The aim of this study was to investigate the biological activity of extracts obtained from the mycelium, sclerotium, and fruiting body of Wolfiporia cocos using different extraction solvents (hot water, 70% ethanol, and 70% methanol). Among the three developmental stages, the mycelium extracts showed the highest DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), nitrite scavenging activity, and total polyphenolic content. Among the extraction solvents in the context of the W. cocos mycelium, the DPPH radical scavenging activity, FRAP, and total polyphenol content in the hot-water extracts were significantly higher than those in the other extracts. In the case of the sclerotium, the reducing power, nitrite scavenging activity, and total polyphenol content were significantly higher in 70% ethanolic extracts. The fruiting body showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power, nitrite scavenging activity, and total polyphenol content in the context of hot-water extraction. Moreover, the β-glucan content was significantly higher in the sclerotium versus the mycelium or fruiting body. The total amino acid and total essential amino acid contents were remarkably higher in the mycelium and fruiting body than in the sclerotium; of note, and arginine (Arg) and phenylalanine (Phe) were highly detected among the amino acid components.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological activities of hot-water and 70% ethanol extracts of three edible mushroom species (Auricularia auricula, Tremella fuciformis, and Lentinus edodes) cultivated in Korea and China. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of hot-water extracts of Korean A. auricula, T. fuciformis, and L. edodes were significantly higher than those of the Chinese counterparts (p < 0.01). However, the nitrite scavenging activities of the hot-water extracts did not significantly differ among the mushrooms regardless of their origins. Chinese A. auricula showed the highest nitrite scavenging activity in the ethanol extract. The total polyphenol contents of the ethanol extracts of the three edible mushroom species from both of the countries were higher than those of the hot-water extracts. Korean A. auricula and T. fuciformis yielded a high polyphenol content with hot-water extraction. The ?-glucan contents of the Chinese A. auricula, T. fuciformis, and L. edodes extracts were 20.49%, 31.43%, and 30.09%, respectively, which were higher than those of the Korean counterparts. From the results of this study, it can be deduced that the maximum yield of nutritional ingredients can be extracted by using the optimal solvent for each mushroom species. These results are expected to be useful in appreciating the difference among extracts of Korean and Chinese edible mushrooms in terms of their physiological activities in the solvents used.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) has been a promising technology to reduce the air pollution caused by nitrogen oxides (NOx) in several industries. The consumption of SCR catalysts increases every year as technology evolves, however those have a limited lifespan and usually end up in landfills after they deactivate. Currently, the most widely used catalyst for and stationary applications is V2O5-WO3/TiO2 which can contain around 50% wt V2O5 and 7-10% wt of WO3. The vast uses for both vanadium and tungsten and the worldwide interest in recycling methods that allow for the extraction of metals from secondary sources represent the major motivation for this research. The extraction time, pH dependency, extraction concentration studies were carried out using Aliquat 336 in exxol D80 as the extractant. It was determined that to optimize the extraction of both metals 30min of contact time with an organic phase containing 0.5mol/L of Aliquat 336 are needed at a slightly acidic pH (~5.0). In addition, counter McCabe-Thiele studies allowed us to determine that one stage is necessary for the removal of 99% of vanadium while 2 stages are necessary for the extraction of tungsten and counter current simulations proved that the theoretical approach was correct.

The extraction and stripping of HCl from aqueous solutions by commercial extractants like LIX 63 and its mixture with TEHA/ Cyanex 923/ Aliquat 336 and ionic liquids like ALi-SCN, ALi-PC in kerosene was investigated. Among these extractants, ALi-PC showed the best extraction effectivity (above 80%), but it was difficult to strip HCl from the loaded phase. Although the extraction percentage of HCl by LIX 63 was not high, the stripping performance was above 81%. The addition of octanol to the organic phase led to negative effect on the extraction performance of HCl. The addition of C2H5OH into aqueous solutions significantly increased the extraction and stripping percentage of HCl by LIX 63, ALi-PC and ALi-SCN.

In order to develop a process for the recovery of valuable metals from spent LiBs, solvent extraction experiments were performed to separate Cu(II) and/or Co(II) from synthetic hydrochloric acid solutions containing Li(I), Mn(II), and Ni(II). Commercial amines (Alamine 336 and Aliquat 336) were employed and the extraction behavior of the metals was investigated as a function of the concentration of HCl and extractants. The results indicate that HCl concentration affected remarkably the extraction efficiency of the metals. Only Cu(II) was selectively at 1 M HCl concentration, while both Co(II) and Cu(II) was extracted by the amines when HCl concentration was higher than 5 M, leaving the other metal ions in the raffinate. Therefore, it was possible to selectively extract either Cu(II) or Co(II)/Cu(II) by adjusting the HCl concentration.

The extraction behavior of Mo(VI) and W(VI) from dilute chloride solution was investigated by employing amine (Alamine308 and TEHA) and neutral extractants (TOP) in the solution pH range from 2 to 9. W (VI) was selectively extracted over Mo(VI) by these three extractants and TEHA led to the highest separation factor. Without the pretreatment protonation of the tertiary amines, the extraction percentage of the two metal ions decreased steadily to zero as solution pH increased to 9. The extraction behavior of the metals was discussed on the basis of the distribution diagram of each metal. Alamine 308 and TEHA were much better than TOP in extracting and separating the two metal ions.

Solvent extraction of Li(I) from weak HCl solution was investigated by the mixture of TBP/MIBK with other neutral extractants such as Cyanex 923, TOPO and TOP. The TBP/MIBK organic phase was loaded with 0.1 M FeCl 3 at different HCl concentrations (1-9 M). Extraction of Li(I) from weak HCl solution is related to the stability of FeCl 3 in the organic mixture. As HCl concentration increased in preparing the loaded TBP phase, the stripping percentage of Fe(III) during the extraction of Li(I) became reduced and thus Li(I) could be extracted by ion exchange reaction with hydrogen ion in the organic. The concentration of TBP in the extractant mixture affected the stability of FeCl 3 . Compared to TBP, Fe(III) was easily stripped from the loaded MIBK and thus no Li(I) was extracted by the mixture with MIBK. The nature of neutral extractant with TBP/MIBK showed little difference in the extraction of Li(I) and stripping of Fe(III).

LIX 63 showed a selectivity for the extraction of Pd(II) over other PGMs, such as Pt(IV), Ir(IV) and Rh(III) from 6 M HCl solution. Moreover, HCl solution has significant effect on the oxidation-reduction reaction between Ir(IV) and LIX 63. Therefore, the applicability of employing LIX 63 for the separation of the 4 PGMs was investigated from 3 M HCl solution. From 3 M HCl solution, only Pd(II) was selectively extracted by LIX 63 and its extraction percentage was higher than from 6 M HCl solution. Extraction of the Pd(II) free raffinate with TBP led to the selective extraction of Pt(IV). After oxidation of Ir(III) with NaClO 3 to Ir(IV), extraction of the Pt(IV) free raffinate with Aliquat 336 selectively extracted Ir(IV). For each extraction step, optimum stripping conditions were obtained. By this process, it was possible to separate the 4 PGMs by solvent extraction from 3 M HCl solution.

The edible part of cucurbita moschata Duch, which is commonly used as a Korean traditional medicine as well as a popular food source, was studied to isolate anti-complementary substance. Extracts of Cucurbita moschata Duch showed significant anti-complementary activities on the classical pathway of the complement system. Especially, the ripe Cucurbita moschata Duch had more activity than that of the complement system. Especially, the ripe Cucurbita moschata Duch had more activity than that of the green one in terms of the overall anti-complementary activity. Among the extracts of various organic solvents of the ripe Cucurbita moschata Duch, chloroform and ethyl-acetate extracts, which are non-polar solvent extracts, showed the strongest activities. These results suggest that the major difference in the solvent extraction for the anti-complementary substances depends on the change in the chemical composition such as the fatty acid with the degree of ripening.
Evaluation of Solvent Extraction on the Anti-Inflammatory Efficacy of Glycyrrhiza uralensis

Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Leguminosae) is a well-known herbal medicine that has long been valued as a demulcent to relieve inflammatory disorders. To compare the influence of different solvents on the anti-inflammatory efficacy of G. uralensis, we measured the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF-α, and PGE2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells by extracts produced using different solvents (water, methanol, ethanol,or n-hexane). The results showed that methanol was the most effective solvent for the inhibition of both NO and PGE2production in RAW 264.7 cells. However, there was no difference among the extracts for inhibition of TNF-α. Further study must be performed for the analysis of correlation between the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts produced using different solvents and the content of major bioactive compounds in G. uralensis, such as glycyrrhizin and liquiritin. The present study suggests that methanol may be a more appropriate solvent of G. uralensis than other solvents (water, ethanol, and nhexane)to yield the greatest anti-inflammatory activity for food additives and medicine.

Solvent extraction experiments of Mn(II) by Cyanex 301 has been done from chloride solutions. The effect of variables, such as the initial pH and the concentration of Mn and extractant, on the extraction of Mn was investigated. The solvent extraction reaction was identified by applying a slope analysis method to the extraction data. In order to estimate the equilibrium constant for this solvent extraction reaction, the activity coefficients of aqueous species as well as the complex formation reactions between Mn and chloride ion were considered. Bromley equation was employed to calculate the activity coefficients. It was possible to predict the distribution coefficients of Mn from initial extraction data by employing the equilibrium constant. There was a good agreement between the experimentally measured distribution coefficients of Mn(II) and those predicted in this study.

Solvent extraction is an important process to recover pure gold and silver from various leaching solutions. The present work reviews the aqueous chemistry and solvent extraction separation of gold (I, III) and silver (I) from several leaching systems such as cyanide, thiocyanate, thiosulfate, thiourea and chloride medium. The extraction and separation behavior of gold (I, III) and silver (I) by various single and mixtures was compared on the basis of extraction reaction and the selectivity from these mediums. The chloride medium is recommended for the separation of gold and silver by solvent extraction in terms of extraction and stripping efficiency.

The separation of Ag and Zn from the nitrate leachate of spent silver oxide batteries using Cyanex272 as an extractant was investigated. The extraction of Ag and Zn was affected by the concentrations of nitric acid and the extractant. Cyanex-272 selectively extracted Zn over Ag when the HNO3 concentration was lower than 0.1 mol/L. The co-extracted Ag was removed by stripping with 1 mol/L thiourea. Stripping of Zn from the loaded Cyanex-272 was accomplished using 0.5 mol/L HNO3 after the removal of Ag. The McCabe?Thiele diagrams for the extraction of Zn with Cyanex-272, the scrubbing tripping of Ag with thiourea, and the stripping of Zn with HNO3 were constructed. The results were verified by simulated counter-current extraction and stripping experiments. Finally, a process for the separation of Ag and Zn from silver oxide batteries was proposed.

Volatile components in field bean (Dolichos lablab) were collected by simultaneous steam distillation and solvent extraction and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. One hundred and five components were identified including alcohols (32), ketones (18), aldehydes (9), acid (1), alkanes (5), aromatics compounds (4), esters (2), furans (2), naphthalene (1), pyrazines (4), pyridine (3), sulfur-containing compounds (4) and terpenes (7) and miscellaneous compounds (13). Relatively high concentration of n-hexanal found in the field bean might be undesirable to some consumers.

Algae oil has been studied to be a more viable source of biofuel than crops such as corn and coconut because they have a higher energy yield per hectare used. However, inefficient and expensive extraction methods have hindered this promising biofuel from being mass produced. This study aims to efficiently extract oil from a local strain of the diatom Navicula sp. through solvent extraction. Navicula sp. procured from SEAFDEC will be cultivated under controlled laboratory conditions for 30 to 45 days. These conditions include an aquarium, lighting provided by 2 florescent lamps, water treated with saltwater solution and media for the growth and maintenance of algae. The biomass will be harvested after the said period of time, and will then be subjected to solvent extraction, first with hexane, then with diethyl ether. The amount of extracted oil will determine the distribution ratio, which will determine how wellextracted the oil was from the biomass. No algae oil was extracted using diethyl ether, resulting in a distribution ratio of 0. 5.18 mL of algae oil was extracted using hexane, resulting in a distribution ratio of 2.72. The results of the study emphasized the viability of hexane as an extraction agent in the solvent extraction of Navicula sp.

이온강도가 센 염산용액에서 Alamine336과 TBP에 의한 염화 제 2철의 용매추출거동을 MaCabe-Thiele도를 이용하여 비교하였다. 초기 추출조건으로부터 수상과 유기상에서 철의 평형농도를 계산하여 두 추출제에 의한 철 추출의 등온추출곡선을 구했다. 평형농도 계산시 수상에서 착물형성반응과 물질수지 및 추출반응을 고려하였다. 1 M의 Aalmine336으로 0.5 M의 철을 3 M의 염산용액에서 수상과 유기상의 부피비가 6/5인 조건에서 추출시 2단에 철의 대부분이 유기상으로 추출되는 것을 MaCabe-Thiele도에서 알 수 있었다. 1 M의 Alamine336은 염산용액에서 철의 추출능력면에서 TBP 2-3 M과 비슷하였다. MaCabe-Thiele도와 두 추출제의 물리적 특성으로부터 Alamine336이 TBP보다 염산용액에서 철의 추출특성이 우수한 것을 알 수 있었다.
Solvent extraction behaviors of iron(III) from chloride solution at high ionic strength condition between Alamine336 and TBP were compared by using MaCabe-Thiele diagram. Extraction isotherms of iron by the two extractants were obtained by calculating the equilibrium concentrations of iron in both phases from the initial extraction conditions. In calculating the equilibrium concentration of iron, chemical equilibria in the aqueous phase and mass balance together with the solvent extraction reaction were considered. MaCabe-Thiele diagram of iron by 1 M Alamine336 indicated that two extraction stages could lead to complete extraction of 0.5 M iron from 3 M HCl solution at an A/O ratio of 6/5. The extraction power of 1 M Alamine336 was found to be the same as 2-3 M TBP. MaCabe-Thiele diagram together with the physical properties of the two extractants indicated that Alamine336 is superior to TBP in extracting ferric iron from chloride solution.
