본 사례에서는 光 저장장치(optical storage) 산업에서 LG전자가 어떻게 선발 기업을 추격하고 선두자리를 차지할 수 있었는지 그 요인들을 살펴보았다. LG전자는 특허 기술, 핵심 부품, 연구개발 인력, 거래선 기반 등이 절대적으로 취약한 상황에서 사업을 시작하여 CD 시대는 물론 DVD 시대에도 성공적으로 선발기업들을 추격하였고, 결과적으로 세계 1위의 자리를 차지할 수 있었다. 특히 DVD 시대에는 일본 히타치와의 합작 사업을 통해 조기에 기술을 확보하였고, 이를 바탕으로 다양한 포맷을 함께 사용할 수 있는 신제품을 조기 출시함으로써 사업의 주도권을 확보할 수 있었다. 하지만 본격 시작된 블루레이 디스크 시장에서 LG전자는 아직 선두업체가 아니었으며, 새로운 도전이 기다리고 있었다.
The purpose of this case is to analyze the strategy for LG electronics, as latecomer to catch-up first movers in optical storage industry. In the lack of patents, core components, R&D talents and contracts with PC makers, LG electronics started the optical disc drive business, catched up innovators and finally took the leading position in CD and DVD era. Especially in DVD era, LG electronics could absorb the core DVD technology earlier through joint venture with Hitachi. LG electronics took an industry leadership by rapid introduction of new product, so called Super-Multi combined various DVD formats. But LG electronics was not the leading company in Blu-Ray Disk era and faced new challenges.

In designing the tracking system of an optical disc drive, it is first necessary to eliminate the undesired influence of any visible mechanical vibrations. In this paper a geometrical method to analyze the frequency response of an elastically supported planar rigid body has been presented. Using the theory of screw, a geometrical expression of a compliant transfer function which describes the effects of the locations of an applied force and observation on the response has been derived. Applying the substructure synthesis method, a technique to stabilize the tracking mechanical system has been presented with a numerical example.

Small form factor optical pickup (SFFOP) corresponding to BD specifications is strongly proposed for the next-generation portable storage device. In order to generate SFFOP, small sized optical pickup has been fabricated. We have developed a small sited optical pickup that is called the integrated optical pickup (IOP). The fabrication method of this system is mainly dependant on the use of the wafer based micro fabrication technology, which has been used in MEMS process such as photolithography, reactive ion etching, wafer bonding, and packaging process. This approach has the merits for mass production and high assembling accuracy. In this study, to generate the small sized optical pickup for high recording capacity, IOP corresponding to BD specifications has been designed and developed, including three main parts, 1) design, fabrication and evaluation of objective lens unit, 2) design and fabrication of IOP and 3) evaluation process of FES and TES.

In this paper, we investigated the disc warping in high-speed slim-type optical disc drive. Recently, the information storage devices are increasing track density and higher rotation speed to enhance their recording capacity and their data transfer rate. Generally, ODD used in the Lap-top Computer has small inner space. So, the flow instability of inner space is rapidly increased as its higher rotation speed. An extreme case, the flow instability causes the malfunction of readout at pick-up of drives. The experiments and numerical analysis were carried out for several cases, the result shows the influence of airflow to the disc warping.

Sound quality is becoming a major concern in optical disc drives (ODD). In order to improve the sound quality of slim type ODDs, we changed lead screw pitch and firmware algorithm in the seek mode. To evaluate the sound quality, the PCM (Paired Comparison Method) was adopted and the result was compared with the time-averaged loudness spectrum. Sound signals were also recorded and modified by increasing or decreasing selected frequency bands to verify their sensitivities to the sound quality. As a result of jury test, preferred frequency bands are associated with the time-averaged loudness spectrum.

A dynamic vibration absorber(DVA) is developed to reduce the excessive focusing vibration of an optical disc drive(ODD) originated from the resonance of an wobble disc. We design the material properties of the DVA by FEM model such as Young's modules, damping coefficient, shapes and dimensions, analyze its dynamic characteristics and provide its design guide line for suppressing the vibration of an optical disc drive. To examine the performance. of the DVA, the vibration of the wobble disc and the feeding system is measured by using a laser vibrometer and the noise level is checked by using microphone. The result shows that the proposed DVA reduces the vibration and. the noise in an optical disc drive.

For high density optical storage, there should be a high NA objective lens and a shorter wavelength laser diode. To secure the disc tilt margin related to the coma aberration, moreover, it's difficult to apply the tilt compensation mechanism into the portable PC. In this paper, we proposed the 3-axis asymmetry pickup actuator with high efficiency symmetric magnetic circuit, which consisted of the top cover type inner yoke for high magnetic flux density, the coil stack unit for the 3-axis independent operation and vertically polarized magnets. This newly suggested actuator features DVD-RAM recording, we achieved the high focus & track AC sensitivity and the greatly stabilized system.

The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive. Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in the personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity components and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The results show that the front holes reduce now-induced noise and the position of pickup body affects flow near the window. In addition, il is possible for cooling of heat sources in an optical disc drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray.

As the demand for slim laptops requires ion'-height optical disc drives, vibration problems of optical disc drives are of great concern. Additionally, with the decrease of a track width and a depth of focus in high density drives, studies on vibration resonance between mechanical parts become more important. From the vibration point of view, the performance of optical disc drives is closely related with the relative displacement between a disc and an objective lens which is controlled by servo mechanism. In other words, to read and write data properly, the relative displacement between an optical disc and an objective lens should be within a certain limit. The relative displacement is dependent on not only an anti-vibration mechanism design but also servo control capability. Good servo controls can make compensation for poor mechanisms, and vice versa. In a usual development process, robustness of the anti-vibration mechanism is always verified with the servo control of an objective lens. Engineers partially modify servo gain margin in case of a data reading error. This modification cannot correct the data reading error occasionally and the mechanism should be redesigned more robustly. Therefore it is necessary to verify a mechanism with respect to the possible servo gain plot. In this study we propose the experimental verification method far anti-vibration mechanism with respect to the existing servo gain plot. This method verifies axial vibration characteristics of optical disc drives on the basis of transmissibility. Using this method, we verified our mechanism and modified the mechanism for better anti-vibration characteristics.

A flow field around a disc in an optical disc drive is invested using numerical methods. The high-speed rotating disc induces a strong flow field around the disc, which causes the pressure distribution on the surfaces of the disc. The pressure difference between the upper and the lower surfaces causes the deformation of the disc. In the first part of this study, flow fields around a rotating disc and a stationary wall are investigated using a similarity solution method, in order to identify the effect of the distance between the disc and the wall on the pressure distribution on the surfaces of the disc. In the second part, flow field in a slim-type optical disc drive is studied using a commercial code in order to consider the effect of the vortices generated by the local geometry of the drive.

광 디스크 드라이브에서의 서보 제어시스템에는 광 픽업에서 발생된 레이저 빔을 디스크 기록면의 데이터 트랙에 정확히 위치시키기 위한 제어 계를 갖고 있다. 광 디스크의 고배속화에 따른 외란의 주파수 대역의 증가에 따라 더욱 더 높은 샘플링 주파수로 레이저 빔의 위치 제어를 필요로 하게 되고, 여러 가지 알고리즘의 증가로 인해 DSP의 연산 부담은 증가하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 서보 제어에 필요한 알고리즘의 최적화된 하드웨어/소프트웨어 시스템을 구현하고 이를 이용한 실험 결과를 제시한다.

This paper presents the geometrical methodology to decouple the vibration modes of an elastically supported single rigid body in three-dimensional space. It is shown that the vibration modes can be decoupled by placing the center of elasticity at suitable locations and thereby yielding the plane(s) of symmetry for the given stiffness matrix. The developed methodology has been applied to the actuator supported by the 4-wire suspensions in optical discs, which has one plane of symmetry. For this numerical example, the axes of vibrations have been computed and illustrated with the natural frequencies. The forced response at the objective lens is represented and its geometrical interpretation has been explained as the mutual moment between the axis of vibration and the applied wrench times the line coordinates of the axis of vibration.
