아일랜드 문학사에서 가장 영향력 있는 작가들로 손꼽히는 와일드와 예 이츠는 인생에 있어서는 공통점이 많지는 않으나 『살로메』나 『그림자 드리워진 바다』에서 나타나듯 사랑의 철학에 대해서는 많은 공통점이 있다. 주인공들의 사랑에 대한 태도는 자신감 있고 위압적인 전형적인 또는 전통적 “남성적” 행동양상으로 나타난다. 예이츠의 극에서 포겔의 태도는 마법에 의존할 수 있기 때문에 부드러운 양상으로 나 타나는 반면 와일드의 극에서 살로메는 마법에 의존할 수 없기 때문에 사랑에 빠진 사람이 생각해낼 수 있는 가장 잔인하고 기괴한 방식으로 나타난다. 본 논문은 두 작 가의 작품들 『살로메』와 『그림자 드리워진 바다』에서 사랑을 표현하는 데 있어서 미 학적 접근이 어떻게 유사하게 나타나는지 알아본다.

Wilde and Yeats, as two most influential dramatists of Modern Irish literature, share not too many things in life, except that they may share a great deal in their philosophy of love, as shown in their works, Salome and The Shadowy Waters. The major characters in both plays show a typical or traditional sense of male behaviorism involving self assured, domineering attitude toward love. In Yeats’s play, Forgael’s attitude is softened as he can resort to magic; in the meantime, in Wilde’s play, the heroine Salome cannot do so, which results in the most brutal and grotesque way a person who is in love can think of. This paper will demonstrate the connection of the two playwrights in their aesthetic approaches to representing love in Salome and The Shadowy Waters.

예이츠는 전통적인 시극이나 동시대의 사실주의적인 극과는 또 다른 극을 창조하였다. 예이츠의 극은 아리스토텔레스의 극 이론을 거부한 특유의 극작법 때문에 동시대 작가들의 작품과는 다르게 보아야 한다. 그의 극 󰡔그림자 어른거리는 바다󰡕를 통해 예이츠는 관객에게 장엄한 무아경을 주려했다. 이 논문은 예이츠가 드라마틱한 형식, 즉, 시, 신비로운 분위기, 그리고 두 주인공 포겔과 덱토라의 시적 언어를 통해 그런 효과를 어떻게 달성하는지를 밝힌다.

Yeats invented a new poetic drama, which is different from conventional verse plays and the realistic plays of his day. His unique dramatic constructions, which set him apart from his contemporary playwrights, deviate from Aristotelian rules for drama. The Shadowy Waters is intended to lift the audience to ecstasy, and its intention is successful. This article investigates how it is achieved by means of his unique dramatic form, such as verse, the mysterious aura, and the poetic words of Forgael and Dectora.
