This study aimed to evaluate the effects of applying sensory integration therapy on the peer interaction of siblings with children with disabilities. These subjects were preschool children aged between 3 and 7 years who had used the child development center. A total of 20 children were recruited, 10 for the experimental and control groups. Then, 10 healthy siblings of children with disability supported the experimental group and compared with the control group. The sibling sensory integration therapy was performed in the experimental group, whereas individual sensory integration therapy was conducted in the control group. The treatment was administered once a week for a total of 10 weeks, 40 min per session, and 10-min interview with the children's parents. Based on the theory of sensory integration therapy, play that meets the neurological needs of each child was selected and provided. The total score is 0-96 points, indicating that the higher the score, the more negative peer interactions, and that the lower the score, the more positive the peer interactions. Among them, 22–29 and 31 questions were scored in reverse because they meant that the lower the score, the more negative the interactions. This tool is divided into three subcategories: play disruption (13 questions), disconnection (11 questions), and interaction (8 questions). A significant difference was confirmed in the area of play disruption in the experimental group and total scores; however, no significant difference was observed in the other areas. When sensory integration therapy intervention was applied to children with disability and their siblings, it was more effective within the play disruption area of peer interaction than in children with disability without a sibling.
Survey on the Current Status of Orthopedic Manual Therapy

With the emergence of an aging society, the number of orthopedic manual therapy prescriptions is increasing. However, no clear prescription guidelines exist for orthopedic manual therapy in the Republic of Korea. This study aimed to examine the current status of orthopedic manual therapy in the Republic of Korea by examining the satisfaction, time, and cost adequacy of orthopedic manual therapy for patients. This survey was conducted among adults who visited a clinic or hospital in the Republic of Korea. The survey had 26 questions and was distributed through a Google questionnaire URL. This study performed descriptive statistics and Chi-squared test of the general characteristics of the respondents, orthopedic manual therapy experience, treated hospital type, perception, expectation, satisfaction, and the right price and duration for orthopedic manual therapy. Of the total 278 respondents, 113 (40.6%) had undergone orthopedic manual therapy previously, and 165 had not experienced the therapy (59.4%). Orthopedic manual therapy was mainly performed twice a week for 30-60 min, and the price was between 100,000 and 140,000 won per session. The desired price and time were 50,000-90,000 won and 30-60 min, respectively. The longer the duration of receiving orthopedic manual therapy and the greater the time/frequency satisfaction, and the effect of the therapy. Activities of daily living (ADL) are particularly likely to improve when receiving orthopedic manual therapy at a rehabilitation hospital than others. Satisfaction with orthopedic manual therapy increases as time/frequency satisfaction increases and ADL improves. Thus, it is important to suggest an appropriate manual therapy time according to patients’ circumstances and develop a manual therapy plan to improve ADL.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of selective intensive Whole-body electromyostimulation(WB-EMS) training on the lumbar stability, and gait function of subjects with lumbar instability. There were recruited 34 subjects with lumbar instability for this study. They were selected to have tested positive through the prone instability test and passive lumbar extension test. They were randomly divided into experimental group (n=17) with WB-EMS and control group (n=17) without WB-EMS, respectively. Both groups received a total of 45 minutes of intervention programs, respectively. Measurements were used before and after the intervention. The lumbar instability was measured by the single limb stance test and plank test. The gait function was used the gait analysis. The following statistical analysis was performed: an independent t-test for the general characteristics of the subjects, 2×2 analysis of variance with repeated measures for the lumbar instability and gait function. The group×time interaction effect showed significant improvement in the right single limb stance (F=5.445, p=.026), left single limb stance (F=4.245, p=.048) and plank test (F=4.341, p=.045) in lumbar stability test, And also, velocity (F=4.360, p=.045), cadence( F=4.681, p=.038), step time (F=5.261, p=.029) and step length (F=20.149, p=.000) of gait analysis. This study suggest that WB-EMS may be effective exercise for the lumbar stability and gait function in subjects with lumbar instability.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12-weeks Hatha yoga program on estrogen, depression-related hormones and depression scale in middle-aged postmenopausal women. The subjects were randomly assigned to a Hatha yoga group(n=20) and a control group(n=17). Hatha Yoga program was conducted 3 times a week, the 1st 40-50%HRR(RPE 12-13), the 2nd 50-60%HRR(RPE 13-14), and the 3rd 60-70%HRR(RPE 14-15) for 12 weeks. The test data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, paired t-test, independent t-test and the alpha level of .05 was set for all tests of significance. The results of the study in the estrogen was significantly increased in Hatha yoga group and control group. Serotonin decreaed significantly in control group, although the changes failed to reach a statistically significant level in Hatha yoga group. Dopamine decreased in both Hatha yoga group and control group. Cortisol tended to be decreased in Hatha yoga group and to be increased in control group, although the changes failed to reach a statistically significant level. Depression scale decreased significantly in Hatha yoga group. In conclusion, Hatha yoga pogram had positive effect on estrogen, depression-related hormones and depression scale in middle-aged postmenopausal women.

The purpose of this study was to research the effect of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO)-shaped elastic band on gait over obstacles in stroke patients. This study was conducted on 10 patients with stroke to be recruited voluntarily. They were performed to walk from 1m before to 1m after GAITRite System. They were compared with and without the AFO-shaped elastic band in temporal and spatial aspects of 5cm obstacle. Participants wearing the AFO-shaped elastic band was significantly increased cadence and decreased step length differential between affected and less-affected sides compared to them without it. The heel to heel (H-H) base support was significantly increased in the less-affected side with the AFO-shaped elastic band compared to them without it. We suggest that the AFO-shaped elastic band was contributed to gait over obstacles in safe and improve the asymmetry between the affected and less-affected sides. However, it needs to be further studies of kinematic data and muscle activation in gait over obstacles using the AFO-shaped elastic band.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of non-contact back pain management program on pain, functional disability, and psychosocial factor in chronic low back pain. In this study, a total of 28 patients with chronic low back pain were randomly assigned to a non-contact back pain management program group and a pamphlet group. A numerical Rating Scale (NRS) was used to evaluate the low back pain levels of the subjects. The Korean version of the Oswestry Disability Index (KODI) was used to evaluate the subjects’ degree of lumbar functional disability. The Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire (FABQ) was used to evaluate the psychosocial factors of the subjects. The intervention was performed twice a week for six weeks. Each session lasted 40 minutes. In the non-contact low back pain management program, an expert directly coached the exercise program in real time through a video system and provided training on correct posture and attention. The control group was provided with only a pamphlet. The result of this study confirmed that despite the statistically significant differences in KODI in both the experimental and control groups, the amount of change between before and after the experiment significantly decreased statistically in the experimental group compared to that in the control group. Significant differences in NRS and FABQ appeared in the experimental group but not in the control group. A conclusion could be drawn that in an era when the importance of non-face-to-face communication has increased because of COVID-19, a program that enables experts to intervene firsthand in low back pain management in real time through a non-contact program is an effective intervention method that can be used to reduce back pain, dysfunction index, and psychosocial factors in patients with chronic low back pain.

This study aimed to identify the effects of music-based complex exercise program on the lymphedema, hand grip strength, pain, and gait endurance in patients with breast cancer. Thirteen patients with mastectomy volunteered to participate in this study. All subjects underwent the music-based complex exercise program for averaging 60 minutes daily for 8 weeks (total of 40 sessions). Assessment tools were made with lymphedema, hand grip strength, visual analogue scale and 6 minutes walk test before and after the 8-week intervention period. All parameters showed significant improvement after intervention (p<0.05). This study demonstrates that the music-based complex exercise program may be favorably used to manage post-mastgectomy symptems such as lymphedema, pain, muscle weakness, reduced walking endurance. This study provides valuable information for future studies in this field. Further studies with wider range of subjects and longer experimental period are required to support the results of this study.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of yoga exercise on psychosocial well-being index-short form; PWI-SF, cortisol and high sensitive-C reactive protein; hs-CRP in menopause women. Twenty-three subjects within menopause periods volunteered to participate in this study and they were randomly designated to yoga exercise group(n=12) and control group(n=11). All data was caculated by SPSS 23.0 and we used paird-t test, independent-t test, two way repeated measures ANOVA to make a results. As a results of this study, PWI-SF showed interaction between yoga group and control group. Also, yoga group had a significant decrease and control group showed significant increase. As well as hs-CRP indicated interaction between yoga group and control group and significant increased in control group. From this point of view, our study suggested that performing regular yoga exercise can relive the daily stress in menopause women and also can give a positive effects on the hs-CRP which related in metabolic disease. However, this study had a little limitation because we couldn`t control their any other physical activities and daily diets. Although we have had limitation, we expected that this yoga exercise could be used in clinical rehabilitation to improve psychological symptoms and positve metabolism in menopause women.

This study examines the importance and practice of communication skills by physical therapy students and analyzes data on students’ communication education needs. Between March and May 2022, 131 students from the physical therapy department participated in a survey. Communication skills were classified into interpretation ability, role performance ability, self-presentation ability, goal setting ability, and message conversion ability. The Borich method was used to analyze communication education needs, and to identify priorities in communication education. In terms of the importance and practice of communication skills, message conversion ability ranked the highest at 3.95 points and 3.83 points, respectively, and self-presentation ability and goal setting ability showed the lowest score. The need for self-presentation ability was identified as the highest priority among communication education needs. Therefore, to improve the communication skills of physical therapy students set to become physical therapists in the medical field, it is necessary to teach them self-presentation skills. The results of this study can be used as basic educational material that improves communication skills in physical therapy students.

The purpose of this study was to establish the effects of different thoracic kyphosis angles in sitting position on diaphragm movement and vital capacity. Ten healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Subjects performed four thoracic kyphosis angles-straight sitting positions against the wall(Condition A), sitting position with thoracic kyphosis angle of 30°(Condition B), sitting position with thoracic kyphosis angle of 40°(Condition C), sitting position with thoracic kyphosis angle of 50°(Condition D). Diaphragm movement was measured by M-mode ultrasound and vital capacity was measured by digital spirometer. A one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to determine the statistical significance of the diaphragm movement and vital capacity. Diaphragm movement was significant difference between all positions and it was decreased as thoracic kyphosis angle increased. There was no significant difference in vital capacity. The results of this study suggest that increased thoracic kyphosis angle in sitting position can be having an adverse effect on patients with reduced vital capacity due to decreased diaphragm movement.

Background: Breast Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. Considering the lifestyle of women with breast cancer, Pilates may be beneficial as a complementary intervention to standard therapeutic exercise. However, few recommendations are available with guidelines for Pilates programs for breast cancer survivors. Objective: This study aims to systematically review previous studies to assess the effects of Pilates on upper extremity function, lymphedema, depression, and quality of life compared to those with other forms of exercise and standard treatment for women with breast cancer. Method: We searched the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Medline via Pubmed for relevant publications through March 2022. The keywords “breast cancer” and “Pilates” were used as keywords, and randomized controlled trials and single-subject studies were included. Results: Thirteen studies were reviewed. Our results show that improvements in the Pilates groups were better than those in groups engaging in home-based exercise or no exercise at all. The Pilates groups showed improvements in upper extremity function including muscle strength, flexibility, and range of motion, as well as improvements in the quality of life score, and reductions in the severity of lymphedema that were greater than other groups. Conclusion: Pilates can complement traditional treatment programs as a safe model. This systematic review provides valuable information for further studies.

This study is to verify the effects of various physical therapies to improve postural control which is necessary for safe and independent daily life in people with cerebral palsy. For this, meta-analysis was completed on related studies published in Korea. A systematic search was performed using 5 electric database to collect articles. Group experiment designs were included. Studies were classified into 4 categories: neurodevelopmental treatment, task oriented approach, therapeutic exercise, and neuromuscular stimulation. Outcomes included dynamic balance, static balance, and motor function. A total of 30 trials was included among initial 380 studies. Neurodevelopmental treatment, task oriented approach, therapeutic exercise, and neuromuscular stimulation significantly improved postural control, but there were no difference between therapies(p>.05). These treatments not only had a positive effect on the improvement of dynamic and static balance, but also had a positive effect on muscle function. The effect size of various physical therapies for postural control in people with cerebral palsy was medium and significant. Based on this meta-analysis, sufficient intervention time can be helpful for more effective postural control intervention.
