This study examines the “Fuchu” (祓除) text included in the Peking University Qin Bamboo Manuscripts to clarify the structure of its ritual performances and the methods used to avert calamity. It focuses on the ritual targets, practitioners, methods, and media recorded in the text. Rather than proposing new readings of difficult passages or reconstructing a specific ritual system, the study draws on the published transcription and existing annotations to examine the contextual function of individual passages and analyze how various negative conditions affecting an individual are defined as targets of fuchu and subsequently addressed through ritual means. The first section of the text describes bu yi (不宜, “unsuitability”) and bu li (不利, “disadvantage”) in a wide range of life activities, including residence, household formation, production, descendants, movement, and the acquisition of wealth. Divination performed by the lingwu (靈巫) determines that these conditions require ritual intervention. After fasting, purifying himself, and putting on clean clothing, the lingwu performs fuchu for the individual, and the section concludes with a declaration that all the spirits have granted their approval. The second section traces a life course from infancy to old age and identifies dangers encountered during childhood and adulthood, along with unstable conditions subsequently manifested in the hun and po souls and in behavior, as targets of fuchu. Shangdi Qiaozi (上帝 喬子) then transmits to the gongzhu (工祝) a specific method combining fire, spatial settings, sunlight, and rain, which is applied to a particular individual. The third section describes the appearance, behavior, and sensory abilities of a purified rooster before designating it as the yiji (義雞). Using this ritual medium, the practitioner removes faults, calamities, and inauspicious influences; expels harmful forces, and addresses illness. Subsequent harm is then blocked, and the individual receives the blessing of the yiji. The three sections differ in their ritual targets, practitioners, and media, and each has its own conclusion. They should therefore not be regarded as a single fixed procedure to be performed sequentially. Nevertheless, they share a common logic: negative conditions affecting an individual’s life, body, hun and po souls, and behavior are defined as targets of fuchu; these conditions are addressed through divination and purification, the transmission of ritual methods, material media, spatial settings, and natural forces; and the process concludes either with the approval of the spirits or with the reception of a blessing. The “Fuchu” text thus provides important evidence for the textual form and performative logic of Qin-period fuchu rituals, in which diverse negative conditions were identified and treated through different ritual methods and media.

Jeoseung Honsagut is a ritual performed to compensate for or resolve the deficiency caused by an unmarried death. Spirit marriage may be understood as a ritual form that is at once deeply human and fundamentally unreal. In this rite, the deceased are treated as if they were living and are made to undergo a wedding ceremony, resulting in a structure and procedure that are multilayered in nature. Accordingly, it is necessary to examine how this ritual is structured and how it is performed. This study is based on a close analysis of field data collected by the author in the late 1990s. These materials contain elements that are rarely observed today and possess considerable academic value due to their richness of interpretable information and overall completeness. At the same time, given the particularity of honsagut materials and the challenges inherent in their interpretation, the methodological approach and analytical framework of this study have been reconsidered. Rather than treating each dataset as a fixed text representing a specific region or genre, this study adopts a contextual and comparative approach, incorporating informants’ explanations alongside cross-references to related materials. As relatively little research has been conducted on Jeoseung Honsagut, its distinctive features in relation to other ritual forms have not yet been sufficiently clarified. One of its most salient characteristics is the incorporation of a wedding ceremony within the structure of ssitgimgut. It is therefore necessary to examine where the wedding is positioned within the ritual sequence and how it is performed. Such an analysis allows for a clearer understanding of the distinctive performative aspects of honsagut. In addition, since a heosaebi (ritual effigy) appears as an essential element, attention must be given to how it is represented both ritually and theatrically. In particular, this study focuses on the fact that the wedding is not merely a reenactment but constitutes a central process of meaning-making that enables the ritual transformation of the deceased’s identity. It analyzes the specific modes of wedding performance employing the heosaebi, including the enactment of formal procedures such as jeonanrye (formal presentation), gyobaerye (mutual bowing), hapgeunrye (sharing of ritual drinks), and pyebaek (post-wedding offering). Furthermore, it examines how the final stage of conjugal union symbolically functions as a decisive moment that transforms the ontological status of the deceased. Through this analysis, the study elucidates how the invisible union of spirits is rendered visible and how this process generates a sense of ritual reality for participants, thereby clarifying its broader significance.

The purpose of the study was to examine counter-ritual features of Byulshin-Gut and disclosed that such opposition made ritual transmission of a new community possible by meeting with festival performance structure. The opposition in Byulshin-Gut doesn’t mean only opposition to political power. It is also opposition to norms, system and poverty. It leads community in daily life restricted to distinction between the sexes, to position and etiquette and to honor and poverty to non-daily festival. Counter-ritual attributes of Byulshin-Gut can be arranged as follows. First, through magnification of scale, it makes it possible to unity the subjugated class. As we can see through that it was crowded with bystanders, it magnified and reproduced authority and press of the subjugated class by attracting a lot of voluntary participants with organizational participants. The subjugated class performed an exorcism since the power of the subjugated class was growing up partially. Second, as a form of positive opposition, they criticized and satirized the ruling powers. Its form belonged to the ruling powers, but its contents belonged to the subjugated class. They made a Gut by accepting ‘ritual’ under pressure of the ruling powers and putting their contents. They also filled up their contents by borrowing norms and language from the ruling class in diverse performances as a major content of Gut. Such results of counter-ritual appear to be a reform of community. It is a new-organized community, not the former community. Of course, in the position of the subjugated class, daily life returned again is not glad unconditionally. However, daily life at this time is not the same as the former one. Namely, through Byulshin-Gut, they are reformed to be an existence to dream order of their village where they were an owner and communitas of ritual revolt in daily life.

The purpose of this study is to examine how Victor Turner’s theory of Social Drama (Breach, Crisis, Redressive Action, and Reintegration) is ritualistically performed and visualized within the narrative and mise-en-scene of the Netflix original animation K-Pop Demon Hunters, with a specific focus on its performance scenes. To achieve this, the study established three research questions: first, the correspondence between the performance scenes and the Social Drama theory; second, the analysis of mise-en-scene visualizing the transitions between phases; and third, the derivation of markers regarding the protagonist Lumi’s identity transformation and reintegration. Methodologically, this study qualitatively compared and analyzed the ritual performativity of Gut (Korean shamanistic ritual) and the performance narrative based on mise-en-scene analysis. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the performance sequences correspond precisely to the structure of Social Drama (Breach-Crisis-Redressive Action-Reintegration), with the “Crisis” phase specifically highlighting the ambivalence of negative communitas. Second, visual elements such as the red lighting and low-angle shots in the track “Take Down” visualize the crisis, whereas golden/blue auras and white costumes symbolize healing and the restoration of order. Third, Lumi is reborn by integrating her humanity and demonic nature, achieving a communal reintegration that reconstructs the social order alongside the fandom. These findings suggest that K-Pop Demon Hunters transforms the processes of social conflict resolution and identity acceptance into a ritualistic healing narrative through the format of K-Pop performances. Ultimately, this study proposes an integrated analytical framework combining Social Drama, Gut, and mise-en-scene, while suggesting future research possibilities regarding audience performativity and comparative studies with other genres.
