Not only were lanterns a tool used to light up darkness, but they were also widely used in ceremonial rites of passage and festivals. Lighting a lantern is called yeon-deung. Yeon-deung bears the symbolic significance of brightening one’s self tainted with the Three Poisons—greed, anger and ignorance. Under the symbolism, the tradition of lighting a lantern has continued. Designated as Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 122, Yeong Deung Hoe is the most renowned lantern festival with 1,300 years of history. There are today many lantern-related festivals replicating Yeon Deung Hoe as it has gained public attention. The thesis initially places its focus on the history of traditional lanterns. It comprehensively lists for the first time the types and roles of traditional lanterns from Silla Kingdom up to the period of Japanese colonization through written records. The thesis then examines the OSMU (One Source Multi Use) of traditional lanterns used in Yeon Deung Hoe through various festivals of today. Through the festivals in which a lantern the motif, the material and the medium of expressing people’s wishes, it explores how traditional lanterns are utilized. The thesis eventually suggests several ways to revitalize the traditional lantern heritage from the perspectives of royal court culture content, craft culture content, education culture content and religion culture content. In the part of royal court culture content, the thesis proposes to link the record on Buddha’s Birthday from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty with Cultural Heritage Administration’s Five Palaces Project. In the part of education culture content, it advocates a project employing the elderly in making traditional lanterns under the context of today’s aging society. In the part of craft culture content, it advises cultivating grounds for both today’s and tomorrow’s traditional lantern artists with fair treatment and due respect. In religion culture content, it emphasized the idea of making traditional lanterns during religious holidays. Every process of making traditional lanterns is a composite art in which Korean traditional cultures are comprehensively collected. The whole process in which Dakjongyi (a paper made from the bark of a paper mulberry) is used, natural dye is followed, and Korean traditional five colors are employed for coloration is not just environmental-friendly but also authentic and aesthetic in Korean way. The challenge faced today is to restore the lost “festivity” once prevalent in and among Koreans through the lantern culture.

Funeral lanterns include all kinds of hand-held lights. The characteristic that the funeral lantern can light its neighborhood while it is moving can be used most of in royal parades. “Barinbanchado”(Drawing of Starting of a funeral procession) listed in Kukjangdogameuigwe(Illustrated Book of State Funeral Protocols) shows procession of funeral biers from the royal court to the royal tomb. Because funeral procession started in early morning which was still dark, the procession looked like a splendid and festive lantern parade. In the ritual, lanterns were ritual things to show magnificence of royal family and sacredness of fire as well as to light neighborhoods. In this paper, it was studied in two ways. First, types and meaning of funeral lanterns were reviewed. Second, the number of lanterns in the procession and the places that lanterns were used were identified. Funeral lanterns used in royal family were torches, hanging lanterns and candles. By the middle of JoseonDynasty, torches were mostly used. When King proceeded outside the palace, torches were required. If they were not prepared, retainers might be reprimanded. In late Joseon, hanging lanterns and candles were used. Up to then, hanging lanterns were mainly used in Buddhism and they were produced for Yeondeunghoe(the Lantern Procession) or Palgwanhoe. A funeral procession was to show magnitude of royal family in addition to its original function as moving coffin to the royal tomb. This characteristic made funeral lanterns more necessary. For the procession from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. enormous number of funeral lanterns was needed. The procession of hundreds lanterns attracted people’s attention easily even from the distance. Sinbaekyoye and Shinyew here the body and spirit of a king were placed were ornamented with 12 three-colored candles and Daeyeo was highlighted with 40 Hwacheolchorong. To add Geohwaand Mangchok around it, you can easily imagine the procession surrounded by 1,000 lanterns. To emphasize the solemn procession, ‘light’was used. In particular, Emperor Kojong executed funeral procession of Queen Myungseong right after the proclamation of Korean Empire, which was postponed. 2,700 funeral lanterns were used to decorate Daeyeo. It is the look of Daehan Empire that Emperor Kojong tried to show to the public and the Japanese military who dreamed of establishment of independent state rather than being coerced by the Japanese imperialists. In this paper, funeral lanterns were researched through literature. Funeral lanterns can be understood as devices for restoration.
