Silver stabilizing layer of coated conductor has been prepared by dip coating method using organic silver complexes containing 10 wt% silver as a starting material. Coated silver complex layer was dried in situ with hot air and converted to crystalline silver by post heat treatment in flowing oxygen atmosphere. A dense continuous silver layer with good surface coverage and proper thickness of 230 nm is obtained by multiple dip coatings and heat treatments. The film heat treated at 500oC showed good mechanical adhesion and crystallographic property. The interface resistivity between superconducting YBCO layer and silver layer prepared by dip coating was measured as 0.67 x 10-13 Ωm2. Additional protecting copper layer with the thickness of 20 ㎛ was successfully deposited by electroplating. The critical current measured with the specimen prepared by dip coating and sputtering on same quality YBCO layer showed similar value of ~140 A and proved its ability to replace sputtering method for industrial production of coated conductor.

For real power system application of SFCL, it is necessary to develop an analysis model of the SFCL. In Korea, hybrid SFCL of the first half cycle non-limiting type have been jointly developed by KEPRI and LS Industrial Systems through DAPAS program. In this study, we developed a PSCAD/EMTDC analysis model of the hybrid SFCL of the first half cycle non-limiting type. The simulation results of the developed model are in agreement with the test results of the real SFCL. The developed SFCL model is tested in real power system model.

Critical current - magnetic field (Ic-B) relation is one of the basic properties of an HTS wire, which is needed for the design of performances of superconducting devices. Experimental results of the Ic-B relation of Bi-2223 and YBCO superconducting wire are presented in this paper. n-value is also an important parameter which is needed to calculate the electric field by using the power-law. Measurement results of the n-value of the same HTS superconducting wires are also presented.

In the case of designing superconducting power apparatuses using the second generation high temperature superconducting wire, it is necessary to have a tape-splicing technique to achieve low splice resistance between coated conductor (CC) tapes. In this paper, an experimental splice method between YBCO CC tapes is proposed for a coil application. Splices were performed with a 37Pb-63Sn solder. YBCO samples were fabricated with various pressures and cooling rates. Joint resistances of the spliced samples of jointed YBCO CC tapes were measured and evaluated from V-I curves. In addition, optical micrographs were obtained to analyze the cross sectional microstructure of jointed samples.

This paper analyzed bus voltage sag caused by recloser-fuse coordination in a power distribution system with SFCL. Generally, the recloser is installed to upstream of fuse to clear against both permanent and temporary faults appropriately, when the fault happened and to block expansion of the fault area. Futhermore, when the fault occurred, bus voltage sag is caused by increased fault currents. However, in a power distribution system with SFCL, the fault current could be decreased by the effect of the impedance value of the SFCL and place to install one as long as it could improve bus voltage sag. Therefore, to analyze the effect of the improvement of bus voltage sag caused by recloser-fuse coordination in a power distribution system with SFCL, we used PSCAD/EMTDC about a permanent fault at the place behind the fuse.

A magnetic field calculation method for toroidal type winding which has circular section was developed. At first, the equation for magnetic field by single filament coil was extended using numerical integration to estimate the entire interesting region of solenoid, especially winding region itself. And then, the magnetic field by toroidal arrangement of solenoids was computed with a coordinate transformation of vector fields. The superconducting magnet with toroidal arrangement can be made up of several tens of solenoid type double pancake windings for some applications such as superconducting magnetic energy storage system(SMES). In this system, the field calculation on the high-Tc superconducting(HTS) tape itself is very important because the entire system can be reached to a fault by magnetic stress of conductor or the critical current of superconducting tape can be dramatically reduced under its self field condition. To make matters worse, 3-dimensional analysis is indispensable for this type of magnet and the most of commercial programs with finite element method can be taken too much time for analysis and design. In this paper, a magnetic field calculation method for toroidal type winding with circular section was induced.

Superconducting current leads are indispensible for reducing power loss when subjecting current into superconducting magnets. HTS(High-Tc superconducting) current leads are divided into two types; one is bulk type and the other is tape type. In this paper, conceptual design on the HTS current leads which adopts tape type for nuclear fusion magnets is carried out using magnetic field analysis and thermal analysis. When large current flows through superconducting current leads, strong self magnetic field is generated and applied to the superconducting tapes. This phenomenon leads to the critical current decrease of the superconducting tape. Therefore, we analyzed magnetic field distribution of current leads and found the proper arrangement with respect to the various HTS tapes. In addition to the magnetic field analysis, heat leak through the current leads was also calculated to know which HTS tape is superior than others in thermal aspect. To limit fault current in a power system, superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) using high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils have been developed by many research groups so far. Non-inductive winding of HTS coils used for SFCLs can be classified into solenoid winding and pancake winding. Each of winding is expected to have different quench and recovery characteristics because the structure of solenoid winding differs from pancake winding's. Therefore it is important to the SFCLs application to investigate characteristics of each winding. In this paper, we deal with quench and recovery characteristics of four kinds of windings; solenoid winding, pancake winding without spacers, and with spacers of 2 and 4 mm thickness. In order to obtain quench and recovery parameters of coils, short circuit tests were performed in liquid nitrogen.

The HTS power cable is composed of 2 layers for transmission and 1 layer for shield. The superconducting tapes of transmission layers and shield layer are wound in a cylindrical shape with a winding pitch. The radius of cylinder and the number of superconducting tapes are decided considering to the transmission current capacity and the critical current of superconducting tapes. The increasement of transmission current capacity will increase in volume of HTS cable system. In this paper, the composition method of supercondcuting power cable using the multi-cable is presented. The coated conductor tape can be wound on the smaller cylinder because it has the smaller critical bending diameter than the BSCCO tape. A small-scale cable was composed using the coated conductor tapes and a multi-cable is composed using a small-scale cable considering to transmission current capacity. Even increase of transmission current capacity, this method has advantage that the HTS superconducting power cable can be composed easily. The 22.9 kV and 154 kV supercondcutign power cable was composed using the presented method.

We already obtained magnetic behavior of superconducting Nb foil of linear type magnetic flux pump (LTMFP) by means of the FEM analysis. As well as, fundamental equations of pumping current were theoretically derived based on the pumping sequences according to the position of normal spot of the moving flux. In this paper, we experimentally investigated pumping performances of LTMFP with a wide range of traveling speed of magnetic field. In order to confirm the numerical and theoretical approaches, we explained the pumping characteristics of LTMFP by use of the calculation sequence of pumping current.

A sub-cooled liquid nitrogen system is known as a promising method to develop high voltage superconducting apparatuses such as superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) and superconducting cables. To develop a high voltage superconducting machine adopting the sub-cooled liquid nitrogen system with a constant pressure, injecting a non-condensable gas is indispensable. In this study, the dielectric characteristics of insulation gases are investigated and analyzed by using electric utilization factors (ξ). It is found that the maximum electric field at sparkover that occurs with 50 % probability, EMAX,50% exponentially decreases as the ξ increases. This means that the EMAX,50% at sparkover can be estimated with the ξ only, without any other electrical insulation test. This result is applicable to developing the gas insulated high voltage superconducting electric power apparatuses.

Recently, many researches have been carried out for a high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet which is advantageous in high critical current density and critical temperature. In HTS magnet, however, critical current is decreased by perpendicular magnetic field and persistent current is hard to maintain due to a low index value and high joint resistance compared with low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnet. In this paper, the HTS magnet using BSCCO wire was simulated through finite element method (FEM) and manufactured. we experimentally investigated operating characteristics of the compensating mode of the HTS magnet for current decay and made a comparison between persistent current mode and compensating mode. A feedback control unit was used to sustain current within specified ranges with defined upper and lower limits.

To develop the thermal analysis method for the thermal behavior of HTS power cable system, cooled with sub-cooled liquid nitrogen, new thermo dynamic model for HTS cable system is introduced. The introduced thermal model is mainly modified from the thermal circuit following to IEC60287 for underground power cable systems such as XLPE or paper wrapped insulation cables. The thermal circuits for HTS cables are similar to the forced cooled underground cable system but the major thermal parameters and the configuration is apparently different to the normal cable systems so there has been no proposals in this field of analysing method. In this paper, 154kV HTS cable system has been introduced as an aspects of thermal models and a thermal circuit is proposed for the fundamentals on the dynamic rating systems for the HTS cable system. By using the thermal circuit developed in this paper, the optimal controls on the sub-cooling system's capacity become possible and it is expected to make the efficiency of HTS cable higher than conventional static controls.

The operational temperature range of thermosiphon is generally limited from the critical point to the triple point of the working fluid to maintain two-phase state. Thermosiphon with mixed working fluid has a potential to widen the operational temperature range. In this study, the physical behavior of mixed working fluid during the transient operation of thermosiphon was analyzed with temperature-mole fraction diagram. The condenser and the evaporator temperature variations were explained by the dew line and the bubble line of the mixture. It is encouraging that the thermosiphon operation commences early with larger fraction of high boiling point component, but the temperature gap between the condenser and the evaporator due to the separation of two components has a negative effect on the efficient cool down process.
