한국에서 베스트셀러가 된 일본문학 안에 무엇이 담겨 있는지, 또 그것을 어떻게 읽었는 지 파악하는 작업은 번역의 의미와 더불어 받아들이는 한국의 사회상을 재평가하는 일이다. 본고는 『오싱』 붐을 통해 1980년대 한국 사회에 내재된 사회적 담론과 개인적 욕망이 무엇이 었는지 검토하고자 한다. 『오싱』 한국어판이 출간된 해는 1984년으로, 일본 텔레비전 드라마 시나리오를 소설로 ‘번역’하는 이례적인 출판이었다. 그로부터 몇 년 동안 『오싱』은 한국 독서시장의 베스트셀러 로 자리 잡았다. 『오싱』에는 한국 사회가 추구하는 욕망과의 접점이 가득했다. 더부살이 소녀 에서 대형슈퍼마켓 체인점의 사장이 된 인생 성공담은 여성의 사회 진출이라는 젠더적 요소 와, 가난을 극복하고 부(富)를 획득하는 자본적 요소의 결합이었다. 또한 1980년대 한국 사회 가 추구하는 변화 욕구를 담아낸 절묘한 조합이기도 했다. 가부장제에 순응하고 저항하는 오싱의 모습은 한국 사회 여성의 현실과 많은 점에서 닮아 있었다. 여성에 대한 차별, 노동 환 경의 그늘, 부의 추구와 경영 윤리 등 한국 사회가 안고 있는 수많은 담론을 이끌어냈다는 점에서 『오싱』은 한국 사회의 자화상과 같았다.

Understanding what is in Japanese literature that has become a bestseller in Korea and how it has been read is reevaluating the aspects of Korean society that accepts the literature in addition to the significance of translation. This study would examine the social discourses and individuals’ desires implied in Korean society in the 1980s through the Oshin boom. The year when the Korean version of Oshin was published is 1984, which was an extraordinary publication that ‘translated’ the Japanese TV drama scenario into a novel. For a few years since then, Oshin has been settled as a bestseller in the Korean book market. Oshin was full of points of contact with desires pursued by Korean society. The life success story, in which a domestic help became the owner of a supermarket chain store was a combination of the gender element of women's entry into society with the capital element of overcoming poverty and acquiring wealth. In addition, it was also an excellent combination to express a desire for change in Korean society in the 1980s. Oshin, who adapts herself and resists patriarchy, resembled the reality of women in Korean society much. In that Oshin drew out numerous discourses of Korean society, such as discrimination of women, the shadow of labor environment, and pursuit of wealth and management ethics, it was like a self-portrait of Korean society.

In order to understand the molecular interactions that occur between rice and the rice blast fungus during infection, we previously identified a number of rice blast fungal elicitor-responsive genes from rice (Oryza sativa cv. Milyang 117). Here, we report the cloning and characterization of the rice fungal elicitor-inducible gene Oshin1 (GenBank Accession Number AF039532). Sequence analysis revealed that the Oshin1 cDNA is 1067 bp long and contains an open reading frame encoding 205 amino acid residues. The Oshin1 gene shows considerable sequence similarity to the tobacco hin1 and hin2 genes. The predicted Oshin1 protein has a cysteine-rich domain at the N-terminus and is rich in leucine, serine, and alanine residues. Southern blot analysis suggests that Oshin1 gene is a member of a small gene family in the rice genome. To examine the expression of Oshin1, Northern blot analysis was conducted. Expression of the Oshin1 transcript is rapidly induced in suspension-cultured rice cells treated with fungal elicitor, salicylic acid or hydrogen peroxide. In addition, Oshin1 transcript levels are rapidly increased by treatment with $Ca^{2+}$/A23187. The expression of Oshin1 was also elevated in 3-week old leaf tissues upon ethephon application or fungal elicitor treatment. Our results suggest that the Oshin1 gene is involved in plant defense responses to environmental stresses.
