In this study, a experimental work to investigate the influence of a turbulent wake flow on the velocity distribution of a diffuser with PIV method. The turbulent wake is generated by a rectangular prism, which is installed at the inlet of a diffuser. The results show that the velocity recovery of the subsonic diffuser is dependent on the height and location of rectangular prism. It is found that a certain height of the rectangular prism to generate the turbulent wake give a better velocity recovery, compared with no rectangular prism.

This paper presents a hybrid control algorithm for the active noise control in the rectangular enclosure using an active/passive foam actuator. The hybrid control composes of the adaptive feedforward with feedback loop in which the adaptive feedforward control uses the well-known filtered-x LMS(least mean square) algorithm and the feedback loop consists of the sliding mode controller and observer. The hybrid control has its robustness for both transient and persistent external disturbances and increases the convergence speed due to the reduced variance of the jiltered-x signal by adding the feedback loop. The sliding mode control (SMC) is used to incorporate insensitivity to parameter variations and rejection of disturbances and the observer is used to get the state information in the controller deign. An active/passive smart foam actuator is used to minimize noise actively using an embedded PVDF film driven by an electrical input and passively using an absorption-foam. The error path dynamics is experimentally identified in the form of the auto-regressive and moving-average using the frequency domain identification technique. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid control and the feasibility of the smart foam actuator.

Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause serious problems in cable-stayed bridges. Externally attached dampers have been used to provide an effective means to suppress the vibration of relatively short stay-cables. For very long stay-cables, however, such damper systems are rendered ineffective, as the dampers need to be attached near the end of cables for aesthetic reasons. This paper investigates a new control system to mitigate the cable vibration. The proposed control system which consists of a laminated rubber bearing and an internal damper may be installed inside of the cable anchorage. A simple analytical model of the cable-damper system is developed first based on the taut string representation of the cable. The response of a cable with the proposed control system is obtained and then compared to those of the cable with and without an external passive damper. The proposed stay-cable vibration control system is shown to perform better than the optimal passive viscous damper, thereby demonstrating its applicability in large cable-stayed bridges for mitigation of rain-wind induced vibration of stay-cables.

This paper presents a strategy and an algorithm for levitation control of an over-actuated passive maglev tray system. The passive maglev tray system has more actuators than its degrees of freedom. The actuators of the system are switching when the tray travels longitudinally. Furthermore, the levitation forces of the actuators are non-homogeneous because the actuation devices are not in the moving platform. These characteristics make a limit in using conventional control approaches for levitation. For smooth actuator switching, the actuator force generation should be dependent on longitudinal positions of the tray. To enable constant pose tracking, this research introduces a control strategy and a control algorithm based on integral controllers on virtual variables. The states of the tray are estimated using a Kalman filter and fed to the proposed controller. The performances of the proposed control strategy and the algorithm are validated through tests.

Active movement is able to actively contract his muscles and move a segment either with or without assistance. This movement maintain physiologic elasticity and contractility of the participating muscles, provide sensory feedback from the contracting muscles and stimulus for bone integrity as well as increase circulation and prevent thrombus formation, in addition to develop coordination and moor skills for functional activities. Passive movement is the motion to the external force; gravity, machine, another individuals. Active movement is more activated rather than passived on the central nervous system. Therefore, we think that active movement is more effected facilitating through specific inhibitory mobilization of muscle.

This study develops a passive traffic signal priority control algorithm for emergency vehicles. The passive priority control estimates and applies signal times for each signalized intersection on the emergency vehicle’s route when an emergency call is received. As signals are controlled before the emergency vehicle leaves for its destination, it is possible to clear the queues at each intersection more effectively. Most of the previous studies applied preemption, which ends green time of cross streets when the emergency vehicle arrives at each intersection. This study applies green extension and early green in order not to shift the order of phases, and guarantees minimum green time for each phase. Simulation results show that the delay of emergency vehicles decreases when the signals are controlled. It is expected that delays can be decreased further by integrating the active priority control with the passive priority control algorithm presented in this study.

This research proposes new tram signal coordination model, called MAXBAND MILP-Tram for a passive tram signal priority strategy. The proposed model was formulated based on the MAXBAND model that was a traditional arterial signal optimization model. The model could calculate the bandwidth solutions for both general-purpose-lane traffic and median-tram-lane traffic. Lower progression speed are applied for the tram traffic considering lower running speed and dwell time at the stations. A phase sequence procedure determines the green times and left-turn phase sequences for tram traffic in median tram lane. To estimate the performance of the MILP-Tram model, the control delay of trams were estimated using the micro simulation model, VISSIM. The analysis results showed 57 percent decrease of the tram compared to the conventional signal timing model. The delay for car, however, increased 18 percent. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the passive tram signal priority strategy using the offset and phase sequence optimization was effective in reducing the person delay under the congested traffic condition.

In view of the problem of difficult to suppress surplus torque and to obtain high servo accuracy at high frequency in the passive torque servo system(PTSS), the neural network PID control strategy with surplus torque compensation based on dynamic fuzzy neural network (DFNN) and double-stator motor is proposed. Firstly the model of the PTSS is built and the mathematical model of surplus torque is derived. Then the model of surplus torque is identified by DFNN. The surplus torque is estimated in real time and converted directly to the control signals of outer stator of double-stator motor which produces torque to compensate the surplus torque. Finally the parameters of the neural network PID (NNPID) controller are adjusted in real time according to the Jacobian information and system error. The Jacobian information is obtained from the online identification of PTSS by RBF neural network. The simulation results show that surplus torque model is close to the actual surplus torque system, that compensation control largely eliminates the surplus torque, that system performance is improved and that the control strategy is successful.

Combustion oscillations are caused by a coupling between acoustic waves and unsteady heat release. They can be eliminated using passive controller such as a helmholtz resonator. But, helmholtz resonator is normally only effective over a narrow frequency range. In this work, helmholtz resonator is applied for reducing the combustion oscillations and we vary the helmholtz resonator volume using piston in oder to tune in the wide range of operating conditions. As the result, it is found that the dominant combustion oscillations can be reduced by optimizing the size of resonator volume. Also, from these results, we investigate feasibility of actively tuned passive control

The use of structural control devices to minimize structural response to seismic/dynamic excitations has attracted increased attention in recent years. The use of magnetorheological (MR) dampers as a control device have captured the attention of researchers in this field due to its flexibility, adaptability, easy control, and low power requirement compared to other control devices. However, little attention has been paid to the effect of configuration and number of dampers installed in a structure on responses reduction. This study assesses the control of a five-story structure using one and two MR dampers at different stories to determine the optimal damper positions and configurations based on performance indices. This paper also addresses the fail-safe current value to be applied to the MR damper at each floor in the event of feedback or control failure. The model is mathematically simulated in SIMULINK/MATLAB environment. Linear control strategies for current at 0 A, 0.5 A, 1 A, 1.5 A, 2 A, and 2.5 A are implemented for MR dampers, and the response of the structure to these control strategies for different configurations of dampers is compared with the uncontrolled structure. Based on the performance indices, it was concluded that the dampers should be positioned starting from the ground floor, then the 2nd floor followed by 1st and rest of the floors sequentially. The failsafe value of current for MR dampers located in lower floors (G+1) should be kept at a higher value compared to dampers at top floors for effective passive control of multi-story structures.

With the aim to increase blade loadings and stable operating range in highly loaded compressors, this article has been conducted to explore, through a numerical parametric study, the potential of passive control using slotted bladings in cascade configurations. The objective of this numerical investigation is to analyze the influence of location, width and slope of the slots and therefore identify the optimal configuration. The approach is based on two dimensional cascade geometry, low speed regime, steady state and turbulent RANS model. The results show the efficiency of this passive technique to delay separation and enhance aerodynamic performances of the compressor cascade. A maximum of 28.3% reduction in loss coefficient have been reached, the flow turning is increased with approximately $5^0$ and high loading over a wide range of angle of attack have been obtained for the optimized control parameter.

We consider a class of large-scale interconnected time delay systems and investigate a decentralized robust passive control problem. sufficient conditions for unforced interconnected uncertain systems with time delay to be robustly stable with extended strictly passivity is given in terms of algebraic Riccati inequality and linear matrix inequality. The decentralized robust passive control problem for norm-bounded and positive real uncertainty is shown to be converted to extended strictly positive real control problem for a modified system which contains neither time delay nor uncertainty.

The adoption of cladding panels as dissipation device is a sort of passive control "ante litteram" for residential and commercial buildings. This paper gives details on the current technology outlining the difference between buffer panels and cladding panels. The discussion of robustness and resilience of the resulting system is afforded. It is shown that the strength of such solution, originally related to economy and light weight, is mainly associated with the respect of the main robustness requisites, as well as the short time it requires for removal and replacement (resilience).

The passive control methods such as horizontal and vertical fences on the lower surface of the bluff body were applied to suppress the vortex shedding and enhance the aerodynamic stability of flow. For investigating the effects of the passive control methods, wind tunnel experiments on the unsteady flow field around a bluff body near a moving ground were performed. The boundary layer and velocity profiles were measured by the Hot Wire Anemometer (HWA) system and the vortex shedding patterns and flow structures in a wake region were visualized via the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. Also, it is a measuring on moving ground condition that the experimental values of the critical gap distances, Strouhal numbers and aerodynamic force FFT analyses. Through the experiments, we found that the momentum supply due to moving ground caused the vortex shedding at the lower critical gap distance rather than that of fixed ground. The horizontal and vertical fences increase the critical gap distance and it can suppress the vortex shedding. Consequently, the stability characteristics of the bluff body near a moving ground could be effectively enhanced by the simple passive control such as the vertical fences.

This paper presents a compensative microstepping based position control with passive nonlinear adaptive observer for permanent magnet stepper motor. Due to the resistance uncertainties, a position error exists in the steady-state, and a ripple of position error appears during operation. The compensative microstepping is proposed to remedy this problem. The nonlinear controller guarantees the desired currents. The passive nonlinear adaptive observer is designed to estimate the phase resistances and the velocity. The closed-loop stability is proven using input to state stability. Simulation results show that the position error in the steady-state is removed by the proposed method if the persistent excitation conditions are satisfied. Furthermore, the position ripple is reduced, and the Lissajou curve of the phase currents is a circle.

In this study, a simplified approach to modeling the dynamic characteristics of passive constrained layer damping treatments in finite element models is presented. The basic concept is to represent multi-layered composite structures using an equivalent single layer. The equivalent properties are obtained by using the RKU (Ross, Kerwin and Ungar) equations. Comparisons are given between results obtained by the dynamic analysis of the simple models implemented in MSC/NASTRAN and by test measurements. Surface damping treatments are applied to automotive panels as well as simple structures. Using the proposed equivalent modeling technique, higher computational efficiency for the damped composite structures has been obtained.

The passive filter is economic and efficient in suppressing harmonics but it may cause resonance problems and its performance is constantly dependent on power system impedance or working conditions of loads. This paper presents the DSP (Digital Signal Processor)-based control system, which automatically controls the passive filter in order to solve these problems. The control system can automatically control the passive filter according to working conditions of loads and measured harmonics, reactive power, power factor and so on. Experimental results in the power system using the 100HP DC motor drive are presented in order to verify the performance of the control system.

In this work, a strategy for passive vibration control of periodic structures is proposed which involves adding a periodic array of simple resonant devices for creating band gaps. It is shown that such band gaps can be generated at low frequencies as opposed to the well known Bragg scattering effects when the wavelengths have to meet the length of the elementary cell of a periodic structure. For computational purposes, the wave finite element (WFE) method is investigated, which provides a straightforward and fast numerical means for identifying band gaps through the analysis of dispersion curves. Also, the WFE method constitutes an efficient and fast numerical means for analyzing the impact of band gaps in the attenuation of the frequency response functions of periodic structures. In order to highlight the relevance of the proposed approach, numerical experiments are carried out on a 1D academic rod and a 3D aircraft fuselage-like structure.

Background: Conclusive evidence exists about associations between several life-threatening diseases and passive smoking. The objective of our study was to investigate the prevalence of passive smoking among Iranian dental students, to assess their attitudes towards tobacco control programs, and to explore the association between these two and tobacco use. Methods: In eight randomly selected dental schools, all fourth-year students were surveyed by means of a self-administered anonymous questionnaire in December 2010. The Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) questionnaire served as the data collection instrument. Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was assessed during the previous week. Chi-square test, logistic regression, and linear regression served for statistical analyses. Results: The response rate was 84% (325 students, 66% female). Exposure to ETS was reported by 74% of the participants. Men were significantly more exposed to ETS at home, and in other places than were women. Most of the students agreed on queried tobacco control policies. The lowest agreement (72%) was for banning smoking in coffee shops and teahouses. A logistic regression model showed that adjusted for gender, passive smoking at home is significantly associated with current tobacco use. A linear regression model suggested that the total score of attitudes is significantly associated with passive smoking at home, passive smoking in other places, tobacco use experience, and current tobacco use. Conclusions: The study reports high exposure to ETS among dental students, and its association with current tobacco use and attitudes towards tobacco control.
