본 연구는 오랜 기간 ‘왜색(倭色) 논쟁’과 엘리트 담론 속에서 주변부 문화로 치부되어 온 한국 트로트의 역사적 기원과 정체성을 비판적으로 검토하고, 이를 ‘한국학적’ 관점에서 재정립함으로써 향후 교육자료로 활용할 수 있는 이론적 근거를 마련하는 데 목적이 있다. 트로트는 단순히 식민지 시기의 외래 장르가 이식된 결과가 아니라, 18세기 말 천주교 성가와 유성기 도입을 통해 유입된 서구 음악 문법의 주체적 수용, 그리고 한국 전통 ‘계면조(界面調)’가 지닌 비애미의 정서가 융합되어 형성된 독자적 대중음악 양식임을 고찰하였다. 특히 본 연구는 기존의 소모적인 기원론적 공방에서 벗어나기 위해 ‘삼각 비교 모델’을 도입하고, Python을 활용한 작곡 구조의 수학적 통계 분석과 주성분분석(PCA)을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 트로트는 일본 엔카와 일정한 선율적 유사성을 공유하면서도, 한국적 가창 관습인 ‘꺾는 목’과 ‘떠는 목’을 통해 차별화된 예술적 질감을 확보하고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 레게(Reggae)와 같은 제3세계 음악의 사례와 비교할 때, 트로트 역시 민중의 생활 감정, 시대적 고통, 공동체적 위로의 정서를 담아 온 대중음악이라는 점에서 문화사적 의미를 지닌다. 결론적으로 트로트는 한국인의 100년 사적 정서를 체현한 ‘한국적 예술’로서 그 존재론적 위상이 재검토되어야 한다. 나아가 본 연구는 트로트를 단순한 오락 장르가 아니라 한국 근현대사의 감정 구조와 대중적 기억을 담아 온 문화 텍스트로 파악함으로써, 향후 한국 대중음악사 교육, 지역문화 콘텐츠 개발, 세대 간 문화소통 교육의 자료로 활용될 수 있음을 제언한다.

This study critically examines the historical origins and identity of Korean trot, which has long been marginalized by debates over Japanese influence and elite-centered discourse. From a Korean Studies perspective, it redefines trot as a distinctive form of Korean popular music rather than a mere colonial import. The study argues that trot was formed through the active reception of Western musical grammar, introduced through Catholic hymns and the gramophone, and its fusion with the sorrowful aesthetics of the traditional Korean gyemyeonjo mode. To move beyond the conventional debate over origins, this study adopts a triangular comparative model and conducts statistical analysis, including PCA, using Python. The results show that although trot shares certain melodic similarities with Japanese enka, it has developed a differentiated artistic texture through Korean vocal practices such as kkeokneun mok and tteoneun mok. In conclusion, trot should be reconsidered as a Korean art form that embodies the historical emotions and popular memory of modern Korea, and it can serve as a meaningful resource for Korean popular music education and cultural content development.
