured when the subjects performed the isometric lumbar extension strength test at the trunk angle 110˚, 146˚, and 182˚. In addition, the trunk extensor mus-cle activities were measured using 50% muscle strength of maximum isometric strength during a dynamic trunk extension exercise. The MF and IL muscle activities were significantly higher at 110°, 146°, and 182° with pelvic stabilization than that without pelvic stabilization during the isometric lumbar extension strength test (P<0.05) and the dynamic ex-ercise (P<0.05). These results suggest that the lumbar extension exer-cise with pelvic stabilization may be more effective for MF and IL mus-cle activity compared to that without pelvic stabilization.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes of gait pattern, muscle activity, and perceived comfort in response to variations of height-elevating insoles (HEIs) in young adults. The subjects of this study were 30 young adults who voluntarily consented to participate in this experiment after listening to its purpose and method. They were di-vided into 3 groups who wore HEIs height (0, 3, and 7 cm). Each group consisted of 10 young adults and wore the HEIs for 4 hr a day. Electro-myographic signals were collected from the tibialis anterior, the gas-trocnemius, the hamstring, and the right and the left erector spinae (ES) before and after walking with the HEI. Gait pattern was measured be-fore and after walking with the HEI. Perceived comfort was measured after a subject wore the insoles for 4 hr. The activities of ES showed significant differences among the three groups. The activity of the left ES was significantly different between groups 1 (0 cm) and 2 (3 cm) and groups 1 and 3 (7 cm). The activity of the right ES was significantly dif-ferent between groups 1 and 3. The left stride length and the left step length showed significant differences between groups 1 and 3. Per-ceived comfort was significantly different among the three groups. As the HEIs increased, the activities of ES were gradually increased and the left step length and stride were decreased. Using of higher HEIs over 4 hr may be occurred excessive activities of the ES, abnormal gait patterns, and perceived discomfort.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of core stability-en-hancing exercises on the lower trunk and muscle activity of stroke pa-tients. The control group (n=10) underwent standard exercise therapy, while the experiment group (n=10) underwent both the core stability-en-hancing exercise and standard exercise therapy simultaneously. The standard exercise therapy applied to the two groups included weight bearing and weight shifts and joint movements to improve flexibility and the range of motion. The core stability- enhancing exercise was per-formed 5 times a week for 30 min over a period of 4 weeks in the room where the patients were treated. For all 20 subject, the items measured before the exercise were measured after the therapeutic intervention, and changes in muscle activity of the lower trunk were evaluated. The activity and stability of the core muscles were measured using surface electromyography and the trunk impairment scale (TIS). The mean TIS score and muscle activity of the lower trunk increased in the experi-ment group significantly after performing the core stability-enhancing ex-ercise (P<0.05). The results of this study show that the core stability-en-hancing exercise is effective in improving muscle activity of the lower trunk, which is affected by hemiplegia.

Each group underwent the appropriate intervention twice a week for 6 weeks. The muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, long calf muscle, and medial calf muscle was measured. Repeated two-way ANOVA was performed to compare changes in muscle activity before and after the intervention. As a result of muscle activity measurement, LTG significantly decreased between before and after the experiment in all muscles (p<.05). In FSG, only the tibialis anterior significantly decreased between before and after the experiment (p<.05). Therefore, low-dye taping and foot intrinsic muscle strengthening exercises will be helpful for efficient the lower extremity muscle activity of flat foot.
