The paper searches and analyzes the image of Iseult Gonne in some of Yeats's poems. It is not difficult to locate Iseut's images in most of the poems that contain her image, except the poem, "Long-legged Fly." In this poem the young girl at puberty practicing a tinker shuffle picked up on a street is said to be Maud Gonne, as definitely noted by Jeffares. But this paper claims that she is Iseult Gonne on the basis of Yeats's recording what he has witnessed, the young girl barefoot dancing and singing, thinking that nobody is looking at the edge of the water and sand at Normandy. And one of the important poems that immortalizes Iseult is "To a Child Dancing in the Wind," singing what's permanent in the present Iseult, against the passing of life and time. This concern deeply permeates most of Yeats's Iseult poems, as one of them being "Two Years Later" and another is a poem, "Why Should Not Old Men Be Mad?" (written in 1936, three years before he died in 1939) in which the poet calls Iseult's husband a dunce, because Yeats loves and pities Iseult so much. To Yeats and in his poems, Iseult Gonne symbolizes eternal beauty or something that should remain for good. Not only that, but also the most beautiful and strongest of Iseult Gonne poems is "Owen Aherne and his Dancers" written immediately after Yeats's marriage to Georgie, with two sections, once the first being called "The Lover Speaks" and the second "The Heart Replies." As the image of dance indicates, it is about Iseult Gonne, with Yeats in disguise. It signals a new beginning for Yeats in relation to his poetry and to his life-long love Iseult.

This paper examines some of Yeats’s poems referring to the aging problem. While many poems on this issue have been discussed, few have put their focus on the poems related to Iseult Gonne. Aging takes a toll on Yeats when he feels immoderate passion for his age: he realizes that he is too old to win Iseult’s love. This paper investigates Yeats’s ways to solve the aging problem. The old man often admires beautiful Iseult, but he is tormented by the thought of his old age. However, the poet sublimates his grief to the lofty thought that old men are much wiser than the youth. So instead of mourning his decrepit body, he gives fatherly advice to Iseult. The Mask is another escape from the old poet. Wearing the Mask helps him attain the lofty dream, getting over the hard reality of being an old man.

While Yeats’s lifelong love for Maud Gonne is widely recognized and has profoundly influenced his life and literature, his affection for Iseult Gonne, Maud’s stepdaughter, has received comparatively less attention. This aspect, however, deserves further consideration. His love for Iseult was equally deep and enduring, and its intensity is evident in many of his works. Particularly notable is Yeats’s frequent use of the image of the dancer as a symbol of ideal beauty, often associated with Iseult Gonne, reflecting the profound depth of his love for her. This recurring symbolism offers an important clue to understanding Yeats’s feelings for Iseult. This paper examines the rich imagery connected to Iseult in Yeats’s poetry, offering a deeper understanding of his feelings as expressed in his love poems.

This paper concerns how Arnold’s narrative love poem based on an Arthurian legend, Tristram and Iseult, contains in it Arnold’s philosophic stoicism grounded in rationalism beyond the traditional love-theme.The major deviation from the legend itself is Arnold’s almost prejudiced treatment of Tristram’s wife, Iseult of Brittany. In Arnold’s hand, she was uncommonly extended as a dramatic character, being idealized with her capacity of transcendental love and moral grandeur. Her love and attitude toward her husband are constantly compared with those of the other Iseult’s; and her dignified moral stance with the hectic, too human, irrational emotions of the love-couple, Tristram and Iseult of Ireland. Not just that, Arnold, unlike other writers, devoted the last, most important section solely to Iseult of Brittany and her “visionary” children. In addition, this paper argues that Arnold’s “original” creation of the Merlin/Vivian tale in the last section, also has to do with Arnold’s attitude toward the widowed Iseult and eventually with his idea of transcendental love as part of “culture.”

The present Study compares Tristram and Iseult’s love in Tennyson’s “The Last Tournament” with that in Robinson’s Tristram. The poets sketched the love of Tristram and Iseult from different perspectives. Tennyson, a representative Victorian poet, portrayed Tristram as a person who leads a natural life free from the traditional ideals, morals, and values. Tristram follows natural law in his love with Iseult, and just as things change, he believes his love depends upon some natural and circumstantial conditions. Robinson, on the other hand, represented Tristram and Iseult’s love as love for itself. By omitting a love potion for their abrupt falling in love and delaying their consummation until they meet at Joyous Gard, Robinson characterized their love as fundamental and justifiable. Through waiting and suffering, their love grows and even overcomes time. Even in the face of death, they feel fulfilled and peaceful. While Tennyson represented their love as earthly and conditional, Robinson portrayed it as permanent and transcendental.
