This study aimed to understand the mechanism of fire generation caused by overload and overcurrent by conducting fire reproduction experiments in an environment similar to the actual fire scene. For this purpose, appraisal equipment was used to compare and analyze the characteristics of short circuits, changes in the sheath, and damage that occurred in the prepared samples. In particular, the focus of the research is to observe singularities that can only be caused by overloads and overcurrents, which we hope to contribute to the development of new fire investigation techniques for fire detection and sensitivity. The results of this study are expected to be used as the basis for similar research in the future, and are expected to make important contributions to fire prevention and safety management. In conclusion, this study will contribute to the improvement of fire safety by investigating the effects of overload and overcurrent on fire occurrence and developing new investigation techniques based on this.

Recently, the International Maritime Organization is strengthening regulations for ships operating in polar regions. Hence, insulated multi-core tubes as components for vessels operating in extreme cold need to be investigated in various aspects. Furthermore, the demand for research on electric propulsion vessels is also increasingly growing. Thus, to utilize a 4-core insulated multi-core tube with glass wool as insulation, which was previously developed for ships operating in polar regions, as a water-cooled electrical cable, this study conducted an experiment on the temperature change when water at normal temperature 25℃ was supplied as a coolant under the overcurrent varied from 10A to 25A. As a result, the temperature increase of the core in 10A condition was 3.3℃, but it increased to 13.05℃ in the 25A condition. This showed that a temperature difference of approximately 9.75℃ occurred according to the overcurrent load. However, the coolant inlet and outlet temperatures were relatively uniform around 1℃ in all conditions. This suggests that increasing the residence time by proper control of the coolant flow in the future could achieve a higher cooling effect.

When a fire breaks out, it is difficult to find out the causes of the fire, because combustible things around fire scene are usually burnt away. Among many causes of fires are electronic wires, this thesis deal with the destroyed sheath of electronic wires caused by fire. It was studied with the use of measurement devices focusing on the distinctions of wires and conductors. This study especially emphasized the process of deterioration, burning pattern, and composition of electronic wire conductor. It also has a phenomenological approach to the distinctive cause of fire by some partial force. The fire prevention methods have been suggested through the analysing results of fire patterns. This study is expected to be a useful material for analyzing various electrical fires.

This article is a study to identify the various causes of electric fire that could occur at the terminal stage, such as poor contact and the risk of fire due to over-current. First, the fire hazard was tested for poor contact, over-current, or single cause, and then the thermal characteristics of the tightening torque changes were tested, assuming that the two causes occurred simultaneously. The experiment showed that the thermal characteristics of the terminals were significantly more apparent when the two causes worked in combination, and that the risk was higher.

Protection system is used to protect components against fault as fast as possible and also to minimize the area around it from fault. Nowadays because of the existence of Distributed Generation in power system, a change is needed to be implemented for protection system at distribution network in order to ensure the electricity can be supplied to the consumer safely. With the presence of distributed generation (DG) units in distribution systems, the function of relay protection is generally going to be changed. In this paper the impact of installing Dis-tributed Generation in radial system on the directional over-current protection relay, in pres-ence of a Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor on fault courant is investigated. The relays coordination scheme was developed through analysis for three fault location scenarios. A realistic feeder system for a case study with its scheme protection is developed in Matlab software environment.

The installation of distributed generation (DG) in the electrical networks has numerous advantages. However, connecting and disconnecting of DGs (CADD) leads to some problems in coordination of protection devices due to the changes in the short circuit levels in the different points of network. In this paper, an adaptive method is proposed based on available setting groups (SG) of relays. Since the number of available SG is less than possible CADD states, a classifying index (CI) is defined to categorize the several states in restricted setting groups. Genetic algorithm (GA) with a suitable objective function (OF) is used as an optimization method for the classification. After grouping, a modified coordination method is applied to achieve optimal coordination for each group. The efficiency of the proposed technique is demonstrated by simulation results.

이러한 문제를 효과적이면서 경제적인 해결방법으로 FACT(Flexible AC Transmission System)기술이 주목 받고 있다. FACTS 기기 중 SVC(Static Var Compensator)는 상용운전 중이며, 기존 동기조상기에 비해 저렴하고, 신속 정확한 전압제어를 하는 장점이 있다. SVC는 TCR(Thyristor Controlled Reactor)과 TSC(Thyristor Switched Capacitor), FC(Fixed Capacitor)등 여러 종류의 구성을 가지고 있다.

This paper proposes the new adaptive protection algorithm for inverse-time overcurrent relays (OCRs) to ensure their proper operating time and protective coordination. The application of the proposed algorithm requires digital protection relays with microcontroller and memory. The operating parameters of digital OCRs are adjusted based on the available data whenever system conditions (system with distributed generation (DG)) vary. Moreover, it can reduce the calculation time required to determine the operating parameters for achieving its purpose. To verify its effectiveness, several case studies are performed in time-domain simulation. The results show that the proposed adaptive protection algorithm can keep the proper operating time and provide the protective coordination time interval with fast response.

This paper proposes the adaptive relaying of protective devices applied in the neighboring distribution feeders for reliable and efficient operations of a wind farm interconnected with distribution networks by dedicated lines. A wind farm connected to an electric power network is one of the greatest alternative energy sources. However, the wind turbine generators are influenced by abnormal grid conditions such as disturbances occurring in the neighboring distribution feeders as well as the dedicated power. Particularly, in cases of a fault happening in the neighboring distribution feeders, a wind farm might be accelerated until protective devices clear the fault. Therefore, the delayed operation time of protective devices for satisfying the coordination might overly expose the interconnected wind turbine generators to the fault and cause damage to them. This paper describes the proper delayed operation time of protective relay satisfying the coordination of the distribution networks as well as reducing damage on the interconnected wind farm. The simulation results for the Hoenggye substation model composed of five feeders and one dedicated line using PSCAD/EMTDC showed that the proper delayed time of protective devices reflecting the fault condition and the power output of the wind farm could improve the operational reliability, efficiency, and stability of the wind farm.

Accurate models of the characteristics of typical inverse-time overcurrent (OC) protective devices play an important role in the protective coordination schemes. This paper presents a novel approach to determine the OC protective device parameters. The approach is based on the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm which generates a state space model to fit the characteristics of OC protective devices. Instead of the conventional characteristic curves, the dynamic state space model gives a more exact fit of the OC protective device characteristics. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of decomposing the characteristic curve into smooth components and oscillation components. 19 characteristic curves from 13 typical and 6 non-typical OC protective devices are chosen for curve-fitting. The numbers of fitting components required are determined by the maximum absolute values of errors for the fitted equation. All fitted equations are replaced by a versatile equation for the characteristics of OC protective devices which represents the characteristic model of a novel flexible OC relay, which in turn may be applied to improve the OC coordination problems in the sub-transmission and distribution systems.

This research investigates the influences of distributed generations (DG), which are interconnected to the bus by the dedicated lines, on the overcurrent relays (OCR) of the neighboring distribution feeders and also proposes a novel method to reduce the negative effects on the feeder protection. Due to the grid connected DG, the entire short-circuit capacity of the distribution networks increases, which may raise the current of the distribution feeder during normal operations as well as fault conditions. In particular, during the switching period for loop operation, the current level of the distribution feeder can be larger than the pickup value for the fault of the feeder's OCR, thereby causing the OCR to perform a mal-operation. This paper proposes the adaptive setting algorithm for the OCR of the distribution feeders having the neighboring dedicated feeders for the DG to prevent the mal-operations of the OCR under normal conditions. The proposed method changes the pickup value of the OCR by adapting the power output of the DG monitored at the relaying point in the distribution network. We tested the proposed method with the actual distribution network model of the Hoenggye substation at the Korea Electric Power Co., which is composed of five feeders supplying the power to network loads and two dedicated feeders for the wind turbine generators. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed adaptive protection method could enhance the conventional OCR of the distribution feeders with the neighboring dedicated lines for the DG.

A safe and reliable protection system in distribution networks, specifically, those hosting distribution generation units, needs a robust over-current protection scheme. To avoid unintentional DG disconnection during fault conditions, a protection system should operate quickly and selectively. Therefore, to achieve this aim, satisfying coordination constraints are important for any protection scheme in distribution networks; these pose a challenging task in interconnected and large-scale networks. In this paper, a new coordination strategy, based on the same non-standard time-current curve for all relays, in order to find optimal coordination of directional over-current relays, is proposed. The main aim is to reduce violations, especially miscoordination between pair relays. Besides this, the overall time of operation of relays during primary and backup operations should be minimized concurrently. This work is being tackled based on genetic algorithms and motivated by the heuristic algorithm. For the numerical analysis, to show the superiority of this coordination strategy, the IEEE 30-bus test system, with a mesh structure and supplemented with distributed generation, is put under extensive simulations, and the obtained results are discussed in depth.

The coordination of directional overcurrent relay (DOCR) is employed in this work, considering gray wolf optimizer (GWO), a recently designed optimizer that employs the hunting and leadership attitude of gray wolves for searching a global optimum. In power system protection coordination problem, the objective function to be optimized is the sum of operating time of all the main relays. The coordination of directional overcurrent relays is formulated as a linear programming problem. The proposed optimization technique aims to minimize the time dial settings (TDS) of the relays. The calculation of the Time Dial Setting (TDS) setting of the relays is the core of the coordination study. In this article two case studies of IEEE 6-bus system and IEEE 30-bus system are utilized to see the efficiency of this algorithm and the results had been compared with the other algorithms available in the reference and it was observed that the proposed scheme is quite competent for dealing with such problems. From analyzing the obtained results, it has been found that the GWO approach provides the most globally optimum solution at a faster convergence speed. GWO has achieved a lot of relaxation due to its easy implementation, modesty and robustness. MATLAB computer programming has been applied to see the effectiveness of this algorithm.

This paper describes the correction of overcurrent protective relaying set value in distribution networks interconnected with wind farm by dedicated line. The wind farm composed of wind turbine generators is one of the great energy sources; however, it would be also highly possible that the current in the point of common coupling is influenced by the output power of wind farm. So, the overcurrent relay applied in distribution feeders might generate trip signal for normal operation. In order to prevent the mal-operation of overcurrent relay, it is necessary to correct the relay's setting value according to the output power of end farm. This paper presents the influence of wind farm on the overcurrent relaying set value in distribution feeders for cases of fault as well as normal operation and proposes the basic strategy for correction of overcurrent relaying set value.
