The rock-carved Buddhist bell located in Seoksu-dong, Anyang is thought to bemodeled Goryeo Buddhist bell from the late 11th century, judging by its invertedU-shaped dragon hook and four striking points with 12-lobed lotus plates. The bellmost similar to the Anyang Seoksu-dong rock-carved bell is the Yongjusa templebell. It appears the sculptor who carved the rock-carved bell used the Anyangsatemple bell, or bells from nearby temples, which display the style of the late 11thcentury, as a model. The monk statue on the rock-carved bell was thought to berelated to bell striking. However, judging from the frontal view and the woodenhammer’s position not facing the striking point, it is believed that the monk wasrelated to the rock-carved bell or temple bell project at Anyangsa temple in themid-to-late 11th century.

Jinyeol was a sculptor monk active between the late 17th Century and the early 18th Century and it has been found that he created 13 pieces of sculpture, including 10 pieces of Buddhist statues in nine projects. The current study carefully analyzed the styles of each piece created by Jinyeol and the development of his styles to list in the chronological order the Buddhist statues without any records on the years of creation based on their characteristics. Moreover, Jinyeol's training period was analyzed to identify the statues that represented his styles and discuss the styles shared and succeeded by his apprentices. Jinyeol was taught to sculpt by Dojam, Jihyeon, Seongsim, Gyecho, and Beobjam through the training period and the direct origin of Jinyeol's styles of Buddhist statues can be found in Beobjam's <Wooden Seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva> in Heungcheon-sa Temple, Seoul. Style of the two monk-sculptors is very similar each other in shape of face, ear, eye, mouth, and nose. Especially, shown on garment wrinkles with S-shaped expressed on the lower half of the body and hair in spider's thread shape, Jinyeol transmitted style of Beobjam, his master and created his own unique style. Jinyeol took leadership in creating Buddhist statues between the mid 1700s and early 1720s and the styles were classified into three periods. Jinyeol's creations showed variations in the shapes and expressions of faces, body proportions, and wrinkles on upper and lower bodies. Period Ⅰ was from the mid 1700s to early 1710s. Then, it has solemn, angled face in square shape. A line of train draping over the right chest and the innermost train on the back are broader, while the wrinkles on the bottom are S-shaped along the left seam. Period Ⅱ was from early 1710s to early 1720s. Face became voluminous, bright, and mild. The upper half of the body was longer than before so that body ratio was better. Especially in the lower half, the wide fan-shaped wrinkles and 'S'-shaped wrinkles on two divided left hem appear. Period Ⅲ was early 1720s. The face that gives young impression tends to be wider. Also unlike the wrinkles on the lower half of the previous period, when the ornamentality was emphasized, it was simplified to a form spreading to right and left direction from a bifurcated hem. Among the sculptor monks that participated in the Buddhist projects led by Jinyeol, Taewon, Cheonghwi, and Yeonghee were the key sculptors that played leading roles in the development of Jinyeol School. Taewon, in particular, faithfully succeeded Jinyeol's styles, including the S-shaped wrinkles on the bottom and the motif of human portrayals on pedestals, but he also added modifications to create his own style. Taewon's styles reflected the characteristics of Period II when he was under Jinyeol.

This paper studies the Buddhist monk Geummun, who sculpted the seated wood Sakyamuni statue, enshrined at Bongdeoksa in Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. This Sakyamuni statue was examined by the request of the temple adminstration in December 6th 2013, and during this research process, a votive document was uncovered inside of this statue. This votive document provides the exact production date, 10th July 1666 of the lunar calender, but there is no indication of the original enshrined temple’s location. Three monk sculptors, whose names are Geummun, Beomnim and Bogwan, participated in to render this Sakyamuni. If we presumed that a normal duration to complete carving, varnishing with lacquer and glittering process was four months, this Buddha rendering project would started at least the first ten days of June of the lunar calender. As one of the prominent monk sculptors in the late Joseon dynasty’s Buddhist sculpture history, Geummun took part in various Buddha rendering projects. He worked with his master, Hyehui, to render Beopjusa wood seated Avalokitesvara statue in 1655 and Seonggwangsa wood seated Avalokitesvara in 1662. In 1666, he led this wood seated Buddha rendering project, and he participated in Jikjisa stone seated Vairocana triad rendering project. As a leading master, he carved Hoengseong-gun Bongboksa wood seated Avalokitesvara statue and repaired Gangnam-gu Bongeunsa’s votive tablet. In 1703, he re-glittered Gijang-gun Jangansa’s stone stead Buddha triad, and created Anseong-si Chiljangsa’ Underworld hall’s statues. This Chiljangsa’s project seems to be Geummun’s last mission. Among these written record, he sometime used a kind of official title in front of this name. If we consider that such a title was given for the people, who provided financial or physical contribution for the government project, Geummun would have a chance to be involved such activities. This Sakyamuni is a medium-sized wooden statue with a height of 84.6 centimeters. The upper body of the statue inclines forward with a slight tilt. The ratio between a head size and its height is 1:035. The round beads of the Sakyamuni’s curly hair and the protrusions on the head are separated with an unclear border. On its oval face are narrowed eyes with a slight upward slant, a plain cylindrical nose, and faintly smiling mouth. The right hand is placed on the lap, striking the pose for the hand seal of touching the earth, or the subjugation of evil, while the left hand is on the lap with the thumb touching the middle finger. The robe drapes from the right shoulder in a gentle curve from below the neck to the elbow, passing the belly towards the left shoulder. The rest of the robe covers the lower body, with a strand gently stretching under the belly. Underneath of robe, this Buddha statue left arm’s bare skin is revealed. This carving way became a iconic way to represent Sakyamuni Buddha. The undergarment on the chest is horizontally folded on the upper part to make a round shape on the front. This study finds that Geummun belongs to the genealogy of great monk sculptors school, whoese members were composed of Taejeon(-1600-1615-), Beomnyeong(-1615~1641-), Hyehui(-1640~1677-), Mail(-1655~1701-), Geummun (-1655~1706-), Cheongyun(-1665~1744-),Yeochan(-1706~1746-), Segyun(-1703~ 1723-), Chwiseup(-1706~1711-), Samin(-1693~1711-).

Buddha Triad enshrined in Daegwangjeon(大光殿) of Sinheung Temple(新興寺), Yangsan is the statue made by a monk-sculptor named Seungho(勝湖) in 1682. Buddha Triad of Sinheung Temple is the largest among Buddhist statues made by Seungho and it is the representative Buddhist statue enshrined in the main hall of the temple. Recently, 13 sacred objects(腹藏物) were found inside the two Buddhist statues. Especially, a inscription(發願文) found inside Bodhisattva Samantabhadra recorded about the precise production date and monk sculptor. Seated Stone Buddha Triad of Sinheung Temple is the most typical Buddhist Statue of Seungho and his stylistic characteristics established during that time had a huge influence on Buddhist statues that were made afterwards. He is active as a monk sculptor from 1659 to 1688 and made 13 Buddhist statues. Buddhist statues of Seungho are divided into three periods in terms of changes in style. Seungho is the representative monk-sculptors who only made zeolite Buddhist statues and he sculptured the highest number of zeolite Buddhist statues. Among monk-sculptors that trained under Seungho, Sangryun(尙倫), Suyeon(守衍), and Sujong(守宗) continuously later worked as monk sculptor while continuing to serve as monk-sculptors for zeolite Buddhist statues from late 17th century to early 18th century.

This paper is a study on Gyechan, a monk-sculptor, who is the creator of the Wooden Seated Buddha enshrined in Cheonbuljeon Hall of Geumsusa Temple in Choryang-dong, Busan. Geumsusa Temple is a Wonhyo Order, and it has been passed down through the history of the temple that Monk Dongho of Hwaeomsa Temple in Gurye, Jeollanam-do rebuilt it in 1910 under the name of Geumsujeongsa Temple. The sculptor of the Wooden Seated Buddha enshrined in Cheonbuljeon Hall of Geumsusa Temple was presumed to be Eunghye, a monk-sculpture of Hyeonjin·Cheongheon school in the 17th century of the late Joseon Dynasty, through the costume prayer, the monk-sculptor that created the Buddha statue was Gyechan that inherited the genealogy of Eunghye, and it was confirmed that it was produced in 1686. The Wooden Seated Buddha of Geumsusa Temple is a small Buddha statue, and the pedestal is carved of a single tree connected to the bottom of the Buddha statue, and the folds of the clothes on the lower body are treated as the skirt covering the pedestal. This production technique and the method of expressing the lower body wrinkles are one of the characteristics shared by the sculptural monks of the Eunghye genealogy, and were also used in the Wooden Seated Bodhisattva of Samgwangsa Temple in Jeju produced by Eunghye and Gyechan in 1671. However, it is believed that the difference from the Buddha statue created by Eunghye was found in the detailed expression, reflecting Gyechan's unique sense of sculpture. Gyechan is an monk-sculptor who started training with Eunghye of Hyunjin·Cheongheon school from the 1640s and participated in the creation of Buddha statues as an assistant monk-sculptor of Eunghye for a long time. Later, it is presumed that he created many Buddha statues when he became chief monk-sculptor, but it was confirmed that they were produced by Gyechan in two cases, the Seated Stone Buddha in Mucharu of Jeokcheonsa Temple in Cheongdo in 1653 and the Wooden Three Directional Buddha in Daeungjeon Hall of Donghwasa Temple in Suncheon in 1657. The Buddha statue of Geumsusa Temple was made in 1686, which belongs to the end of the 17th century, and can be said to be an important commemorative work confirming that Gyechan continued to build the statue from the middle to the end of the 17th century. Wooden Seated Buddha of Geumsusa Temple is believed to be in the last stage of Gyechan's work. The previous two Buddha statues differ in the production technique and the style of the work, which is believed to play a very important role in understanding the change in the style of Gyechan. Gyechan worked as a monk-sculptor for about 40 years from the 1640s to the 1680s, but no case has been confirmed that he was active in the 1660s and 1670s. So, among the Buddha statues whose sculptor is unknown, based on stylistic affinity, works believed to have been carved by Gyechan or monk-sculptors who had the same genealogy as Gyechan were selected and compiled in chronological order. Wooden Seated Buddha of Geumsusa Temple belongs to the unknown later works of Gye-chan, and is the basis for understanding when Gye-chan was active, and is an important example of showing that Gye-chan inherited Eunghye's style while developing his own sense of sculpture.

In the Myungbujeon of Songnimsa temple, Samjangbosal is enshrined with The Ten Kings of Hell instead of Ksitigarbha which was more common. It is also unique that Samjangbosal which is main enshrinement is made of stone while the rest statues in the hall are made of wood and clay. While Samjangbosal was very popular subject matter of the Buddhist painting in 16th century, this is the only remaining sculpture of Samjangbosal throughout the Chosun Dynasty. The design and carving of Buddhist statues in Myungbujeon was done by monk sculptor Seungil, based on the “Ojongbeomeumjip: Collection of Five Orations” which contains all the related rituals with Myungbu such as Suryukjae and Yesujae. Sculptor Seungil who had started his religious training as royal monk in 1620s is presumed to have had very flexible and receptive attitude. He was disciple of monk sculptor Hyunjin who played critical role in resurrection of Buddhist community including royal family out of aftermath of Japanese invasion in early 17 century. He had finished creative and monumental masterpiece Myungbujeon Buddhist sculptures with his excellent sense of formality learnt from renowned monk sculptors Cheonghyun and Mooyeom. In summary, Buddhist statues in Myungbujeon at Songnimsa temple is not only an important example of resurrection of Buddhist community in late Chosun Dynasty, but artistic masterpiece of monk sculptor Seungil who had led the Buddist sculptures in late 17 century with his outstanding artistic competence.

This paper investigates the seated wooden statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, now housed in the Songgwangsa Temple Museum(松廣寺聖寶博物館) in Suncheon(順天), which had originally been enshrined in a building called ‘Hyangnojeon(香爐殿)’ at Gaeheung-sa(開興寺) temple that was located in Boseong(寶城), South Jeolla Province before it was ruined at the end of the Joseon dynasty. In the Joseon period there were several buildings in Buddhist monasteries with the name ‘Hyangnojeon’, which literally means ‘incense-burning building’. In fact, they were places of residence for monks who took care of the incense and other miscellaneous goods used for the services and gave services in the main Buddha halls, where small Avalokitesvara statues such as that of Gaeheung-sa were mostly enshrined. From inside the cavity of the Avalokitesvara statue of Gaeheung- sa consecratory materials including sutras, dharani and votive inscriptions were discovered. They indicate the date – inscribed as 1680 C.E. – and display a list of sponsors and two names of monk-sculptors – Saengnam(色難) and Gwiyil. Of the two, Saengnan was one of the most well-known and active monk-sculptors during the late 17thcentury in the South Jeolla Province, yet much of his sculptural background is stil l not known to this day. Nonetheless, the stylistic features of the Gaeheung-sa Bodhisattvastatue, e.g. a plump rectangular face, subtle lip line, big high nose, flat body and the two curvy hemlines of the drapery that falls to the top of the pedestal, place his artistic style in close proximity to those of monk-sculptor Ingyun(印均) and his younger colleague Samin(三忍) of the Eungwon-Ingyun School (應元・印均派) of monk-sculptor genealogy that was active from the Joseon period until mid 17th century. It is worth noting that in 1662, Saegnan was one of Ingyun’s assistants for his Bhaisajyaguru Buddha statue for Yuma-sa(維摩寺) temple in Hwasun, South Jeolla Province. Saegnan’s relation to the Eungwon-Ingyun School can further be deduced by the fact that his first assistant Doheon(道軒), a monk-sculptor who worked for Saengnan three times in early 1680’s, also was Samin’s assistant. It is therefore fair to assume that Saengnan had trained as one of apprentices of the Eungwon-Ingyun School. Eungwon, Ingyun and Samin are known not only as monk-sculptors but also as Seon(禪) Buddhist monks under Reverend Byokam-Gakseong(碧巖覺性), a disciple of Reverend Buhyu-Seonsu(浮休善修) whose lineage of Seon Buddhism was the most prevalent school of Buddhism in Joseon period. The fact that Saengnan’s home temple, Neungga-sa(楞伽寺), was reconstructed and maintained by monks of Reverend Byogam-Gakseong lineage demonstrates that Saengnan had most likely trained in the Eungwon-Ingyun School of monk-sculptors. Despite the demonstrated relation of close affiliation between Saegnan and the Eungwon-Ingyun School, his works show stylistic features that not only adopt but also diverge from the typical and traditional stylistic aspects seen in the works of his predecessors and colleagues. It appears that Saengnan could have adapted popular trends from works of other monk-sculptors from the mid and late 17thcentury. For example, the rendering of a dignified, solemn face and a robust body in some of Saengnan’s work is reminiscent of the works by Muyum(無染), who is probably the most prominent monk-sculptor of the mid 17th century in South Jeolla Province and who was also much a part of the Byeogam-Gakseong lineage. It seems probable that Saengnan had undergone his basic training as a sculptor in the Eungwon-Ingyun School, and accepted new popular stylistic trends as he grew to be an accomplished master-sculptor.
