In this study, a discrete-event simulation model was developed to simulate raw-ore haulage in an open-pit limestone mine using ICT monitoring data and time-study measurements. The haulage cycle comprises empty travel, loading, loaded travel, dumping at the hopper, and waiting for equipment. Because ICT logs do not explicitly distinguish between individual haulage-cycle components, loading, and dumping times, the ratio of empty to loaded travel time was supplemented using time-study measurements. In contrast, truck cycle times and haulage distances were derived from field records. The model was validated against field haulage records collected on April 5, 2023, and July 18, 2024; the error rates for the total transported ore were 4.95% and 1.39%, respectively, and the simulated haul counts by truck showed trends comparable to the field records. Equipment combination scenarios further demonstrated the model’s applicability in evaluating the effects of truck and loader types and fleet size on haulage performance.

Discrete event simulation has been widely used in construction operation modeling and analysis to measure and improve productivity of construction methods. However, the method has not been applied to Curtain-wall operation which cover 10~15 percent of entire project cost in tall building construction. It is crucial for a project manager to predict the productivity of curtain-wall operation alternatives. To secure the competitive standing in international tall building construction market, it is important to find the best construction operation alternative obtainable from optimum resource combination. Curtain-wall operation model using simulation is proposed to maximize the productivity of curtain-wall operation incorporating with the sensitivity analysis. A case study is presented to demonstrate the validity of the model. using Micro-Cyclone, the optimum resource combinations was found in two different perspectives, that is the cost and duration using sensitivity analysis. This study contributes to improve the productivity of curtain-wall operation by finding suitable resource combination at job-site.

This paper compares two well-known simulation techniques to model human reactive and different level of details for proactive behaviour modelling in service systems. The simulation methods used are Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and combined DES and Agent-Based Simulation (ABS) called DES-ABS. We consider two proactive human behaviours which are taking charge from experience and taking the initiative to fulfil a goal. We investigate the similarities and differences of model results performance in both simulation models. The results of our experiments show that the level of pro-activeness considered in the simulation model has a big impact on the output. However, there is no significant difference between the results from the DES and the DES-ABS simulation models. Therefore, for service systems of the type we investigated, it is suggested to use DES as the preferred analysis tool.

A lot of manufacturing knowledge and method have applied to increase manufacturing efficiency in industry field. DES(Discrete Event Simulation) is one of solution to deal with manufacturing problems in factory. Beginning of research, old maintenance system of KNR ( Korea National Railroad) and its technical problems are basically investigated. KNR has maintained railway vehicle with their own solution based on experience. Very advanced railway vehicles such as KTX (Korea Train Express) and TTX(Tilting Train Express) will be difficult to maintain with their old maintenance method. In order to apply knowledge of DES, maintenance field of railway must be considered. Imaginary maintenance machine are selected to variable of DES. Maintenance capability of each machine will be evaluated base on imaginary data from imaginary machine. The machine could be very expensive as well as difficult to replace. Target of research is minimization of number of machine in railway workshop. So basic knowledge of discrete event simulation is introduced. Then five essential stages of discrete event simulation are provided. Each maintenance case defined as event.

This paper presents a new approach to create 3D visualization from discrete simulation results. This approach connects discrete event simulation directly to 3D animation with its novel methods that analyze and convert discrete simulation results into animation events to trigger 3D animation. In addition, it constructs a 3D animation framework for the visualization of discrete simulation results. This framework supports the reuse of both the existing 3D animation objects and behavior components, and allows the rapid development of new 3D animation objects by users with no special knowledge in computer graphics. This approach has been implemented with the software component technology. As an application in virtual manufacturing, visualizations of an electronics assembly factory are also provided in the paper to demonstrate the performance of this new approach.

The patient's waiting time and length of stay have been reported as a factor decreasing their satisfaction in the hospital, especially in developing countries. This paper focuses on modeling hospital's outpatient department workflow in a developing country and optimizing the patient waiting time as well as total length of stay. By using discrete-event simulation, many alternative scenarios have raised, such as adding more working time, altering human resources, and adjusting the staff's responsibility, those scenarios will be examined to explore better settings for the hospital. The results show that possible to achieve a 9.6% reduction in patient total length of stay and it could be accomplished without adding more resources to the hospital.

The management of vehicular supply of "perishable" construction material, such as concrete mixes, faces a series of uncertainties such as weather, daily traffic patterns and accidents. Presented in this paper is a logistics control model for managing a hauling fleet with interrelated processes at both ends and queue capacities. Discrete event simulation is used to model the complex interactions of production units and the randomness of the real world. Two alternative strategies for ready mix concrete delivery, with and without an off-site waiting queue, are studied to compare supply performance. Secondly, the paper discusses the effect of an agent-based GPS tracking system providing real-time travel data that lessens the uncertainty of trucking time. The results show that the combination of GPS information with off-site queuing reduces productivity loss and process wastes of concrete placement as well as the idleness of supply trucks when crew or pump experience an unexpected stoppage.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to use discrete event simulation (DES) to model the impact of two universal suiciderisk screening scenarios (emergency department [ED] and hospital-wide) on mean length of stay (LOS), wait times, andoverflow of our secure patient care unit for patients being evaluated for a behavioral health complaint (BHC) in the ED of alarge, academic children’s hospital. Methods: We developed a conceptual model of BHC patient flow through the ED, incorporatinganticipated system changes with both universal suicide risk screening scenarios. Retrospective site-specific patienttracking data from 2017 were used to generate model parameters and validate model output metrics with a random 50/50split for derivation and validation data. Results: The model predicted small increases (less than 1 hour) in LOS and waittimes for our BHC patients in both universal screening scenarios. However, the days per year in which the ED experiencedsecure unit overflow increased (existing system: 52.9 days; 95% CI, 51.5?54.3 days; ED: 94.4 days; 95% CI, 92.6?96.2 days;and hospital-wide: 276.9 days; 95% CI, 274.8?279.0 days). Conclusions: The DES model predicted that implementation of eitheruniversal suicide risk screening scenario would not severely impact LOS or wait times for BHC patients in our ED. However, universal screening would greatly stress our existing ED capacity to care for BHC patients in secure, dedicated patientareas by creating more overflow.

This paper introduces facility operation modeling and simulation based primarily on a discrete event system modeling scheme. Many modern industrial facilities are so complex that their operational status cannot be estimated by simple calculations. In general, a facility can consist of many processes and transfers of material between processes that may be modeled as a discrete event system. This paper introduces the current status of studies on operation modeling and simulation for typical nuclear facilities, along with some examples. In addition, this paper provides insights about how a discrete event system can be applied to a model for a nuclear facility. A headend facility is chosen for operation modeling and the simulation, and detailed procedure is thoroughly described from modeling to an analysis of discrete event results. These kinds of modeling and simulation are very important because they can contribute to facility design and operation in terms of prediction of system behavior, quantification of facility capacity, bottleneck identification and efficient operation scheduling.

A mobile agent is an autonomous software agent capable of moving from one computer to another while performing its tasks. We view the agent as a discrete event system in the view of its computation and communication. This paper presents a methodology far modeling and simulation of such a mobile agent system as a discrete event system. The methodology is based on the Mobile Discrete Event System Specification (MDEVS) formalism and the associated simulation environment AgentSim which are previously developed by the authors. Within the methodology an atomic model represents dynamics of a mobile agent; a coupled model is modeled as mobile agent servers for representation of structural changes between atomic agents. Being based on the object-oriented environment the modeling methodology exploits inheritance of basic classes AtomicModel and CoupledModel provided by AgentSim.

The sophistication of current software applications results in the increasing cost fur software development time. The component-based software development framework is proposed to overcome the difficulty and time-consuming requirements by modularity and reusability. As is the general software case, a component-based simulation framework encourages the reusability of the real system model based on the modularity of the applied simulation methodology. This paper presents a component-based simulation environment that is based on the DEVS/COM run-time infrastructure. The DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) formalism provides a formal modeling and simulation framework for the generic dynamic systems [1] and Microsoft's COM (Component Object Model) is one of the strongest competitor fur the component standard. The reusability by the DEVS/COM simulation environment saves model development time remarkably and component technology make simulator itself to be a subparts of real application.

Modeling and simulation is a technique used for operational verification, performance analysis, operational optimization, and prediction of target systems. Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) of this representative technology defines models with a strict formalism and stratifies the structures between the models. When the atomic DEVS models operate with an intention different the target system, the simulation may lead to erroneous decision-making. However, most DEVS systems have the exclusion of the model test or provision of the manual test, so developers spend a lot of time verifying the atomic models. In this paper, we propose a script-based automated test system for accurate and fast validation of atomic models in Python-based DEVS. The proposed system uses both the existing method of manual testing and the new method of the script-based testing. As Experimental results in our system, the script-based test method was executed within 24 millisecond when the script was executed 10 times consecutively. Thus, the proposed system guarantees a fast verification time of the atomic models in our script-based test and improves the reusability of the test script.

In this paper, the author proposes a method for detecting modification of transmitted messages in C/C++ based Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) simulation. When a message generated by a model instance is delivered to other model instances, it may be modified by some of the recipients. Such modifications may corrupt simulation results, which may lead to wrong decision making. In the proposed method, every model instance stores a copy of every transmitted message. Before the deletion of the transmitted message, the instance compares them. Once a modification has been detected, the method interrupt the current simulation run. The procedure is automatically performed by a simulator instance. Thus, the method does not require programmers to follow secure coding or to add specific codes in their models. The performance of the method is compared with a DEVS simulator.

The Sortie Generation Rate (SGR), which measures the number of sorties that an airbase can produce per unit of time, is crucial for assessing operational capacity. However, the unique spatial and environmental constraints on aircraft carriers complicate the direct application of land-based SGR studies to maritime settings. This study introduces a framework for analyzing the Sortie Generation Process (SGP) on aircraft carriers, using discrete event simulation adapted to these constraints. This approach conceptualizes the SGP similar to a logistics and production system, wherein sorties are systematically generated through the operations of the aircraft. The proposed framework defines and implements the necessary simulation functions with the discrete event simulation method for the purpose of SGP analysis. Through a series of experiments, this study demonstrates the framework's effectiveness and its practical applicability to aircraft carrier operations, potentially enhancing sortie generation capabilities in naval aviation.

This paper deals with the priority queues exploited for the management of future event list in discrete event simulation. Among several implementations of priority queues, MList which consists of 3 tiers has been known to reveal the good performance. To improve the performance of MList, Dynamic-Shift MList (DSMList) is proposed in this paper. Whenever the number of events in tier 3 exceeds a critical number, DSMList creates new calendar queue in tier 2, then moves events from Tier 3 to the calendar queue. Instead of one calendar queue, therefore, a number of calendar queues are dynamically created in tier 2. Throughout experiments for the performance evaluation of DSMList, it shows that at least 20% improvement is obtained compared with MList.
