이 연구는 줄거리 생성하기를 목적과 형식을 갖춘 장르적 실천으로 재개념화하고, 줄거리 의 장르 특성을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 줄거리는 독자의 목적, 해석, 수용자 인식, 소 통 상황에 따라 구성되는 담화적 행위이며, 이는 반복 가능한 장르로서의 특성을 지닌다. 이 연구는 줄거리 생성하기의 대표적인 목적을 ‘이해’, ‘비평’, ‘공유와 생산’의 세 가지로 유형화 하고, 각각의 내적 형식을 분석하였다. ‘이해’ 목적의 줄거리는 사건을 시간적‧인과적으로 배 열하고 객관적 설명 중심의 서술 방식을 취하는 경향을 보인다. ‘비평’ 목적의 줄거리는 해석 적 관점이 강하게 개입되며 사건의 선택과 배열이 관점을 뒷받침하도록 재구성된다. ‘공유와 생산’ 목적의 줄거리는 수용자의 관심과 공감을 고려한 서사 전략, 정서적 표현, 시점 전환, 결말 생략 등의 수사적 기법이 적극 활용된다. 이상의 결과는 줄거리 생성이 표면적 요약에 머무르지 않고, 다양한 목적과 맥락에 따라 내적 형식이 조직되는 복합적 장르임을 보여 준 다. 이 연구는 줄거리 교육의 개념적 지평을 확장하고, 현대 문식 환경에 적합한 실천적 교육 방안을 모색하는 데 이론적 토대를 제공할 것이다.

This study aims to reconceptualize the plot summary as the outcome of a genre-based practice. Rather than being a neutral or mechanical activity, constructing a plot summary is a discursive act shaped by the reader’s purpose, interpretive stance, perception of the audience, and the communicative context. It exhibits the characteristics of a repeatable and socially recognizable genre. This study classifies the primary purposes of constructing plot summaries into three types—understanding, criticism, and sharing and production—and examines the internal forms associated with each. A plot summary oriented toward understanding follows a chronological and causal sequence of events, adopting a narrative style grounded in objective explanation. In contrast, a plot summary created for critical purposes incorporates a strong interpretive perspective, with the selection and arrangement of events reconstructed to support evaluative claims. Plot summaries aimed at sharing and production actively employ narrative strategies that appeal to the recipient’s interest and empathy, including emotional expression, shifts in perspective, rhetorical techniques, and even deliberate omissions of endings, thereby functioning as independent communicative content. These findings demonstrate that the plot summary is not merely superficial or formulaic, but a complex discursive genre whose internal form is shaped by diverse purposes and social contexts.

이 연구는 줄거리 생성하기가 독자의 해석과 판단이 개입된 고차적 담화 행위라는 점에 착목하여 줄거리 개념을 재구성하고 줄거리 교육의 관행을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 이후 줄거리 연구와 교육의 시사점을 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 줄거리는 이야기의 표면 정보를 기계적으로 압축한 결과물이 아니라, 독자가 핵심 사건을 선택하고 배열한 구성적 요약물이다. 이 연구는 ‘줄거리’를 ‘서사 텍스트의 핵심적 사건을 선정․(재)배열한 구성적 요약물’로, ‘줄거리 생성하기’를 ‘수용자와의 소통을 전제로 목적과 맥락에 적합한 방식으로 서사 텍스트의 핵심적 사건을 선정․(재)배열하는 행위’로 규정하였다. 또한 줄거리의 담화적 성격과 의미 구성의 가능성에 주목하며 교육과정과 교과서를 통시적으로 분석한 결과, 줄거리 교육은 오랫동안 서사 이해의 기초로 간주되며 반복되어 왔지만 줄거리의 개념 정의나 생성 방법에 대한 체계적 탐구 없이 단편적인 활동으로 설계되어 왔음을 밝혔다. 향후 줄거리 연구 및 교육의 심화를 위해서는 줄거리 생성하기를 독립된 장르적 실천으로 조명하는 한편 줄거리 교육의 방식과 내용을 전면적으로 재검토하고 학습자의 줄거리 생성하기 양상을 시증적으로 분석하는 등 교육적 접근을 체계화할 필요가 있다.

This study aimed to reconstruct the concept of plot summaries and critically review the practice of plot summary education, thereby deriving implications for future plot summary research and education. A plot summary is not a mechanical compression of a story’s surface-level details; but a constructive summary where the reader selects and organizes core events. This study defined ‘plot summary’ as “a compositional summary that selects and (re)arranges the core events of a narrative text”. In addition, ‘creating a plot summary’ was defined as “the act of selecting and (re)arranging the core events of a narrative text in a manner appropriate to the purpose and context, with the premise of communicating with the audience”. Based on this conceptualization, the Korean language curriculum and textbooks were analyzed diachronically, focusing on the discursive nature of the plot summary and the possibility of constructing meaning. The analysis revealed that while plot summary education has long been regarded as the basis of narrative comprehension and has been repeatedly implemented, it has remained a fragmentary activity lacking systematic exploration of the concept definition of plot summary or method of creation. To advance the study and education of plot summaries in the future, it is necessary to recognize plot summary creation as an independent genre practice and thoroughly review the method and content of plot summary education.
