The purpose of this article is to understand the reality of Korean mode rn Buddhism through two photos. The first is a photo of what has been k nown so far as enlightenment activist Lee Dong-in. Recently, it has been confirmed that the original of this photo is a postcard published after 193 3. Existing photos left only the person part of the postcard, and the desc ription at the bottom to convey the fact that it was a postcard was delet ed. As a result, this photo remained like a portrait of a monk. Looking at Lee Dong-in's thoughts and activities, it is absolutely impossible for him t o appear as a model for postcards. By analyzing the postcards, it was det ermined in detail that the person in the photo was not Lee Dong-in, but a monk from the 1930s. The second is a photo of <Monks at Hwagye-sa Temple> taken on Febr uary 23, 1884 by American astronomer Percival Lowell. This photo was n ot included in the Chosön, the land of the morning calm written by Perci val in 1885. It remained only as a collection on his album, but recently re leased on the Lowell Observatory's website. It is presumed to be the olde st surviving photo of a monk in Korea. It was in 2019 that Korean researchers began to take an interest in Lo well's photos. Based on Percival's travelogues at Hwagye-sa Temple and t he diary of Yun Chi-ho, who traveled with him at the time of filming, it is estimated that the filming took place in the afternoon of February 23, 1884, thereby claiming that this photo is the oldest extant photo of a Kor ean monk. It is hoped that these two photos will be reviewed to correct t he previously misunderstood photos of Lee Dong-in, and help to understa nd the true face of Korean modern Buddhism through Percival's photos a nd records.

The modern Japanese picture postcard was a media to address special news, not delivered by newspaper, and “novelty” convened by modernization. E-Hagaki(picture postcard)had been cognitively fixed as a souvenir in the 1920s-30s from an intermediate state adopting the visibility of Nisikie Newspaper in the Edo period and the objectivity of newspaper in the Taisyo period, changing from black-and-white to colored pictures. However, from the early 20th century, a number of magazines for the picture postcard had been published , the picture postcard reception and exhibition had been held, and a new hobby to collect the picture postcard had emerged. A new culture of picture postcard evolved as an another archive in the Taisyo and Showa period as writers and artists actively participated in the phenomenon. It was vigorously exploited the commercial art such as the art nouveau design, the collotype picture printing, the improvement of paper quality, and typography to make the novel and extraordinary topics of daily life newsworthy and contain more address and argument. As a result, it had converged toward the unification of the consumption power of propaganda, tourism, and travel, extensive commercial film and promotion medium, and contemporary cultural resources. Furthermore, it led the differentiated visualization in the empire period. The picture postcard culture started to transformed, extending to the colonial. The beauty picture postcard as a type of the Korean geisha picture postcard and the rural folk song of Japan as a sort of the ‘Arirang’ and ‘lyric poem’ postcard in the Chosen dynasty revealed ‘discrimination’ and ‘difference’ between colony and homeland. Hinode-Shoko, the publisher of picture postcard for Chosen and Taisyo picture printing office, the subcontractor of Imperial Japanese Army, worked as a basis to make the difference between Japan and Chosen the discrimination between homeland and colony. The picture postcard produced as a promotion material for the immigration and tourism of Chosen was not a specific souvenir. It is seen that there was an effort to extend the recognition on the ‘rural’ areas of Chosen, which Japan tried to exclusively possess, to the culture of picture postcard and actualize it as a cultural device.

This article examines the Ehagaki, picture postcards, issued in commemoration of Korea-Japan Annexation. By introducing 400 postcards related to the historical event of Korea-Japan Annexation, I argue that these postcards contributed to the rationalization of annexation as a natural and inevitable process for Koreans. For this purpose, I categorize these 400 postcards into 9 types and lay out the visual patterns of rationalization. Considering that Ehagaki was a medium of mass communication in Japanese society, the circulation of postcards shows that many Japanese uncritically accepted the distorted view of Korea-Japan Annexation. This behavior continued with the issuance of various promotional Ehagaki and set the stage for forgetting the annexation’s invasiveness.
