This study examines how disability is represented in the drama “Our Unwritten Seoul” and explores its broader implications. First, the findings indicate that the drama presents disability-related vulnerability as a universal human condition. Rather than portraying characters with disabilities as “special” or marginalized, the narrative highlights their multifaceted identities and presents disability as just one aspect of their identities. By depicting most of its characters as vulnerable in different ways, the drama fosters a sense of shared understanding among viewers. This empathy allows the audience to perceive disability-related vulnerability not as an isolated issue, but as part of a shared human experience. Second, the drama reveals the immense difficulty of admitting one’s vulnerability. It suggests that individuals can recognize and disclose their vulnerabilities only when they accept both the universality of vulnerability and the inherently interdependent, and sometimes unequal, nature of human relationships. Acknowledging these realities is a vital prerequisite for overcoming the “suspended situations” caused by vulnerability. Finally, by depicting the process of becoming disabled, the drama enables viewers to develop a deeper understanding of the perspectives of individuals with disabilities and the environments they encounter. This understanding encourages a collective imagination for a supportive, care-oriented society, creating possibilities for solidarity among all vulnerable people.

In Korean dramas, it is not common to treat the disabled as the subject or the disabled as the main character. In most TV dramas, the disabled often appeared as surrounding characters rather than major characters. In recent years, there has been a change in the way people with disabilities appear in Korean dramas. Korean dramas that reproduce the disabled as a subjective character, away from the object of care or a secondary character that evokes sympathy or compassion, have begun to increase. <Tell Me I Love You> and <Twinkle Watermelon> have a common point that a deaf person appears as a major character based on a hearing impairment. What is noteworthy about the two dramas is that they are actively using sign language, unlike existing Korean dramas dealing with hearing-impaired people. The change in the drama platform and the influence of the barrier-free cultural movement, the reproduction of the hearing-impaired (person) has begun to change. The two dramas set the hearing impairment as an element that must be hidden or overcome in the existing dramas, and do not unrealistically portray the hearing-impaired. <Tell Me I Love You> and <Twinkle Watermelon> can be expected to provide a new turning point in Korean dramas dealing with disabilities in that they are taking a reproduction method of understanding the language and culture of the deaf, away from the perspective of the non-disabled.

In Korea, disability and women’s reproduction have not been interrelated subjects, and, problematically, neither the women’s movement nor the disability rights movement has significantly addressed the others’ issue. Despite there being a strong tendency toward a pro-life stance, life with disabilities or illness is always undoubtedly excluded from the protection of the right to life. Both movements, I argue, exclude the voice and crucial position of women with disabilities. The objective of this study is to expose the reproductive experiences of women with disabilities. This study also urges that the growing discourses of “normality”, and the right to choose and the right to life, which are being propelled especially by biotechnology, must include the perspectives and experiences of people with disabilities. Although it is still a common notion that women with disabilities should not get pregnant or give birth to a child, marriage, pregnancy and childbirth are, in fact, very urgent processes for numerous women with disabilities. There is, however, a continuous anxiety present. During these processes, the women are made to strive toward, yet at the same time suffer from, the problem of normality and the related (im)possibilities of acquiring the rights that come with citizenship. Therefore, many pregnant women with disabilities are more compelled to get prenatal screenings, and they more likely to choose to terminate a pregnancy if there is anything “abnormal” in the prenatal diagnosis. Meanwhile, new biotechnology, such as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), is making it possible to screen and allow for the bearing/elimination of specific kinds of lives, even in the embryonic stage. Women with genetic disabilities are, as a result, forced to choose normality, and technology proceeds to reproduce more powerfully and strengthen the already established normative concepts of “normality” and “abnormality.”The reproductive experiences of women with disabilities reveal the dynamically reconstructed tendency of bodily norms. Today’s political, economic and cultural norms increasingly infiltrate the individual body in various ways in order to control “normality,” whether voluntarily or not and concealed by the rhetoric of “choice” and “rights.” As the standards of “normality” are becoming higher, individuals have to strive to ensure their “rights.” More specifically, to widen and deepen the discourse of women’s reproductive rights and restart a new discussion on the politics of reproduction, we need to actively consult and begin to analyze the perspectives and experiences of women with disabilities.

The proletarian novels during the colonial period reproduce diseases and disabilities by corresponding them to classes. The "Sick Body" reproduced in the novel is neither deemed as something fateful nor stays in the domain of healing and treatment. The proletarian novels require attention in that they enabled us to deliberate the diseases and disabilities as social things beyond these individual perspectives. The diseases and disabilities reproduced in proletarian novels are a reality itself that suffers from them rather than a metaphor, and are created by social structural discrimination and oppression. They expose such a body realistically, thereby entailing the social reporting of the violence of ‘normality’ that is represented as a ‘healthy body’ and cracking it. The normality at this time embraces the order created by imperialism and capitalism. This study examines two aspects of the proletarian novels that reproduce diseases and disabilities. One is that it is revealing an awareness of how oppression and exploitation are carved into the ‘Sick Body.’ And, another is that the ‘Sick Body’ is playing an important role in discovering existence in classes and deriving solidarity among workers, especially in novels focusing on the issues of industrial accidents. In summary, the diseases and disabilities reproduced in proletarian novels cause political meaning in that they disclose the social conditions in which a ‘Sick’ existence has been put in place and rather attempt to link with surroundings through pain, rather than being considered as the subjects to be cured actively.

This paper analyzed the reproduction of male “impotence” in Korean films between the 1960s and early 1970s, such as Isaengmyeong dahadorok (To The Death), Chungnyeo (Insect Woman), and Milwol (Honeymoon), from the perspective of queer/disabled studies. Regarding the fact that the appearance of disabled sexuality like “impotence” reveals changes in Korean masculinity, this study analyzed types of production in films that show various spectra. First, changes in sexual politics of the Cold War are the primary background in which the cultural reproduction of male “impotence” appeared. In other words, the ‘normal’ body and sexuality norms were created in the process of interconnecting the Cold War politics that formed the ideological normality and the gender politics that cast the dual gender-heterosexual normality. Second, the films analyzed in this study showed different methods used by “impotent” men, the “abnormal” and pathological beings, to acquire “normality.” The sexual pleasure of disabled soldiers who have damaged bodies was turned into social desire. In addition, whereas the sexual pleasure of male patriarchs in the bedroom was protected and encouraged by family planning programs to maintain the marriage system, their reproductive ability was controlled to produce a high-quality population. On the contrary, homosexual desires outside the family system were blocked and convicted entirely. In short, from the historical context of the time, the male sexuality norms did not advocate sexual pleasure and reproductive ability unconditionally. They were hierarchical biopolitics that sometimes had to be conciliated by other desires, regulated adequately, or convicted.
