The energy consumption modeling and the optimization solution for the traction control of high-speed trains are addressed in this paper. Based on the analysis of the operation process, an improved train traction analysis with the multi-mass modeling approach is presented, and the corresponding energy consumption model is investigated. By considering the issues of the passenger comfort and traveling time, an optimization algorithm for traction control of the high-speed trains is presented by using a multi- objective-fitness particle swarm optimization technique. Simulations are performed with practical parameters of the CRH EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) and railway line, and the results demonstrate the performance of the proposed solution over the conventional traction calculation method.

The automotive market has recently been investing much time and costs in improving existing technologies such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and TCS (Traction Control System) and developing new technologies. Additionally, various methods have been applied and developed to reduce this. Among them, the development method using the simulation has been mainly used and developed. In this paper, we have studied a method to develop SILS (Software In the Loop Simulation) for TCS which can test various environment variables under the same conditions. We modeled hardware (vehicle engine and ABS module) and software (control logic) of TCS using MATLAB/Simulink and Carsim. Simulation was performed on the climate, road surface, driving course, etc. to verify the TCS logic. By using SILS to develop TCS control logic and controller, it is possible to verify before production and reduce the development period, manpower and investment costs.

This paper presents a network-based traction control system(TCS), where several electric control units(ECUs) are connected by a controller area network(CAN) communication system. The control system consists of four ECUs: the electric throttle controller, the transmission controller, the engine controller and the traction controller. In order to validate the traction control algorithm of the network-based TCS and evaluate its performance, a Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation(HILS) environment was developed. Herein we propose a new concept of the HILS environment called the network-based HILS(Net-HILS) for the development and validation of network-based control systems which include smart sensors or actuators. In this study, we report that we have designed a network-based TCS, validated its algorithm and evaluated its performance using Net-HILS.

This paper describes a robust and fast wheel slip tracking control using a moving sliding surface technique. A traction control system (TCS) is the active safety system used to prevent the wheel slipping and thus improve acceleration performance, stability and steerability on slippery roads through the engine torque and/or brake torque control. This paper presents a wheel slip control for TCS through the engine torque control. The proposed controller can track a reference input wheel slip in a predetermined time. The design strategy investigated is based on a moving sliding surface that only contains the error between the reference input wheel slip and the actual wheel slip. The used moving sliding mode was originally designed to ensure that the states remain on a sliding surface, thereby achieving robustness and eliminating chattering. The improved robustness in driving is important due to changes, such as from dry road to wet road or vice versa which always happen in working conditions. Simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed moving sliding mode controller.

Two major roles of the traction control system (TCS) are to guarantee the acceleration performance and directional stability even in extreme road conditions, under which average drivers may not control the car properly. Commercial TCSs use experiential methods such as lookup table and gain-scheduling to achieve proper performance under various road and vehicle conditions. This paper proposes a new slip controller which uses the brake and the throttle actuator simultaneously. To avoid measurement problems and to get a simple structure, the brake controller and the throttle controller are designed using Lyapunov redesign method and multiple sliding mode control respectively. Through the hybrid use of brake and throttle controllers, the vehicle is insensitive to the variation of the vehicle mass, brake gain and road condition and can achieve the required acceleration performance. The proposed method is validated with simulations based on 15 DOF passenger car model.

The dynamic model and displacement control of piezoelectric actuators, which are commercially available materials for managing extremely small displacements in the range of sub-nanometers, are presented. Piezoceramics have electromechanical characteristics that transduce energy between the electrical and mechanical domains. However, they have hysteresis between the input voltage and output displacement, and this behavior is very demanding and complicated. In this paper, we propose a method of designing the control algorithm, and present the dynamic modeling equations that represent the hysteretic behavior between input voltage and output displacement. For this process, the piezoelectric actuator is treated as a second-order linear dynamic system and system constants are determined by the system identification method. Also, a classical PID controller is designed and used to regulate the output displacement of the actuator. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, numerical simulation results are presented.

This paper introduces a permanent magnet synchronous motor maximum torque control method for the wide speed range of a traction control system. This method tracks the maximum torque per ampere operating point and generates a d-axis current command according to the injection of a high-frequency angle signal to the current. This method is parameter independent when looking for the maximum torque per ampere operating point. By not injecting any real signal to a permanent magnet synchronous motor, this method does not increase the amount of copper and iron losses resulting from real signal injection. To obtain a maximum torque output in a wide speed range, this method considers the maximum amplitude limits of voltage and current when the traction motor runs in a flux weakening control field. This method is also robust to current and voltage harmonics, speed mutations, and torque disturbances. Experiment and analysis are conducted on a permanent magnet synchronous motor traction control system prototype under various operating conditions to verify the effectiveness of this method.

A bidirectional-friendly control strategy of three-phase NPC rectifier under unbalanced voltage for advanced traction power supply system (ATPSS) is proposed in this study. Negative-sequence current and DC voltage ripple are restrained effectively with very low total harmonic distortions (THDs) on the basis of predictive current control theory. First, power balance equation containing only positive-sequence voltage of the three-phase grid voltage is derived, and the secondary fluctuation of instantaneous active and reactive powers on the grid side is analyzed and calculated. Second, expression of the DC-side voltage fluctuation is deduced to fix the calculation of Pref for the optimization of the control system. Third, command current that can achieve bidirectional-friendly control is calculated according to the power expression and the reference voltage value is obtained on the basis of the predictive current control principle. Finally, simulations and experimental results verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

This paper proposes a simple current control method without a grid voltage sensor for a rectifier of traction solid-state transformer. The proposed control scheme estimates the phase angle of grid voltage from the fundamental frequency current of the grid. The extracted phase signal is normalized to generate a sinusoidal current reference by adopting a scaling factor to achieve a unity gain. Since the proposed control method operates without the grid voltage sensor for power factor correction (PFC), it offers a cost-effective solution with a simple implementation structure. However, this method cannot guarantee its control performance under weak grid conditions, where the frequency of grid voltage often varies. Thus, the control parameters of the proposed method are discussed and analyzed to minimize performance degradation. To verify the feasibility of the proposed control method, simulations and experiments are carried out on a 2 kW single-phase PFC converter. The proposed method provides as much control performance as the conventional method, which uses the grid voltage sensor.

The application of a sliding mode control for improving the dynamic response of an induction motor based speed control system is presented in this paper and provides attractive features, such as fast response, good transient performance, and insensitivity to variations in plant parameters and external disturbance. However, chattering is a difficult problem for which the sliding mode control is a popular solution. This paper presents a new fuzzy-sliding mode controller for a sensorless vector-controlled induction motor servo system to practically eliminate the chattering problem for traction applications. A DSP based implementation of the speed control system is employed. Experimental results are presented using a propulsion system simulator. The performance of the drive is shown to be practically free from chattering.

Cascaded H-Bridge rectifier (CHBR) is a more attractive solution in traction application for its transformerless structure. Because of the currents of different cells are exactly the same one, it is a challenge job to regulate the voltages of cells with only one current controller. In this paper, a PI-based control scheme is presented to deal with the voltages balance issue in CHBR. To satisfy the demand of rectifier such as unity power factor and regulated output DC voltages, the proposed control scheme consists of two parts. One is for shaping the grid current waveform and regulating the sum of DC-link voltages of all the cells; the other one is for balancing DC-link voltages. The latter is more concerned in this paper and is discussed in detail especially. Simulations and experiments are carried on. The results verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper introduces the design and control method of braking chopper circuit which can supply input power to ventilation inverter of traction control system. The DC input voltage from auxiliary block (static inverter) is normally used as an input of ventilation inverter. It converts DC input to AC output voltage to drive cooling fans for traction control system and traction motors. The electrical braking force is very important for high speed train to guarantee safety even though the train is running in the dead section where the pantograph voltage is not supplied. When the high speed train decelerate speed in dead section, the regenerative energy is dissipated by braking resistor. This paper proposed the braking chopper control method to implement rheostatic braking function and the appropriate chopper circuit for supplying voltage source to ventilation inverter during rheostatic braking mode. The proposed chopper circuit makes it possible for traction control system to regenerate power continuously regardless of the existence of pantograph voltage. The feasibility of proposed braking chopper control and circuit were proven by inertia load test and actual train field test.

The dynamics of the vehicle system has highly nonlinear components such as an engine, a torque converter and variable road condition. This thesis proposes a Fuzzy Logic Algorithm that shows better control performance than Antiwindup PI in the highly nonlinear vehicle system. Traction Control System(TCS), which adjusts throttle valve opening by Fuzzy Logic Algorithm improves vehicle drivability, steerability and stability when vehicle is starting and cornering. When a throttle valve is opened at large degree, Fuzzy Logic Algorithm shows better performances like a small settling time and a small oscillation than Antiwindup PI in simulation. The decreased desired slip ratio improves steerability in the simulation when a vehicle is cornering. The Fuzzy Logic Algorithm has been tested by a 1/5-scale vehicle for tracking the constant desired velocity.
