In 1928, botanist Makoto Nishimura created the robot Gakutensoku. Far from walking, this robot was a giant 3m long robot with no other functions. However, ‘Gakutensoku’ was the first in the world to express various emotions through the eyelids, pupils, and lips. Nishimura made the skin of ‘Gakutensoku’ out of rubber, and it used air pressure as a power source to make facial expressions and gestures smooth like a human being. Nishimura’s attempt like this was to infuse the doll with a “soul as if it were a living being.” This is in line with the oriental view of life, which recognizes that life exists in all beings, including humans, along with the Karakuri dolls.

Walking method based zero moment position algorithms that can guarantee the stability of the biped walking robot while walking, but it moves the legs for the stability of the walking in a way that is not related to energy conservation. Walking method using ZMP can cause low battery efficiency and load on leg joints. The walking method using the passive walking, which is a natural and efficient method of walking, can reduce the load on the joints of the robot by using the method without using the inertia that occurs when walking and reduced control elements and efficient use of battery. In this paper, a biped robot with an actuator based on the principle of passive dynamic walker mechanism is applied to a passive walking algorithm. In order to solve the problem of stabilization of the posture during walking, the posture was stabilized by using the swing motion of the arm. and the walking movement of the robot was observed using the AHRS sensor applied to the robot .It was confirmed that the posture can be stabilized based on measured values using AHRS.

The calculation of the optimal trajectory of the stepped top-down robot was made using a genetic algorithm and a computational torque controller. First, the total energy efficiency was minimized using the Red-Cold Generic Algorithm (RCGA) consisting of reproductive, cross, and mutation. The reproducibility condition related to the position assembly of the start and end of the stride and the joints, angles, and angular velocities are linear constraints. Next, the unequal constraint accompanies the condition for preventing the collision of the swing leg at the corner with the outer surface of the stairs, the condition of the knee joint for preventing kinematic peculiarity, and the condition of no moment in safety in the traveling direction. Finally, the angular trajectory of each joint is defined by fourth-order polynomial whose coefficient is to approximate chromosomes. This is to approximate walking. In this study, the energy efficiency of the optimal trajectory was analyzed by computer simulation through a biped robot with seven degrees of freedom composed of seven links.

As research on the practical use of robots has continued since the past, advancements into each field of society are being continuously tried in modern society, breaking bounds from the previous experimental environment. However, in order for robots to be applied to the real environment, the production cost, which is considered to be the biggest disadvantage of commercializing the existing robot platform, and the adaptability issue in working environments in terms of human standards must be considered. This paper proposes a robot of biped walking form, which conforms to the degree of freedom and the size of human beings. By replacing the encoder with a combined module of potentiometer, the high cost of production is reduced, and by adopting a modular design that is easy to replace parts, the maintenance cost of robots is reduced. Finally, stability was verified by applying a walking pattern to two dummy robots of different sizes and motor arrangements. In this paper, after developing the real biped walking robots, the performance and usability were verified through walking experiments and applying the walking pattern using the developed robots.

This paper presents a new balance control scheme for a biped robot. Instead of using dynamic sensors to measure the pose of a biped robot, this paper uses only the visual information of a specific reference object in the workspace. The zero moment point (ZMP) of the biped robot can be calculated from the robot's pose, which is measured from the reference object image acquired by a CCD camera on the robot's head. For balance control of the biped robot a servo controller uses an error between the reference ZMP and the current ZMP, estimated by Kalman filter. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm has been proven by the experiments performed on both flat and uneven floors with unknown thin obstacles.

This paper is concerned with computer simulations of a biped robot walking in dynamic gaits. To this end, a three-dimensional robot is considered possessing a torso and two identical legs of a kinematically ingenious design. Specific walking patterns are off-line generated meeting stability based on the ZMP condition. Subsequently, to verify whether the robot can walk as planned, a multi-body dynamics CAE code has been applied to the corresponding joint motions determined by inverse kinematics. In this manner, complex mass effects could be accurately evaluated for the robot model. As a result, key parameters to successful gaits are identified including inherent characteristics as well. Also, joint actuator capacities are found required to carry out those gaits.

This paper mainly deals with the dynamic walking of a biped robot. At first, in order to walk in various environments, it is desirable to adapt to such ground conditions with a suitable foot motion, and maintain the stability of the robot by a smooth hip motion. A method to plan a walking pattern consisting of a foot trajectory and a hip trajectory is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by simulation results. Secondly, the paper brings forward a balance control technique based on off-line walking pattern with real-time modification. At last, the concept of Zero Moment Point (ZMP) is used to evaluate dynamic stability.

In this paper, we generate a trajectory minimized the energy gait of a biped robot for walking a staircase using genetic algorithms and apply to the computed torque controller for the stable dynamic biped locomotion. In the saggital plane, a 6 degree of freedom biped robot that model consists of seven links is used. In order to minimize the total energy efficiency, the Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) is used. Operators of genetic algorithms are composed of a reproduction, crossover and mutation. In order to approximate the walking gait, the each joint angle is defined as a 4-th order polynomial of which coefficients are chromosomes. Constraints are divided into equality and inequality. Firstly, equality constraints consist of position conditions at the end of stride period and each joint angle and angular velocity condition for periodic walking. On the other hand, inequality constraints include the knee joint conditions, the zero moment point conditions for the x-direction and the tip conditions of swing leg during the period of a stride for walking a staircase.

Many locomotion purpose robots are being built and are under research such as mobile manipulator and biped humanoid robot, etc. Dynamic posture stability of these robots is based on the ZMP point. For getting stable ZMP trajectory, some method has been developed but is too complex and time consuming which leads to inability in generating on-line ZMP trajectory. In this paper, we give a qualitative study about behavior of ZMP in biped walking robot through visualization. This result gives intuitive understanding about behavior of ZMP under various robot state.

This paper proposes a desired trajectory and a control algorithm for a biped robot with curved soles. Firstly, we derived the desired trajectory from a model called the Moving Inverted Pendulum Mode (MIPM) of which a contact point of the foot is moving in the horizontal direction. A biped robot with curved soles is under-actuated system, because it has one contact point with the ground during the single supporting phase. Therefore, to solve the under-actuated problem, we changed control variables, used modified dynamic equations and used the computed torque control. The simulation results show that a biped robot with curved soles walks stably. Also, fast walking and natural motion of a biped robot can be implemented.

This paper presents an effective and systematic trajectory generation method, together with a control method for enabling a biped robot to walk upstairs. The COG (center of gravity) trajectory is generated by the VHIPM (virtual height inverted pendulum mode) for the horizontal motion and by a 6th order polynomial for the vertical motion; an ankle compliance control (ACC) is also added into the robot control. The proposed methods are evaluated by simulations as well as being implemented in a robot for the performance verification. The results show that the proposed methods can generate stable motions when walking upstairs, and these can significantly reduce the zero moment point (ZMP) errors compared with other methods, enabling the robot to walk up steeper stairs.

This paper proposes suitable gait generation for dynamic walking of biped robot with varying load in real time. Author proposes the relationship between ZMP(Zero Moment Point) and measurement from FSR(Force Sensing Register). Simplifying this relationship, it is possible to reduce the computational time and control the biped robot in real time. If the weight of the biped robot varies in order to move some object, then joint trajectories of the the biped robot must be changed. When some object is loaded on the biped robot in it's home position, FSRs can measure the variation of weight. Evaluating the relations between varying load and stable gait of the biped robot, it can walk adaptively. This relation enables the biped robot to walk properly with varying load. The simulation is also represented in this paper which shows proposed relationships.

Generally, biped walking is difficult to control because it is a nonlinear system with various uncertainties. In this paper, we design a robust control system based on sliding-mode control (SMC) of 5-link biped robot using the wavelet neural network(WNN), in order to improve the efficiency of position tracking performance of biped locomotion. In our control system, the WNN is utilized to estimate uncertain and nonlinear system parameters, where the weights of WNN are trained by adaptive laws that are induced from the Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control system is verified by computer simulations.

This is a preliminary study is to make the robot walk more stably by observing the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) of the robot when the robot stands on one leg(single support) and then on two legs(double support) and so on. The robot consists of nine DOF (Degree of freedom) with lower part of the body. It is equipped with motor drivers and force sensors inside the robot. The motors are controlled by the external PC (Intel pentium 4). By the experimental results, it is found that the robot is unstable in the instant of changing from single support to double support or from double support to single support. We use the trajectory compensation of the angle and the length of both legs to realize more stable walking.

One of the most important functions of a biped robot is to walk naturally like human. For the human being, toe is very important joint in order to walk naturally. Thus, for a biped robot, the existence of toe joint much affects gait pattern generation and contributes to natural walking, which is similar to the human gait or faster walking like running. Since a conventional biped robot has the feet which consist of soles without toes, it seems difficult to walk naturally. For realizing the gait to be similar to human one, toes are necessary to the biped robot. In this paper, the effect of the toe joint for gait pattern generation is studied. Generally, biped walking is difficult to control because a biped robot is a nonlinear system with various uncertainties. In this paper, we propose a hybrid sliding-mode control method using a WNN uncertainty observer for stable walking of the 5-link biped robot with model uncertainties and the external disturbance. In our control system, the sliding mode control is used as main controller for the stable walking and a wavelet neural network(WNN) is used as an uncertainty observe. to estimate uncertainties of a biped robot model, and the error compensator is designed to compensate the reconstruction error of the WNN. The weights of WNN are trained by adaptation laws that are induced from the Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control system is verified through computer simulations.
