Plastic, one of the most influential hyperobjects of the 21st century, and the human body are exposed to each other. Cho Si-hyun's literature forms a worldview of a dystopian future centered on the human body, which undergoes physical and chemical changes due to exposure to plastic. In Cho Si-hyun's novels, “pla-humans,” with plastic flowing through their veins instead of blood, and their transitional forms, transformed trans-bodily bodies, appear. These bodies belong to the time of the “slow extinction” that has already arrived, questioning the boundaries of the body and the ethical future of (non)humans as post-humans. The bodies in Cho’s works that demonstrate trans-corporeal performance jump into the earth and become entangled with nature, jump into the digital world and confirm the physicality of the informatized body, and jump into space and open up the possibility of cosmic post-humanism. In this way, Cho Si-hyun's novels expand and deconstruct the boundaries of the body that are already exposed, despite the persistence of 20th-century desires. And without forgetting that “every moment in which we can speak and imagine the future is an opportunity” in a world that is already dying, they awaken the ethical role of dystopian imagination, which endlessly pursues the ethics of contact in the midst of destruction and imagines a world possible after it.

This article read the Odradek in Franz Kafka’s “The care of a Family man” as a metaphor for the ecological crisis that reached the threshold of the Anthropocene. Odradek is an allegory that requires as many interpretations as the beings in Kafka’s works. This article presupposes the Covid19 as an nonhuman object that repositions our entire lives and world horizons. These premises lead to new illumination of nonhuman beings such as Odradek. We also request critical intervention in the practice of placing human subject actors at the center of text interpretation. This article newly interpreted Odradek by referring to object-oriented ontology, new materialism, and dark ecology, which can be called nonhuman turn. The Covid19 pandemic is a sign of the end of the world. But that doesn’t mean apocalypticism, pandemic and climate change brings extinction to humans and ecosystems. The end of the world means that the meaning of the world we live in and understand has become useless. The object-oriented criticism that this article advocates explores the meaning of this end of the world.

In this paper, I explore a basic question: what does Timothy Morton’s theory of the hyperobject have to teach us about PM2.5? Understanding PM2.5 as a hyperobject, both in terms of its nonlocality and viscosity, can help us think about what it means to be ecologically aware and about the relationship between such awareness and social and environmental change. I argue that seeing fine dust as a hyperobject means that it must be understood as part of the much larger planetary crisis of global warming. Too often, air pollution and the warming of the Earth’s atmosphere are kept separate, not understood as two interrelated parts of the same problem. In his most recent book, Being Ecological, Morton writes, “Ecological awareness gives you a world in which everything is relevant to everything else, but is also really unique and vivid and distinct at the very same time” (43).

The protagonist of Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men, Sheriff Bell, says or thinks “I dont know” or some variation of it around sixty times, a striking fact that has been largely overlooked in McCarthy scholarship. This study attempts to illuminate Bell’s refrain of “I don’t know” by analyzing the drug plague in the novel as what Timothy Morton’s object-oriented ontology calls a “hyperobject.” Reading the drug scourge as hyperobject and the villain Anton Chigurh as its avatar allows us to gain insight into the patterns of hypocrisy, weakness, and lameness in the novel’s characters.

This paper examines both what future generations are to be unfairly deprived of due to environmental destruction and climate crisis by studying the dialogue between the man and his son and their journey in The Road. It explores, furthermore, why it is still not easy to reach an agreement on climate crisis response measures, regulations, or legislation in spite of mounting research papers and data from scientists and professional researchers on currently accelerating climate crisis. Climate crisis is a global phenomenon, but if we look into it more closely, we can find that underdeveloped countries are more vulnerable than developed countries, colored people such as African Americans rather than white people, non-human nature rather than humans, and future generations rather than previous generations. In this sense, climate change responses that do not consider climate justice are far from fundamental countermeasures to this serious issue. Based on the perception of climate change as a hyperobject, when we understand the connection between seemingly disparate elements, we can expect an agreement for measures to deal with climate injustices on the part of future generations.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the climate change have been warning that the deconstruction of anthropocentrism has to be not only an epistemological turn but also our political act. These crises let us know that humans are not alone on the planet but entangled with other beings in their sympoietic lives. This pandemic is pointing to a necessity to see life and living through the perspective of things. This article calls such a turn to things philosophy of object, exploring hyperobject in Timothy Morton, actor-network in Bruno Latour, and symbiosis in Graham Harman. It is to know what object means for this age.

In the age of climate crisis, the fulfillment of ecological and social justice is co-related and should be pursued together. To this end, this paper researches postcolonial ecocriticism and hyperobject theory, two approaches which have recently emerged in the sphere of ecological thinking. The former provides us an alternative discourse for both traditional ecological thought which has ignored a critique against the oppressive structure of (neo) colonialism and postcolonialism which reveals anthropocentric limits. The latter helps us understand natural and social phenomena related to the climate crisis when we apply hyperobject theory. This is impossible to be perceived within the limit of human perception, but exists everywhere and is related to global warming. These new ecological thoughts ask us to modify pre-established methods and terms of ecological theology. The following are typical applications. Theologians needs to newly consider a history of the effect of (neo) colonialism as one of the main causes for sufferings of both humans and fellow creatures, and to reconstruct an ecological theology which assumes non-human creatures as active, free, and independent beings/objects.
