This study explored the characteristics of engraving, engraver’s information and their activity which can be checked through the text of anthology and document made in Chosun(朝鮮) Dynasty. Woodblocks in Advanced Center for Korean Studies(韓國國學振興院) were listed in the Memory of the World in 2015, raising interest in the academic community as well as academic circles. The woodblocks contain a variety of information that can not be viewed in the literature and can only be viewed on the woodblock. So far, there were many subjects devoted to Buddhist engravers inscribed with Buddhist scriptures. In Buddhist literature, there is a written record of engravers in many literature, even though the woodblocks are not handed down. However, private publishing materials such as literature or anthology can not be checked through the literature, and can be checked through the record of woodblocks. Therefore in this study, we examine the details of each edition of the text, the angle of engraving, and the distinguishing characteristics of the woodblocks.
This study examined Parksang’s (1474∼1530) set of books as an example about correcting the printed wood-piece while publishing its own set of books in later period of Chosun dynasty. Nuljaejib was published four times based in Honam area which it was first published in 1547 in Geumsan, then Gwangsan(1694), Wanyoung(1796), and Gwangju(1843). Every assigned examiners led the publication, and especially, This study’s main topic Nuljaejib was published in 1843 in Gwangju by Heonjong ordering to Gwangju Moksa Cho Cheulyoung after it was burned in Gwangju Myungyoondang in 1841. For this study, the proofs of Nuljaejib and printed wood and the final copy were contrasted. We confirmed the corrected image of the printed wood and its procedures were confirmed according to the correcting instructions of the proofs, and organized its procedures by figuring out how it was reflected on the printed copy. 16 volumes of 6 books of the book combined with each piece of proofs of Nuljaejib is kept at Kyungbuk University Central Library, and 200 printed woods that are donated by Chungju Park family are kept in Gwangju Minicipal Folk Museum. Although fixing the error of the engraver form a state in the printing process, it was confirmed that there are a lot of corrections to be made in the process of confirming the final copy. Also, correcting the missed number of strokes occurred the most with 87%. An important thing to remember when proofreading Nuljaejib printed wood is the way of correcting abnormal letters inappropriate with the rule of writing. Abnormal letters occurred due to engraver’s lack of understanding of letters which requires second most corrections after correcting the missed number of strokes. From this, it is known that understanding the form of letter is one of the important requirements that engraver of the printed wood must have.

Since Han-gul was created in the Joseon Dynasty, Hangeul and metal types were used to create Korean old literature with various themes. The book printed with wooden type or metal type in Korean maintained the system of tangible format by re-printing the original book or re-engraving it in order to be more widely available. Through this, Hangul continued to be used. The study compiled the printed literature for the re-creation of Han-gul type and Han-gul type books in the Joseon Dynasty. We looked at the publishing patterns and the time span of the original and the reproduced edition. The results are as follows. 1. The total number of Han-gul type books surveyed was 76 kinds, of which 46 types, or 61 percent, were re-engraved at least once. The reproduced Han-gul type books is two types of first gabinja, 13 kinds of Eulhaeja, one kind of Eulyooja, six kinds of EulhaejacheGyungseoja, one kind of ByeongjinWaerunja, 11 kinds of Moosinja, nine kinds of Jeongyooja, one type of Jeonglija. 2. A re-engraved version of the first Gabinja, DoosiUnhae (1481) remains some editions published until the 18th century. This shows that it has been reproduced for more than 200 years and maintained Gabinja style. In addition, Eulhaeja books, Younghumyakchounhae, Booljungsimdaranigyeongunhae (1485) and EulhaeJachegyungseoja books have been reproduced for about 150 years. Musinja books have been reproduced for about 170 years. 3. The most frequently reproduced version is the Gyeongseounhae version of Moosinja, Jeungyooja books in the late Joseon Dynasty. This is because of the increase in the publication of books in Yeongjo and Jeongjo and the fact that the books were distributed to each province from the central region and were published on a number of occasions. Conversely, Wonjongja books, Mengjaunhae (1694) have not been reproduced. Since the book was printed in 1695 with Moosinja metal type, later the reprinted Moosinja edition was became common. The Eulhaeja Neungumgyungunhae (1461), corrected the error of Eulhaeja edition and published in 1462, was mainly used. Since then, as many temples have been published the 1462 edition that is published in Gangyungdogam, 1461 Ulhae metal type edition has not been reproduced. Nor did the Moosinja edition of Uejesanghununhae reprinted, for this book is used of royal education and unity purposes. And the metal type Moosinja Saseoyoulgokunhae (1749), was re-published once with the help of those in power. Other types of textbooks include Sinjeongsimsangsohak and Mangukyaksa were published in the late 20th century. The books were not reproduced in the wake of changes in textbooks and printing methods.

Lee, Sang-jeong (1897-1947), an independence activist from Daegu, was also a painter who worked in the art field. He went to Tokyo in his teens, studied Western painting, and then worked as an art teacher at Kyesung School. In addition, as a Western painter, he held the first private exhibition of Western paintings in Daegu, participated in a group exhibition, and established Byeokdongsa, an art research group, in order to conduct an art movement. Lee, Sang-jeong, who went into exile in China for the independence movement in 1925, joined the Chinese army and participated in the anti-Japanese struggle. In China, Lee, Sang-jeong was absorbed in seal engraving, leaving three books of seal collections. They include 『Cheongnaminbo』(1935) kept in the Wichang Library of the National Library of Korea, 『Cheonggeumsanbanginwon』(1936) owned by a private collector in Daegu, and 『Cheonggeumsanbanggeumseokgo』 also in private hands in Hong Kong, China. Lee Sang-jeong was an artist who worked as a Western painter and seal engraver in Daegu and China in the 1920s and 30s, as well as an independence activist who fought against the Japanese colonial rule by force. With this study, Lee, Sang-jeong, as an important cultural figure in Daegu in the 20th century, will be understood more meaningfully through shedding light on his presence as a Western painter and seal engraver as well as an independence activist who faced history with courage during the national crisis.

The purpose of this study is to examine the life and artistic activities of Kim Tae-seok, who, along with Oh Se-chang (吳世昌), was recognized as master of modern calligraphy and engravings. Kim Tae-seok’s family was of middle class, and he became magistrate of Pyeongchang County because he engraved the seals of Emperor Gojong and King Yeongchin while he was an official of the Ministry of the Royal Household and he participated in reproducing the royal seals after a fire at Gyeongungung Palace. Kim Tae-seok was the disciple of Kim Seok-jun (金奭準), who was a leading commoner poet of the time and a late student of Kim Jeong-hui (金正喜). The theories on poetry and calligraphy Kim Tae-seok learned from Kim Seok-jun succeeds the academic line of Kim Jeong-hui and Yi Sang-jeok (李尙迪). Kim Tae-seok acquired broad knowledge of engraving through his association with Jeong Hak-gyo (丁學敎) and Kang Jin-hui (姜璡熙), the best calligraphers and painters as well as engravers of the time. These relationships were influenced by the bridging role played by Kim Tae-seok’s teacher Kim Seok-jun, connections Kim Tae-seok cultivated during his participation in the project to engrave royal seals, and the long-standing friendship of Kim Tae-seok’s family and ancestors. Kim Tae-seok was dispatched to Japan and Qing China as art examiner in 1908, and he spent nearly 20 years in China. In particular, he displayed his abilities to the fullest when he engraved the National Seal of the Republic of China and the seal of title of its first de facto president Yuan Shikai (袁世凱) while working as an official in the Bureau of Seals of the newly created Republic of China. Meanwhile, Kim Tae-seok actively participated in the operation of Heunghwa Industrial Bank (興華實業銀行), which was established in Beijing in 1922 with the aim of realizing an armed independence movement through the farmer-soldier system (屯田兵制). The record of his participation in the independence movement in Beijing will serve to elevate his status as an artist. After returning from China, he toured Jeonju and other Jeolla provinces in the early 1930s and used calligraphy and engraving exhibitions to vigorously display his skills. The impact of his calligraphy and engraving was great enough, despite the short period in which he was active, to create a group of followers led by Choi Kyu-sang (崔圭祥) and Lee Kwang-ryul (李光烈). Kim Tae-seok formed a nationwide calligraphy organization named Daedong-hanmukhoe (大東翰墨會) after permanently returning to Korea from Japan just before Korea’s liberation. Through this organization, he played a leading role in the calligraphy world by searching for a way to unite the leftists and the rightists through exhibitions at a time when the two sides were sharply divided. In 1948, thirty years after the establishment of the provisional government of Korea, Kim Tae-seok led the project on making the first national seal of the Republic of Korea at the request of Rhee Syng-man, its first president. This became the last achievement of Kim Tae-seok’s life.
