본 연구의 목적은 ‘사회복지법인 동명회 창설자 김오현의 생애와 복지활동’을 연구하는 것이다. 필자는 관련 문헌을 연구하고, 특강(2010년)과 인터뷰(2015년) 자료를 분석하였다. 그는 1928년 9월 30일 전남 무안에서 태어나 60여 년간 복지활동을 하고 2020년 7월 6일(92세)에 별세했다. 그는 어린 시절에 할머니와 부모의 영향을 받아 기독교 신자로 “네 이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하라”를 배 웠다. 전주신흥중학교에 다닐 때 학도병으로 참여하여 인민군 포로가 되었고, 위생병으로 “원수를 사랑하 라”를 실천하였다. 군 복무 후 민중의 삶이 극도로 피폐해져 가는 것을 보고 덴마크형 이상농촌 건설을 소망했다. 한국성서학교 기독교사회사업과에서 강태국 박사로부터 이상농촌(농촌개발운동)을 배웠다. 그는 이상농촌을 만들고자 광주 양림동에 양계장을 짓고, 양돈, 축산을 하였다. 1962년에 스완스회(후에 캠패션회로 개명)와 협의하여, 1963년에 사택에 신애원을 설립하고 양계장을 숙사로 개조하여 1964년에 아동복리시설로 인가받았다. 컴패션회의 지원을 받아서 조영희 여사와 함께 아동들을 가르치고 신애원을 발전시켰다. 시간이 지날수록 아동들은 고등학교와 대학교를 진학하였고, 농업과 나전칠기 기술은 산업 사회에 적합하지 않아서 이상농촌의 꿈을 접었다. 그는 이상농촌을 위해 확보한 땅으로 신애원을 이전하고(1985년), 1990년부터 벧엘타운을 시작으로 벧 엘요양원, 동명전문요양원을 건립하였다. 일제강점기에 태어나 한국전쟁 등을 겪은 노인이 “살아온 삶보 다 더 즐겁고 행복하게 살 수 있는 곳”으로 조성하였다. 그는 한국사회복지시설연합회 회장, 한국사회복지협의회 부회장 등을 하면서 정치지도자들과 네트워크를 통해 사회복지계의 발전을 위해 헌신하였다. 이러한 공로로 국민훈장 동백장(1988년), 아산사회복지상 (2003년) 등을 수상하였다. ‘사람의 가치’가 인정받는 세상을 만들려는 사회복지법인 동명회의 꿈은 자 녀들에 의해 구현되고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to study the life and welfare activities of Kim Oh-hyun, the founder of the Dongmyeong Association, a social welfare corporation. I studied related literature, and analyzed special lectures (2010) and interview (2015) data. He was born on September 30, 1928, in Muan, Jeollanam-do, and died on July 6, 2020 (92 years old) after 60 years of welfare activities. When he was young, he was influenced by his grandmother and parents and learned to “love your neighbors as you do with your body” as a Christian. When he attended Jeonju Shinheung Middle School, he participated as a student soldier and became a prisoner of the People’s Army, and practiced “Love the enemy” as a sanitiser. After serving in the military, he saw the lives of the people becoming extremely impoverished, and he hoped to build an ideal Danish rural area. I learned the ideal rural area (rural development movement) from Dr. Kang Tae-guk in the Christian Social Work Division of the Korean Bible School. He built a poultry farm in Yangrim-dong, Gwangju, and raised pigs and livestock to create an ideal rural area. In 1962, in consultation with the Swans Association (later renamed the Compassion Association), Shin Ae-won was established in its own house in 1963 and the poultry farm was converted into a lodging house and approved as a children’s welfare facility in 1964. With the support of the Compassion Association, he taught children and developed Shin Ae-won with First Lady Cho Young-hee. As time passed, the children went on to high school and university, and their agricultural and lacquerware skills were not suitable for industrial society, so they gave up their dream of an ideal rural area. He moved Shin Ae-won to the land secured for the ideal rural area (1985) and built Bethel Nursing Home and Dongmyeong Specialized Nursing Home, starting with Bethel Town in 1990. It was created as a place where the elderly, who were born in Japanese colonial era and went through the Korean War, can live more joyfully and happily than their lives. He devoted himself to the development of the social welfare world through networks with political leaders while serving as the president of the Korea Social Welfare Facilities Association and the vice president of the Korean Social Welfare Council. For this achievement, he was awarded the National Medal of Merit Dongbaek Medal (1988) and the Asan Social Welfare Award (2003). The dream of the Dongmyeong Association, a social welfare corporation, to create a world where ‘people’s values’ are recognized is being realized by children.

이 연구의 목적은 아시아복지재단의 정신을 정초한 최귀희의 생애와 복지활동의 사회복지적 의미를 밝히 는데 있다. 이러한 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 최귀희의 생애와 복지활동을 분야별로 살펴보고, 그의 복지사상과 복지실천의 특징을 고찰하였다. 최귀희는 기도를 통한 아동들에 대한 전인격적인 보호와 교육 을 위한 아동복지사업, 토탈 리해빌리테이션을 향한 열정으로 장애인복지사업, 용서하는 삶 속에서 행한 교정복지사업, 억압받는 여성들의 평등한 삶을 추구하려는 여성복지사업 등 그 시기 지극히 소외받고 어려 운 이웃들을 향해 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 실천하였다. 최귀희의 복지활동의 중심에는 힘없는 자의 권리를 지켜 주려는 정의, 그리스도의 가르침과 어려움에 처한 이웃에 대한 깊은 사랑, 고아들이 이 세상 어디에 도 구속되지 않고 자유롭게 살아가길 바라는 이들의 자유, 분쟁과 다툼이 없는 평화의 이념이 자리잡고 있다. 결론적으로 핍박과 환난의 시기에 공통받고 있던 사람들을 열정적으로 사랑했고 그들을 위해 함께 고생하던 모든 이들을 위해 끊임없이 기도하던 최귀희의 생애와 복지활동은 우리에게 사회복지의 본질과 어려운 자들과 함꼐하는 전문가들의 사명이 무엇인지를 말해 주고 있다고 하겠다.

This study aims to shed light on the life and welfare initiatives of Choi, Gwi Hui, which serve as the foundation of the Asia Welfare Foundation, and to examine their social welfare importance. To address the research objective, the study conducts a thorough examination of Choi, Gwi Hui’s life and welfare activities across different domains, while also analyzing the key features of his welfare philosophy and practices. Choi, Gwi Hui engaged in various welfare endeavors, including child welfare initiatives aimed at providing holistic protection and education for children through prayer, a passion for disability welfare through total rehabilitation, correctional welfare activities promoting forgiveness, and women’s welfare projects advocating for equality for oppressed women. In all these efforts, she exemplified the love of Jesus Christ towards those who were most marginalized and in dire circumstances at that time. In conclusion, The core of Choi, Gwi Hui’s welfare activities lies a commitment to uphold the rights of the powerless, inspired by justice, a profound love for neighbors in distress as taught by Christ, a desire for children to live freely without bondage in this world, and an ideal of peace devoid of conflict and strife. Ultimately, the life and welfare activities of Choi, Gwi Hui, who had a strong devotion to comforting those facing persecution and difficulties, and consistently prayed for all those enduring hardships with hwe, illuminate the significance of social welfare and the role of professionals committed to supporting the marginalized.

본 논문은 강신경(1929-2019)의 목사와 교육자 그리고 사회사업가로서의 삶을 영역별로 살펴본 것이다. 한국전쟁으로 초토화된 상황에서 목사로서 참혹한 현실에 대한 사명감과 책임감으로 고아들을 돌보는 가운데 필요에 의해서 교육사업과 선교사업을 전개하였다. 교회를 다수 개척하는 가운데 초등학교로부터 대학에 이르기 까지 다양한 교육기관을 설립하였고 시대의 흐름에 따라 아동복지시설로부터 노인복지 시설에 이르기 까지 시대가 요구하는 사회복지사업을 전개하였다. 강신경은 디프테리아로 아들과 고아에 게 주사를 놓아야 할 때 선택의 기로에 섰다고 한다. 그 때 아들보다는 고아에게 주사할 것을 결단하였 고 이 결단으로 말미암아 셋째 아들을 잃었다고 한다. 목회자로서 어려운 결단을 내린 강신경은 이러한 마음으로 선교사업과 복지사업 그리고 교육사업을 전개한 것이다. 오늘날 각 교회와 교육기관들 그리고 사회복지기관들은 다양한 후계자들이 이어서 운영하고 있다. 한 사람의 희생과 헌신으로 많은 이들이 교 육서비스와 복지서비스 그리고 종교적 혜택을 누리고 있는 것이다. 이러한 강신경의 삶은 후세에 크게 귀감이 될 것으로 판단된다.

This paper examines the life of Kang Shin-Kyung (1929-2019) as a pastor, educator, and social worker, analyzing it by different aspects. In the aftermath of the Korean War, which left the nation in ruins, Kang Shin-Kyung, driven by his sense of mission and responsibility as a pastor, began caring for orphans. From this necessity, he developed educational and missionary projects. While establishing numerous churches, he also founded a wide range of educational institutions, from elementary schools to universities. Over time, he expanded his efforts into social welfare projects, responding to the demands of the era, including child welfare facilities and elder care institutions. It is said that Kang Shin-Kyung faced a moment of great decision when he had to choose between administering a diphtheria injection to his son or an orphan. He chose the orphan, a decision that tragically led to the loss of his third son. This difficult decision exemplified Kang Shin-Kyung’s commitment as a pastor, which he carried into his missionary, welfare, and educational endeavors. Today, the churches, educational institutions, and social welfare facilities he founded are managed by numerous successors, continuing his legacy. Thanks to his sacrifice and dedication, many people are benefiting from educational services, welfare support, and religious blessings. Kang Shin-Kyung’s life of selflessness and dedication stands as a profound example for future generations.
