The Water and Land Ritual 水陸會[齋] is a ceremonial rite aimed at rescuing lost souls on land and water. The existing paintings depicting this ritual from the Joseon Dynasty era are pieces related to the Water and Land Ritual, capturing its essence. Within these Water and Land Ritual paintings from Joseon Dynasty, various images associated with rescue are expressed and showcase changes over time. In essence, the Water and Land Ritual paintings from the early Joseon period distinctly depict the exchange of ‘Gamno’ that symbolizes salvation of wandering spirits achieved through the Water and Land Ritual. However, in later Joseon artworks, the focus shifts towards concepts like ‘transcendence to paradise’ through intermediaries such as the ‘Byeollyeondae’ (Pedestal of the White Lotus) or ‘Geumeungyo’ (Bridge of Gold and Silver), and the expression of acts termed as ‘ritual performance.’ This transition indicates a shift from representing the invisible material of Gamno for spiritual salvation towards emphasizing the societal changes that prioritized the practical purpose of the Water and Land Ritual in reality, highlighting the necessity of the ritual and the actual purpose of transcending to paradise.

Gamrotaenghwa from the Joseon period is a painting which illustrates nectar serving to Yukdo (six states of karmic existence) Jungsaeng (Sattva). This Buddhist painting was produced for about 4 hundred years from the late 16th century to the early 20th century. It expressed a pattern of reactions to human death through a Buddhist ritual. In the 18th century, as economic indicators got favorable, the Korean caste system started to break down, and commoners’ self-consciousness surged. With their willingness to create and share their own culture, a folk painting emerged as a new genre of painting. A folk painting illustrated ordinary people who had healthy and honest lifestyles with liberal beauty. Even though Buddhist paintings were strictly developed according to uigwe (protocols), gamrotaenghwa was able to freely reflect an author’s creativity and painting trends at that time. Since this Buddhist painting well described commoners’ lifestyles, this study is able to investigate transition in painting during the late Joseon period. In addition, it’s been confirmed that diverse folk painting elements were reflected in a very specific manner. Furthermore, gamrotaenghwa and folk painting reveal the cultural liberation of the commoners who wanted to transform the feudalism into a modern society and dynamics of the times.

The purpose of this article is to study on the public common meaning of Nectar ritual painting in Water land ritual. We can find the social participatory publicness in the Water land ritual to identify the public nationwide and private spontaneous participation as social participatory publicness. Firstly. Lee Taejo’s most important Buddhist protective policy had been national water land ritual. He had held national Water land ritual at the Samhwa temple in 1395, and at the Jingwan temple in 1397. The national Water land ritual had been recognized as national background with private pray to materializing hope to opening the public through life respect around the essentiality of social publicness. Secondly, Nectar ritual paintings are buddhist paintings used in ceremonies for the dead. The paintings contain depiction of Buddha in the upper part, and scenes related to the dead rituals in the middle part. The lower part shows scenes of beings in the six paths of transmigration, focusing on the human level. It reflects the gruesome lives of those who lost their jobs and roamed around those who had been dead from starvation and diseases. The conviviality is considered to be the attitude of sharing life’s thirst with others in transcendent oriented publicness. Thirdly, The publicity meaning of Nectar ritual painting in Water land ritual is regarded as social participatory publicness of public solidarity leads to a few controversies between 'something public' and 'something private'. Therefore, in order to understand the meaning of publicness, we need to consider the public common succor such as benefit to others including self interest through the mediation the private with the public.

This article aims to examine the significance and characteristics of gamrodo (nectar ritual painting) from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. About seventy of nectar rituals paintings produced from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century during the Joseon Dynasty are extant today. While these paintings continued to achieve conventional compositions, their iconographies changed over time. Such iconographical changes seem to have resulted from ritual manuals, patrons, and regional characteristics. This article analyzes distinct features of nectar ritual paintings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by focusing on the Gamrodo produced in 1880 at Cheongnyeonsa Temple. The nineteenth-century nectar ritual paintings created after the production of gamrodo in 1868 at Heungguksa Temple in the Suraksan Mountain are considerably different from earlier examples. The upper section of the Heungguksa gamrodo depicts the seven Buddhas looking straight ahead as if they have just descended to attend a ritual. The middle section illustrates more detailed scenes of the ritual, including Buddhist ritual dancers and musicians performing in front of the food-bestowal altar. It also includes monks preparing for the ritual held during the daytime, large-scale ritual objects, and spectators. The lower sections illustrate genre paintings. This Heungguksa gamrodo served as a standardized model for other nineteenth-century gamrodo and iconographically exerted a substantial influence on them. Among the nineteenth-century nectar ritual paintings, the gamrodo (1880) at Cheongnyeonsa presents distinctive iconographical elements in its middle section. Compared to the middle sections of other nectar ritual paintings, the mid part of the Cheongnyeonsa gamrodo emphasizes the scenes of performing Buddhist ritual dance and music. The figures are also wearing rather distinct garments. Moreover, the Cheongnyeonsa gamrodo employs decorative techniques, as shown in the use of gold leaves in mandorlas of the Buddhas, Buddhist memorial tablets on the food-bestowal altar, and auspicious patterns. These characteristics of the Cheongnyeonsa gamrodo were formed by the dominant painting style of Hyegwa Bonggan and Gosan Chukyeon, the prominent monk-painters who worked near Seoul, and by the sponsorship of commissioners led by court ladies. The nectar ritual paintings, including the Cheongnyeonsa gamrodo, produced at temples related to Joseon royal court around this time, embrace the motifs of decorative paintings of the Joseon royal court. In these paintings, Buddhist memorial tablets of Joseon court-related figures are placed on top of the food-bestowal altar. The banners of the Vairocana Buddha Triad are hanging over the altar as the symbol of Buddhist s and rituals. The gamrodo enshrined at Cheongnyeonsa Temple in Wangsip-ri of Hanseong-bu (present-day Seoul) in 1880 represents the nectar ritual paintings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, incorporating characteristics of the commissioners, the enshrinement in royal temples, and Buddhist rituals of the nineteenth century.

Women in the Mithila region in Nepal have been severely restricted and controlled by the male members of families. The Mithila community follows deeply entrenched patriarchal traditions. The women’s home-centric culture in Mithila society has resulted in the development of rich ritual art, passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter. Mithila homes are often decorated with extensive place painting and wall paintings, which depict religious scenes and motifs especially in the religious festivals and other important occasions like weddings. Since the early 1990s, the wall paintings have been transferred to paper for income generating opportunities by NGO running ‘Janakpur Women’s Development Center(JWDC)’ as well as some individual artists. This study aims at exploring that Mithila women’s painting ritual art on paper is enabling the empowerment of women. This paper argues that women engaging in painting ritual art, namely ‘Mithila paintings’ are increasingly finding opportunities to empower themselves in terms of finding of economic independence and voice of their own, improving of self-esteem, breaking of gender-stereotypes, and looking at socio-political issues from new perspective. However, in spite of undoubtedly improving of the lives of many women who are engaging in paintings collectively or individually, it takes a long time to empower women in the strong patriarchal Mithila community.

〈Yeongsanhoe Gwaebul-do (Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting:靈山會掛佛圖)〉of the Joseon Dynasty pictorializes the Dharma meeting scenes of the Vulture Peak Mountain of Sakyamuni Buddha at the Main Great Hall described in 『Lotus Sutra (法華經)』. Among them, 〈Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting〉(1653) in Yoengsusa Temple, Jincheon and 〈Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting〉(1658) in Cheongryongsa Temple, Anseong show a lot of changes such as the appearance of ‘Cheongmunjasang (Image of the Listener:聽聞者像)’in the screen which could not be seen before. Ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings of the Joseon Dynasty known to date were done by starting with 〈The World-honored Buddha Banner Painting〉 in Jungnimsa Temple, Naju which was produced in 1622 and being variously interpreted in forms of Dokjondo, gathering paintings, Buddha Trikaya paintings, paintings of three worlds Buddha, and paintings of Trikaya and three world Buddhas until the late Joseon Dynasty. As the Joseon Dynasty gradually recovered the stable period after a time of chaos including Japanese invasions of Korea (1592~1593), ceremonies including the water and land ceremony and Celebration of Buddha’s Sermon on Vulture Peak Mountain were prevalent to soothe popular sentiment in the Buddhism circle. This says that previous Buddhism which had focused on the royal family or aristocrats dug deep into the vulgar herd. In the times and circumstances, the point that <Cheongmunjasang (Images of the Listener)> appeared in <Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting> is part to understand Buddhism to the public. Buddhist monk-typed Cheongmunjasang produced after the 17th century appeared starting from ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings (1653) and showed the aspect that Bodhisattva-typed Cheongmunjasang which borrowed the woodcut print of the Ming Dynasty (明代) was changed to Buddhist monk-typed Cheongmunjasang. Especially, Park, Lan (朴蘭) who produced ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings in Cheongryongsa Temple in 1658 is guessed to be a court painter of Dohwaseo and this canbe found that the royal family contributed to the creation of Buddhist paintings. At that time, Myeongok (明玉) and Beomneung (法能) who had been active as court painters in Chungcheong-do produced ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings in Yeongsusa Temple (1653) and participated in doing ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings in Cheongryongsa Temple (1658). Myeongok was thought to reflect icons of the various woodblock-printed books which had been possessed in each temple in the drafts of Buddhist paintings as he participated in the Buddhist service of scripture publication as the sculptor of the woodcut print of 『Lotus Sutra』produced in the who area of Chungcheong-do. Exchanges among these temples served as a momentum of improve levels of Buddhist paintings. They showed a new side of Buddhist paintings by escaping from the framework of the iconic form that they dogmatically (敎條的) followed and accepting eloquent line drawing and flexible colors. The screen composition follows the form of the gathering paintings which had been done before. For ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings in Yeongsusa Temple (1653) among them, the composition is characterized by much more complexity as the expression contents got to be various. The screen describes various objects which had been ancestral ritual formalities realistically and concretely. The ritual ceremony Buddhist paintings in Cheongryongsa Temple (1658) show the tendency to reduce the contents or change several persons depending on the sizes of the screen. The works of art similar to this include in Ansimsa Temple (1652), Hwaeomsa Temple (1653), and 〈Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting〉in Biamsa Temple(1657). When the above contents are combined, Cheongmunjasang shown in 〈Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting〉in Yeongsusa Temple and Cheongryongsa Temple is a product (所...

The tomb mural of Buddha worshiping in Jangcheon tomb No.1 is a visual guide to the Buddhist rituals of Goguryeo in the late 5th century. It was not just a description of a deep bow in front of a statue, but a bowing method of Buddhist monk was clearly meant to bring the forehead to earth. In this paper, I discussed the background of such a stylistic expression that was not well appeared even in the art ancient India. In conclusion, the motif of this Buddhist temple is presumed to have originated from a scene in which Sumeda devoted himself to laying her body down on the mud in a Jataka story that is often depicted in Gandhara art. It is believed that Buddhists in East Asia regarded this scene of particular narrative as a way of expressing their general respect to Buddha. East Asian who was especially used to the deep bow already in existence, would naturally consider Sumeda's actions as an act of tribute to Buddha. Furthermore, the Buddhist followers on the left and right of the Buddha indirectly showed that they had been Pradaksina ritual by moving arround the Buddha. Lastly, it is presumed that the painting depicts a scene that takes place in outside, not indoors, for context. This is not just a question of indoors or outdoors, but whether the Buddha on the mural is a simple Buddha statue or a portrait of Buddha himself. If this is a representation of a Buddha’s sermon performed outdoors, it is most likely that the Buddha in the mural is not a statue, but an actual Buddha.

The developmental background of Jakbeopmu have been dated and determined through document reviews and iconography in this paper. Through the examination of the forms of Jakbeopmu, instrumental constitution and costumes, Jakbeopmu can be classified into three types. First, it is based on the assumption that songs, playing instruments and dance were performed at the same time in the buddhist rituals, Jakbeopmu has the same history as Beompae. The record of Beompae is found in a document written in the early 6 century, Gongyangmu might be also preformed in the same century. Second, Geumganggabosal and Geumgangmubosal appear in ‘Yaksulgeumgangyugabun byerlsungwuysujeungbeopmun’ written in the middle of 8 century. Considering the prayer of the buddhist ceremony reflects the thought and the cultures of that time on the basis of Buddhist sutras, Jakbeopmu began at least 1200 years ago. Third, the current form of Jakbeopmu appeared in the scripture written in 1496. So it has been handed down through 500 years. Iconographic references can be found on Amrita painting drawn after the middle of 18C. There are well-depicted Jakbeopmu, songs, playing instruments and dance on the Amrita painting drawn in the Joseon dynasty. It also depicted various instruments for buddhist ritual, costumes and Jangeom which is buddhist decoration. It is precious cultural material and historical product that dipicted social life customs, hand crafts, arts and various dance moves.
