본 연구는 대학 수준의 교양영어 수업에서 디지털 영상 프로젝트 활동의 교육적 효과를 구현하고 검토하고 자 하였다. 영어 교실에서 디지털 영상 프로젝트를 적용한 사례연구를 통해 본 프로젝트에 대한 학습자들의 만 족도와 긍정적으로 그리고 부정적으로 인식하는 점을 분석하여 디지털 영상 프로젝트를 영어 교실에서 활용할 경우 고려해야 할 사항들을 함께 분석하였다. 학습자들은 주어진 학문 분야와 관련된 주제를 정하고 본인이 원 하는 형식으로 영상을 제작하고 편집하도록 요청받았다. 연구 방법은 개방형 설문지와 반구조화 인터뷰를 사 용하여 질적 및 양적 분석을 혼합하여 수행하였다. 분석 결과 학생들은 디지털 영상 프로젝트 활동에 전반적으 로 만족하는 것으로 나타났다(67.7%). 학습자들은 주제 선택 자율성, 개인 역량 향상, 재미와 성취감, 영어 말하 기 향상을 디지털 비디오 프로젝트 활동의 긍정적인 점으로 꼽았다. 반면, 학습자들은 자신의 소극적 성격에 따른 학습에 대한 수동적인 접근 방식과 영상 제작 및 편집 기술의 부족, 그리고 프로젝트 활동과 영어 능력의 약한 상관관계를 부정적인 점으로 지적했다. 본 논문은 영어 교실에서 디지털 영상 프로젝트를 구현하는 교육 자들을 위해 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 교육적 제언을 제시하였다.

This study implemented and examined the pedagogical effects of digital video project activities in university-level liberal arts English classes. Through a case study of the application of a digital video project in an English classroom, we analyzed learners' satisfaction with the project and their positive and negative perceptions of it, and analyzed the factors to consider when utilizing a digital video project activities in an English classes. Students were asked to come up with topics related to a given academic field and produce and edit videos in the format of their choice. In parallel, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted using open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The analyses showed that the students were generally satisfied with the digital video project activities (67.7%). They identified topic selection autonomy, individual capability improvements, fun and sense of accomplishment, and English speaking improvements as benefits of the digital video project activities. Meanwhile, they highlighted their own passive approaches to learning and lack of video production and editing skills as well as the activities’ weak correlation with English proficiency as downsides. This article concludes by making pedagogical suggestions based on these findings for educators implementing digital video projects in English classrooms.

디지털 복합양식 글쓰기는 전통적인 단일양식 글쓰기와 달리, 디지털 기술을 활용하여 이미지, 텍스트, 소리, 영상 등 다양한 커뮤니케이션 양식을 결합하여 콘텐츠를 생성하는 방식을 의미한다. 본 연구의목적은 대학 교양 영어 수업에서 디지털 복합양식 글쓰기의 한 형태인 디지털 복합양식 비디오를유튜브 형식으로 제작해보고 이에 대한 학생들의 인식과 반응을 알아보는 것이다. 본 연구에는 총57명의 대학생이 참여하였으며, 설문 조사와 인터뷰를 통해 데이터를 수집하였다. 연구 결과, 디지털복합양식 비디오 프로젝트 경험에 대한 학생들의 인식과 반응은 전반적으로 매우 긍정적인 것으로나타났다. 학생들은 주요 장점으로 영어 실력 향상, 자기주도학습 능력 강화, 그리고 학습의 재미와즐거움을 언급하였다. 그러나 학생들은 명확한 의사전달, 영상 제작 및 편집 기술, 주제 선정과 관련된어려움도 경험한 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 교양 영어 수업에 디지털 복합양식 비디오 프로젝트를활용하기 위한 교육적 함의를 논의하였다.

Digital multimodal composing, distinct from traditional unimodal composition, encompasses the integration of variouscommunicative modes- such as text, images, audio, and video- facilitated by digital technology. This study aims to examineuniversity students' perceptions and experiences regarding the creation of YouTube digital multimodal videos, a specific formof digital multimodal composing, within a college-level general English course. A total of 57 university students participatedin the study, with data collected through a combination of surveys and interviews. The findings indicate that the studentsgenerally responded positively to the digital multimodal video project. They reported several benefits, including enhancedEnglish proficiency, increased self-directed learning capabilities, and overall enjoyment of the task. However, the studentsalso encountered significant challenges, particularly in articulating their ideas clearly in English, as well as in the technicalaspects of video production and editing, and in selecting appropriate topics. Pedagogical implications for incorporating digitalmultimodal video projects into university general English classes are discussed.
