<Jinjak 1>ㆍ<Jinjak 2>ㆍ<Jinjak 3>ㆍ<Jinjak 4> of 『Daeakhubo』 are obtained from title of song <Jinjak>ㆍ<Jinjak> is effect on another pieces’ derivation through Goryo and Joseon dynasty period. Analysis on melodic structure and derivational principle of <Jinjak 1ㆍ2ㆍ3> is based for study of the derivational principle of another pieces related the <Jinjak>. Also, it is necessary to research on melodic structure of <Jinjak> for revealing characteristics of Korean song. The melodic structure of vocal music is closely related to structure of lyrics, especially, It thinks the Foot of lyrics is directly related to melodic structure, because the foot of lyrics is made from a piece of meter from balance of breathing. A unit of foot is related to ‘Chodu’․Edu of Gagok, this research analysis to focus the melodic structure of the foot unit. I choose the ‘Oh-youngrok’s tonal group theory in melodic structure’s method of analysis, because it is best to apprehend at a look of detailed structure and total structure of pieces. Consequentially, one foot has one tonal group basically, each line’s last foot has several tonal group for down cadence. Also, the tonal group of <Jinjak 1ㆍ2ㆍ3> is divided to ‘main tonal group’ from melodic structure’s main role and ‘sub tonal group’ from connected main tonal group. <Jinjak 1ㆍ2ㆍ3>’s main tonal group is ‘Gung-Sang2(宮-上二)’ and ‘Ha2-Gung(下二-宮)’, melodic structure of <Jinjak> is composed of ‘Gung(宮)’-centric tetrachord. <Jinjak 1> is complicated ‘sub tonal group’ inserts between ‘main tonal group’, <Jinjak 2> is not more complicated tonal group than <Jinjak 1>, <Jinjak 3> is the simplest. Also, in case of <Jinjak 3> plays variation from <Jinjak 1ㆍ2>’s ‘Ha2-Gung(下二-宮)’ tonal group to ‘Gung-Sang2(宮-上二)’ tonal group, this paper determined undisclosed <Jinjak 3>’s variation principle. Finally, I found <Jinjak 1ㆍ2ㆍ3> has different structures from tonal group’s various changes.

Kagok 歌曲 consists of a series of 26 song pieces, and there is a unique, distinctive melodic feature in each of them. It is intended in this study to make a structural comparison of the different melodies of the Kagok. As a result of comparing, it is found that although each of them has a peculiar individuality, they could ultimately be said to belong to Chosudaeyeop 初數大葉, the first song, or Isudaeyeop 二數大葉, the second one. Specifically, the fact that the song melodies of Long 弄 pieces were related to Iisudaeyeop and the melodies.

Ujo and Pyeongjo, used in Pansori, are musical modes contrasting with Gyemyeonjo; while Gyemyeonjo expresses a sad and mournful feeling, Ujo and Pyeongjo are relatively calm and restrained in their expression. Ujo and Pyeongjo are distinct musical modes that also share a similar feel, and have been easily switched between and mixed even within a single musical piece. Accordingly, Ujo and Pyeongjo are sometimes described as distinct musical modes, while at other times they are referred to simply as ‘Ujo’ or ‘Upyeongjo’ without distinction. For this reason, this paper examined the melodic movements of Pyeongjo and Ujo, focusing on musical pieces in Pansori that are representatively referred to as Ujo or Pyeongjo. As a result, Pyeongjo used the Sol-do structure along with the re-sol and do-fa structure, and Ujo used the La-re structure, but these structures of Pyeongjo and Ujo endlessly switched each other within a single piece to form a melody. In addition, a consistent flow was observed in the sections where modes switched. In the transition from Pyeongjo to Ujo, there was a tendency to mainly ascend from Sol to La or move while producing a high La note. When transitioning from Ujo to Pyeongjo, there was a frequent tendency to descend from la to sol, or descend from re to do and move to a do-centered melody, or descend an octave to re and move through a re-sol structure to a sol-do′ structure. The melodic progression trends primarily used in sections alternating between Ujo and Pyeongjo are not applied in all sections. The progression of the pansori melody appears as a much more complex flow. However, what is clear is that in Pansori, the melody progresses by constantly crossing back and forth between Pyeongjo and Ujo. Furthermore, in the melodic progression of Pansori, the crossing of modes can be grasped through the function and movement of a single note and the shifting of the melodic structure.

In order to study the melodic structures of Kyung-gi minyo and Sodo minyo and their differences, I have examined what is thought of as the essential characteristic difference between the two regions, the Kyung-gi re↔mi and Sodo La↔do, and analyzed the idiosyncratic vibrating Sodo La. The pieces I analyzed from these regions that reflect their own typical regional characteristics are "Changbu Taryong" and "Nore Garak" of Kyong-gi and "Sushimga" of Sodo. I examined the recordings of these songs from 1910 to the present. Through the use of the computer program "Nopijegi" I found that both the intervals, Kyong-gi re↔mi and Sodo La-do, registered a difference of 250 cents. Thus, there is no difference between the Kyong-gi second and the Sodo third. This means that the characteristic differences between the two regions are not in the fourth and fifth degrees of the mode (the Kyong-gi re and mi, and Sodo La and do) but in the modal frame and ornamentation. The Kyong-gi modal frame is the Sol↔do interval and the Sodo frame is the Ra↔La interval. The vibrating La is also idiosyncratic to the Sodo mode. In Sodo minyo, there are two different ways to vibrate the middle tone La : the use of vibrato from the beginning of the pitch and the use of vibrato after holding onto the pitch. The vibrato was measured at 6-8 cycles per second. The width of the vibrato increases in later recordings. I found thar there were two different kinds of vibratos : one where the width of the vibrato is consistent and the other where the width of the vibrato increases as the vibrating note slides up. With the former vibrato, vibrato seems to be directed down. With the larter, the tendency is to vibrate up.

This paper examines the characteristics of melody and tonal structure of Dokgyeong (Sutra reading) performed by blind men in the Seoul area. It is suggested that it is necessary to classify the genre(style of melody), called "Dokgyeong-je", which can reveal it because the characteristics of the music of Seoul Dokgyeong is not suitable to explain it as the existing Tori through analysis of music. Three types of performance are found in the ritual of Dokgyeong conducted in Seoul. The first is simply 'reading'[讀] whereas the second is 'chanting[誦]' Sutra. The rest is 'singing[唱]' Sutra. As the melodic features appear in singing and chanting, I analyzed the interval of the weighted scale, position of the ending tone, melody progression, and the expression of the specific tone in these two types of songs. Two kinds of melodies(Gyeong-tori and Menari-tori) are used in the recitation of the Buddhist style chanting in various blessing rituals. Usually, the song starts with a middle or high note on the scale, and the cadence goes down to the lowest note. It is noteworthy that even when one person chants the same passage, he or she selectively uses Gyeong-tori or Menari-tori. In the passage of the repetition(of leader/chorus call and response), the center tone is shifted upward by 4 degrees as the song progresses, and the overall pitch is also progressing in the higher range toward the latter half. The ending of the phrase is finished at the lowest tone of the scale, but it is shifted upwards by 4 degrees and finished with a high note in the latter part. Often the ending tone is pushed up over a note. The melodic characteristics of the repetitive passage may be regarded as Gyeong-tori Susimga-tori, but they often show features that deviate from their stereotypes based on the center tone, weighted scale, and melody that determine the specific Tori. In addition, the use of the modulation melody that appears in the middle of the song is also interpreted as a characteristic melody that appears only in the music of Seoul Dokgyeong. The difficulty in distinguishing between two kinds of Tori is due to the fact that the music is basically made for the purpose of reading the texts. The lyrics of Dokgyeong are sung in neumatic style in the slow reading part, but it becomes a syllabic style and it is hard to reveal certain expressions that appear on certain notes. The distinction between Gyeong-tori and Susimga-tori is not clear, and most of the characteristics of the two are revealed. Furthermore, the unique melody process that comes from the characteristic of reading the text can be found. Since Dokgyeong in the Seoul area has not attracted much attention in the music studies, its characteristics have not been known yet, but analysis shows that there is a unique melodic operation resulting from Sutra Reading. If it is difficult to define the tone and melodic characteristics as something familiar, I think it is desirable to interpret it as a unique musical style that only Seoul Dokgyeong music is using.

This study comparatively analyzes the relationship between linguistic structure and vocal melodic organization in representative phrases from “Ah, fors’è lui” in the Italian opera La Traviata and “North Wind Blows” in the Chinese national opera The White-Haired Girl. Based on the libretti, musical scores, and relevant previous studies, it examines how Italian word stress, semantically significant words, and vowel prolongation, as well as Mandarin tonal contours, syllabic structure, semantic pauses, and filler words, shape melodic movement, note duration, metrical emphasis, and phrase cadences. The findings show that in “Ah, fors’è lui,” stressed and emotionally significant words are assigned longer note values and placed at melodic focal points. Vowel prolongation, legato phrasing, and changes in tonality and vocal register create continuous melodic lines that portray Violetta’s hesitation and inner conflict. Words and phrases such as “l’anima,” “amor,” “palpito,” and “croce e delizia al cor” serve as musical centers and deepen her psychological expression. In contrast, in “North Wind Blows,” Mandarin tones, natural pronunciation, semantic pauses, and filler words such as “那个” participate more directly in melodic and phrase construction. Repetition of short phrases, stepwise motion, descending cadences, and folk-song-style melodies maintain textual clarity while expressing Xi’er’s simplicity, innocence, and underlying anxiety. These findings suggest that the differences between the two works lie not in a simple opposition between melody-centered and language-centered composition, but in the distinct organizational principles created by stress-based and tone-based languages. The study highlights the need to consider word stress, tonal contours, vowel prolongation, diction, and phrase focal points in cross-linguistic vocal education and performance interpretation.

“Hwachosageori” is a major repertoire in the Namdo Japga(Southern Japga), known to have been adapted by Shin Bang-cho. This study analyzes its composition method, focusing on melodic types and structural organization. First, the opening melodies of each section show notable variety. These include mid-range pyeongjo melodies, doljang melodies, gyemyeonjo melody no. 1, pyeongjo eotcheong melodies, and ujo melody no. 2. Second, the closing melodies demonstrate consistency. Sections one to six end with mid-range pyeongjo melodies, while sections seven and eight use gyemyeonjo melody no. 1, both resolving around a central pitch. Third, compositional intentionality is evident in the diverse internal construction. The song uses a densely organized array of upyeongjo melodic types and smoothly transitions between upyeongjo and gyemyeonjo melodies.

This study investigates musical characteristics by examining rhythmic structure and melodic structure of songs for planting rice seedlings being distributed in Kyungbuk inland provinces. The objects of this study are 8 songs for planting rice seedlings of 6 districts being distributed along by Nakdong river with a plentiful supply of water in Kyungbuk inland provinces. These provinces can be divided into three ones as follows; Andong Jeojeon Nongyo, Yecheon Tongmyeong Nongyo, and Yecheon Gongcheo Nongyo of the upriver districts, Sangju Chosan Minyo and Gumi Balgaengi Deulsori of the middle river districts, and Dalseong Habin Deulsori, Daegu Gongsan Nongyo, and Jain Gyejeong Deulsori of the lower river districts. As a result of examining them, it was clear musical distinction among three districts. For the tempo and beat in relation to rhythmic structure, 3 small beat and 4 beat of ??=66~114, or combined small beat of 3 small beat+2 small beat 2 beat was occasionally found in songs for planting rice seedlings of the upriver districts. Songs for planting rice seedlings of the upriver districts being composed by mainly free rhythm have various beats, but basically correspond to the Jajinmodi Gangdan in the system of tempo and beat. Very slow 3 small beat 2 beat or 3 beat of ??=38~54 and regular Gutgeori Gangdan of 3 small beat 4 beat was found in the middle river districts. Very irregular beat as follows; 2 small beat 6 beat, 8 beat, 9 beat, 12 beat, 13 beat, and so on was found in the lower river districts. On the other hand regular beat of Jungmori Gangdan with 2 small beat 12 beat sometimes was found. For the melodic structure of each districts, Andong Jeojeon Nongyo songs for planting rice seedlings of the upriver districts are a two-note scale with going up by ‘do’ from starting by ‘ra’. And a down melody is a pentatonic scale stopping as ‘ra’ like ‘sol-mi-re’ and ‘mi-re-do-ra’. Songs for planting rice seedlings of the upriver districts and middle river districts mainly appear three-note scale or four-note scale with going up by ‘mi-ra-do’ or ‘mi-sol-ra-do’, and a pentatonic scale stopping as ‘mi’ going down by ‘re-do-ra-sol-mi’. Songs for planting rice seedlings of the lower river districts go up by ‘ra-do’ or ‘ra-do-re’, and go down as ‘mi’ going down by ‘re-do-ra-sol-mi’ like the middle river districts. As things turned out, we know that songs for planting rice seedlings among these three districts have clearly different characteristics musically. Scale of these all districts is charactered by Jeongja sori of Menaritori according to characteristics of the folk song of east districts. But for the melodic structure, songs for planting rice seedlings of the upriver districts clearly appear original form and nature, on the other hand we can know a similar melodic structure and adding to artificial elements both middle river districts and lower river districts. Also for the rhythmic structure, we can know that songs for planting rice seedlings of the upriver districts have free the system of rhythm without fixing but ones of the middle river districts and lower river districts have fixed system of rhythm gradually. This can be analyzed as songs for planting rice seedlings distributing in the districts among the mountains of the upriver districts have stronger local customs than ones of the middle river districts and lower river districts.

This study aims to identify the practical musical aspects of contemporary Beompae by analyzing the melodic characteristics and patterns of Cheonsu- bara performed by Daewon and Seongrim, successors of the Busan Yeongsanjae tradition, and comparing them with the music of previous generations. The research results are summarized as follows. First, the Cheonsu-bara Beompae of the Busan Yeongsanjae is not a Busan-specific tradition. It originated from the monk Yeongpa and was transmitted through successive generations of Cheonggong, Boryeon, and Hyehwa. Its regional characteristics were further solidified through the addition of local stylistic elements associated with Busan. Second, the Cheonsu-bara uses a traditional Korean rhythmic system of three?four and four―four rhythmic patterns. As it was standardized to accompany Buddhist rituals, it emphasizes musical completeness and ritual symbolism rather than the semantic content of the lyrics. Third, the accompanying instruments include the gwangsoe, taejing, daegoo, moktak, and taepyeongso. The taepyeongso is the only melodic instrument, but it plays a unique melody inherited from folk musical traditions. In the case of the Busan Yeongsanjae, even in free-spirited performances, the Cheonsu-bara melody was often used. Fourth, the tempo of the Beompae was initially slow at ♩.=60, but gradually increased, reaching ♩.=78 in the latter half. This change occurred equally across all masters, including the first holder, Venerable Guam; the honorary transmission educator, Venerable Boam; and the transmission educators, Daewon and Seongrim. However, while the gradual change in singing speed can be viewed as a variable element from a musical perspective, a thorough reconsideration of the acceleration tendency and tempo deviations is necessary for organic integration with Jakbeopmu and harmonious transmission. Fifth, the percussion accompaniment rhythm is clear and systematic, with beats ranging from three to four and five to six. Furthermore, while the final lyric, “Sabaha,” was omitted in the past, it is now clearly pronounced. This is interpreted as the result of adapting flexibly in the field of transmission to enhance the communicative power of the lyrics and sound. Sixth, The Cheonsu-bara performed by Daewon and Seongnim is fundamentally based on the Menari-tori style, sharing the same vocal range, starting and concluding notes, and climax. However, Daewon exhibits a unique melodic structure characterized by prominent disjunct motions under the influence of Boam, whereas Seongnim pursues a natural melodic flow centered on conjunct motions. Simultaneously, within the context of live transmission, they influence each other's vocalizations, creating a natural heterophony that establishes complex melodic layers and enhances the overall musical richness.

The melodic structure of Korean traditional music is very important in its music because it has not harmony. I had insisted the melodic structure of korean traditional music have four stratigraphies. But I cannot have full assurance that there are no more than four stratigraphies, and how to find out the melodic structure of each stratigraphy. So I will analysis the simple melody of Jeongseon-Arari, Gangwon province folk song. And From the analytic study I will find the analytic method of the melodic structure in korean traditional music. The rhythmic cycle structure(長短構造) of Jeongseon-Arari is 72 small beats, 24 beats, 8 small meters, 4meters, 1 rhythmic cycle(Jangdan 長短).

This paper is a study that transcribes and analyzes the entire (106 minutes) version of the shamanic song (Muga) “Hwangje Puri”(Emperor's Reproach/Exorcism) as chanted by Mansin(Shaman) Kang Min-jung at the 2021 Geumseongdangjeritual. The research aims to elucidate its musical structure and its characteristics as a Muga of the Seoul Gut(Seoul Shamanic Ritual) lineage. Based on the chanting of Mansin Kang Min-jung, the analysis of the jangdan(rhythmic cycle) structure and melodic features of “Hwangje Puri” is categorized into four aspects: paragraph division of the narrative text (saseol), jangdancomposition, melodic progression, and rhythmic system. “Hwangje Puri” is a long-form narrative Muga, consisting of a total of 32 paragraphs and 2,138 jangdancycles. A refrain, “Daehwallero-man seolseolhi noreusosa”(Please perform gently only in the Great Hwalle style), is repeated as the cadence for each paragraph. This phrase concludes with La?Sol, a representative final cadence pattern of the Gyeongtori(Gyeonggi Province style) mode, and combines with the concluding rhythm of the Gutgeori Jangdan(a 3-subdivision, 4-beat rhythm) to simultaneously lead both the musical demarcation and the narrative transition. The rhythm exhibits a flexible system, centered on the 3-subdivision, 2-beatin the narrative sections (seosabu), with the insertion of 2-subdivision, 3-beat (hemiola) according to the internal rhythmic structure (baeja gujo) of the text. Conversely, the concluding sections (jongjibu) maintain the fixed form of the Gutgeori Jangdan (3-subdivision, 4-beat), clearly defining the end of the narrative and the ritualistic order. The melody is composed of the Gyeongtori pentatonic scale (Sol?La?do?re?mi), forming a consistent melodic flow throughout the long narrative through sequential progression, which alternates between ascending and descending movements, and leaps of a perfect fourth and a perfect fifth. In this way, “Hwangje Puri” organically connects the long narrative by repeatedly utilizing a refrain-like cadential melody within a strophic form (through-composed form), thereby securing both the structural integrity of the ritual music and its traditional continuity. This study is the first instance of academically documenting the full-length audio recording of “Hwangje Puri,” providing fundamental data for structural analysis and transmission studies of Seoul shamanic music.
