The Water and Land Ritual 水陸會[齋] is a ceremonial rite aimed at rescuing lost souls on land and water. The existing paintings depicting this ritual from the Joseon Dynasty era are pieces related to the Water and Land Ritual, capturing its essence. Within these Water and Land Ritual paintings from Joseon Dynasty, various images associated with rescue are expressed and showcase changes over time. In essence, the Water and Land Ritual paintings from the early Joseon period distinctly depict the exchange of ‘Gamno’ that symbolizes salvation of wandering spirits achieved through the Water and Land Ritual. However, in later Joseon artworks, the focus shifts towards concepts like ‘transcendence to paradise’ through intermediaries such as the ‘Byeollyeondae’ (Pedestal of the White Lotus) or ‘Geumeungyo’ (Bridge of Gold and Silver), and the expression of acts termed as ‘ritual performance.’ This transition indicates a shift from representing the invisible material of Gamno for spiritual salvation towards emphasizing the societal changes that prioritized the practical purpose of the Water and Land Ritual in reality, highlighting the necessity of the ritual and the actual purpose of transcending to paradise.

水陸會[齋]는 육지와 물의 孤魂들을 구원하기 위한 의식이며, 조선시대에 제작되어 현전하는水陸會圖는 이러한 수륙회의 모습을 옮긴, 수륙회와 관련이 있는 작품이다. 이러한 조선시대 수륙회도에는 救援과 관련이 있는 여러 가지 이미지들이 표현되어 있으며, 시대에 따라서 변화하는 모습을 보여준다. 조선전기 수륙회도는 수륙회를 통해 얻어지는 고혼의 구원을 대표하는 물질인 '감로'의 주고받음을 명확하게 표현하고 있는 반면, 조선후기의 작품들에서는 벽련대나 금은교와 같은 매개체를 통한 '극락으로의 천도', 그리고 '의식의 설행'이라는 행위의 표현에 초점을 맞추는 것으로 변화한다. 이는 고혼의 구제를 위한 감로라는 눈에 보이지 않는 물질을 표현하던 것에서 현실에서의 수륙회라는 의식의 필요성, 그리고 극락으로의 천도라는 실제적인 목적을 더 중요시 한 사회적 변화에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있다.
