The extent and depth of the event plan determines the scope of pedagogical experience in situations and consequently the quality of immersive learning based on our simulated world. In contrast to planning in conventional narrative-based systems mainly pursuing dramatic interests, planning in virtual world-based pedagogical systems strive to provide realistic experiences in immersed situations. Instead of story plot comprising predetermined situations, our inter-event planning method aims at simulating diverse situations that each involve multiple events coupled via their associated agents' conditions and meaningful associations between events occurring in a background world. The specific techniques to realize our planning method include, two-phase planning based on inter-event search and intra-event decomposition (down to the animated action level); autonomous and independent agents to behave proactively with their own belief and planning capability; full-blown background world to be used as the comprehensive stage for all events to occur in; coupling events via realistic association types including deontic associations as well as conventional causality; separation of agents from event roles; temporal scheduling; and parallel and concurrent event progression mechanism. Combining all these techniques, diverse exogenous events can be derived and seamlessly (i.e., semantically meaningfully) integrated with the original event to form a wide scope of situations providing chances of abundant pedagogical experiences. For effective implementation of plan execution, we devise an execution scheme based on multiple priority queues, particularly to realize concurrent progression of many simultaneous events to simulate its corresponding reality. Specific execution mechanisms include modeling an action in terms of its component motions, adjustability of priority for agent across different events, and concurrent and parallel execution method for multiple actions and its expansion for multiple events.

We develop a simulation method that affords very high variability of virtual pedagogical situations involving many independent plans, still achieves authoring (or implementation) scalability. While each individual plan would be coherently drawn up by an agent for its respective goal, those independently-made plans might be coincidentally intertwined in their execution. The inevitable non-determinism involved in this multi-event plan encompassing pre-planned and unforeseen events is resolved by (multi-phase) dynamic planning and articulated sequencing of events in contrast to static planning and monolithic authoring in conventional narrative systems. Connections between events are dictated by their associated rules and their actual connections are dynamically determined in execution time by current conditions of background-world. This unified connection scheme across pre-planned and unforeseen events allows a multi-plan, multi-agent situation to be coherently planned and executed in a global scale. To further the variability of a situation, the inter-event coupling is made in a fine level of action along with a limited episteme of each agent involved. We confirm analytically the viability of our approach with respect to the situation variability and authoring scalability, and demonstrate its practicality with an implementation of a composite situation.

The purpose of this study is to establish a method for assessing a building's risk against disaster, tentatively named the Korean integrated disaster evaluation simulator (K-IDES). Based on previous studies, FEMA's risk management series and FEMA IRVS are selected as case studies for developing a frame work of K-IDES, through the comparative analysis of domestic building design guides, codes, and special acts related to disasters, in order to develop a risk assessment methodology for quantitative results. The assessment method consists of a classification system and calculating risk, and a simulation applying the developed checklist in K-IDES to similar types of high-rise buildings will be conducted to validate its accuracy. The final goal is to systemize an integrated risk management in a high-rise building against disasters for the purpose of recognizing vulnerable areas from the beginning of the design process and reinforcing it from potential threats after construction.

Numerical simulation of a flow past an undulating two-dimensional fish-like body is carried out by using Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and our newly-proposed Immersed Boundary Velocity Correction Method (IBVCM). The fish body used in the simulation is constructed from the NACA0012 airfoil. Based on the kinematics for undulatory swimming fish, the midline of the fish-like body oscillates transversally in the form of traveling wave. The current study is focused on the effects of Reynolds number and the character of midline oscillation on the generation of propulsion force. The investigation indicates that the higher Reynolds number, or higher frequency, or higher amplitude of midline oscillation produces a higher propulsion force. Among the parameters affecting the generation of propulsion force, the amplitude of midline oscillation is the most noticeable factor.

This paper deals with modeling and computer simulation of a full multibody vehicle model for a driving simulator. The multibody vehicle model is based on the recursive formulation and a corresponding simulation code is generated automatically from AUTOCODE, which is a symbolic computation package developed by the authors using MAPLE. The paper describes a procedure for automatically generating a highly efficient simulation code for the full vehicle model, while incorporating realistically modeled components. The following issues have been accounted for in the procedure, including software design for representing a mechanical system in symbolic form as a set of computer data objects, a multibody formulation for systems with various types of connections between bodies, automatic manipulation of symbolic expressions in the multibody formulation, interface design for allowing users to describe unconventional force-and torque-producing components, and a method for accommodating external computer subroutines that may have already been developed. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method have been demonstrated by the simulation code developed and implemented for driving simulation.

This study describes the numerical simulation of two-dimensional droplet formation and the following motion by using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) with the phase field equation. The free energy model is used to treat the interfacial force and the deformation of a binary fluid system, drawn into a cross-junction microchannel. While one, fluid is introduced through the central inlet channel, the other fluid is drawn into the main channel through the two vertical inlet channels. Due to the effect of surface tension on the interface between the two fluids, the droplets of the first fluid are formed near the cross-junction. The aim in this investigation is to examine the applicability of LBM to the numerical analysis of the droplet formation and its motion in the microchannel. It was found from comparison with the experimentally visualized patterns that LBM with the free energy model can reproduce the droplet formation successfully. However because of the stability problem which is intrinsic for high surface-tension cases, it requires a very long computational time. This issue is to be resolved in the future.

Predicting the mechanical properties of the 3-D scaffold using finite element method (FEM) simulation is important to the practical application of tissue engineering. However, the porous structure of the scaffold complicates computer simulations, and calculating scaffold models at the pore level is time-consuming. In some cases, the demands of the procedure are too high for a computer to run the standard code. To address this problem, the representative volume element (RVE) theory was introduced, but studies on RVE modeling applied to the 3-D scaffold model have not been focused. In this paper, we propose an improved FEM-based RVE modeling strategy to better predict the mechanical properties of the scaffold prior to fabrication. To improve the precision of RVE modeling, we evaluated various RVE models of newly designed 3-D scaffolds using FEM simulation. The scaffolds were then constructed using microstereolithography technology, and their mechanical properties were measured for comparison.

Purpose: Simulation-based education plays a critical role in nursing by allowing stu- dents to acquire clinical competencies in a safe and controlled environment. However, current evaluation tools for simulation scenarios often lack standardization, resulting in inconsistencies when assessing the effectiveness of such programs. Methods: This study aimed to develop a comprehensive Nursing Simulation Scenario Evaluation Tool using the Real-Time Delphi method. A panel of 10 experts in nursing and simulation education participated in two rounds of surveys. The evaluation criteria were derived from the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning Standards of Best Practice and relevant literature. Survey items were refined through expert consensus using content validity ratios and coefficient of variation val- ues. The finalized tool was further enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI)?based evalu- ation capabilities to support objective and systematic assessment. The tool was registered and patented in the Republic of Korea (Korean Intellectual Property Office Registration No. 10-2024-0051234) to acknowledge its innovation and technical merit. Results: The process resulted in an evaluation tool comprising eight key domains and 36 items, covering scenario structure, learning objectives, preparation, script development, debriefing, facilitation, expected outcomes, and scenario validity. A Kendall’s coefficient of concordance of 0.739 indicated strong agreement among the experts. Conclusion: This study successfully developed a standardized and validated tool to im- prove the reliability and effectiveness of simulation-based education in nursing. The tool addresses a key gap in current educational practices and enhances consistency in evalu- ating nursing simulation scenarios. Future studies should focus on validating its applica- tion across diverse educational environments.

Earthquake was called The Head of Catastrophe in many countries because of its sudden, wide-ranging, and severe loss characteristics. Due to the density of people, economy and buildings in cities, the development and evolution of the earthquake disaster chain presents more complex and varied systemic features. There have been many studies of seismic scenarios, most of which focus on the simulation of the disaster itself, but little attention has been paid to the disaster mechanism and its control methods within the urban system. In the view of urban systemic characteristics, this paper analyzes the evolution and development of earthquake disaster scenarios in urban systems. Based on the interaction of various elements of the urban system, the content system of urban seismic scenario research is clarified. Finally, considering the dual scenarios of disaster and response, an urban seismic scenario construction method is proposed which covers risk assessment, disaster simulation, task and capability matching, emergency preparedness plan. We hope that this research can develop the urban earthquake scenario research and provide reference for the earthquake disaster reduction.

This paper presents an interim result of a study on virtual LiDAR sensor modeling for autonomous driving simulators. Based on a basic knowledge on the characteristics of pulsed light beams, which may be dependent on the color and material of the object to be reflected, a simple model of equation for the intensity is used for modeling the reflected power of beams of LiDAR. Experiments using a real LiDAR and a virtual one to distinguish colors reveals that the accessibility to colors of the objects is essential for modeling of LiDAR sensors in autonomous driving simulators.

In this paper, we present an interim result of the study on the effective testing and verification method of autonomous driving algorithms by configuring a simulator-tosimulator (S2S) co-simulation test environment prior to the simulator-to-real (S2R) co-simulation test. The method is configured by two driving simulators where one driving simulator is regarded as a mimic of the vehicle on road in a realistic world whereas the other is used as a test simulator to emulate the various driving environment in a virtual world. Since autonomous driving algorithms developed via virtual scenarios and object information can be easily tested and verified with the ultimate safety, the system reliability can be increased in development phase. Therefore, the proposed S2S co-simulation test method is expected to contribute to establishing a S2R co-simulation test environment.

Traffic congestion is a source of significant economic and social costs in urban areas. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are a promising means to help alleviate congestion by utilizing advanced sensing, computing, and communication technologies. This paper proposes and investigates a basic and advanced ITS framework Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) using wireless Vehicle to Roadside (Centralized ATIS model: CA model) and Vehicle to Vehicle (DeCentralized ATIS model: DCA model) communication and assuming an ideal communication environment in the typical 6X6 urban grid traffic network. Results of this study indicate that an ATIS using wireless communication can save travel time given varying combinations of system characteristics: traffic flow, communication radio range, and penetration ratio. Also, all tested metrics of the CA and DCA models indicate that the system performance of both models is almost identical regardless of varying traffic demand and penetration ratios. Therefore, DCA model can be a reasonable alternative to the fixed infrastructure‐based ATIS model (CA model

The flow between two rotating concentric cylinders, also known as Taylor-Couette flow system, is one of the most widely studied systems in the classical fluid dynamics. In this work, a two-dimensional Taylor-Couette flow system is simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method combined with the smoothed profile method. The fluid flow between the rotating cylinders is solved by lattice Boltzmann equation while the curved boundaries of the cylinders are treated with a smoothed profile function. To assess the validity of the present simulation technique, three different cases of rotation of the cylinders were considered: ⅰ) inner cylinder is only rotating, ⅱ) outer cylinder is only rotating, and ⅲ) both inner and outer cylinders are rotating. For all the three cases, the numerical results of the flow velocity in azimuthal direction and the hydrodynamic torque acting on the cylinders are in good agreement with the corresponding analytical solution results.

The molecular dynamic simulation method is usually used to analyse microscopic fluid fields. To use this method in engineering problems with real scales of molecules needs more time and greater computer power than we have now. To overcome these limitations, the expansion method using dimensionless and similarity of physical quantities of molecules is studied and introduced for the engineering scale fluid dynamics.

We consider the Fuzzy clustering which is devised for partitioning a set of objects into a certain number of groups by assigning the membership probabilities to each object. The researches carried out in this field before show that the Fuzzy clustering concept is involved so much that for a certain set of data, the main purpose of the clustering cannot be attained as desired. Thus we Propose a new objective function, named as Fuzzy-Entroppy Function in order to satisfy the main motivation of the clustering which is classifying the data clearly. Also we suggest Mean Field Annealing Algorithm as an optimization algorithm rather than the ISODATA used traditionally in this field since the objective function is changed. We show the Mean Field Annealing Algorithm works pretty well not only for the new objective function but also for the classical Fuzzy objective function by indicating that the local minimum problem resulted from the ISODATA can be improved.

Recently, due to the deterioration of watermains and the detachment of scale which is accumulated on the watermain surface, water quality accidents in a water supply network occur frequently. As scale accumulated on watermains is stabilized, it may not cause water quality accidents under the normal operating condition. However, due to water hammer or transient flow caused by the abrupt velocity and/or direction of flow change, it can be detached from the watermain surface resulting in water quality accidents. To prevent these kinds of water quality accidents, it is required to remove scale by watermain cleaning regularly. Many researches about flushing which is the most popular water cleaning method are focused on the desirable velocity criteria and the cleaning condition to accomplish the effect of flushing whereas less amount of research effort is given to develop a method to consider whether the desirable velocity for flushing can be obtained before flushing is performed. During flushing, the major and minor headloss is occurred when flushing water flows through a hydrant or drain valve. These headloss may slow down the velocity of flushing water so that it can reduce the flushing effect. Thus, in this study, we suggest a method to simulate the flow velocity of flushing water using "MinorLoss Coefficient" and "Emitter Coefficient" in EPANET. The suggested method is applied to a sample network and the water supply network of "A" city in Korea to compare the flushing effect between "flushing through a hydrant" and "flushing through a drain valve". In case of "flushing through a hydrant", if the hydraulic condition ocurring from a watermain pipe connecting to the inlet pipe of a hydrant to the outlet of a hydrant is not considered, the actual flowrate and velocity of a flow is less than the simulated flowrate and velocity of a flow. In case of "flushing through a drain valve", the flushing velocity and flowrate can be easily simulated and the difference between the simulated and the actual velocity and flowrate is not significant. Also, "flushing through a drain valve" is very effective to flushing a long-length pipe section because of its efficiency to obtain the flushing velocity. However, the number and location of a drain valve is limited compared to a hydrant so that "flushing through a drain valve" has a limited application in the field. For this reason, the engineer should consider various field conditions to come up with a proper flushing plan.
