The purpose of this study is to research on the video works of contemporary participatory performances with a focus on video media in their participatory art practices. For this research, 1960-1970s early video arts and performance arts are examined, and the use of video for their art practice are investigated respectively. This examination aims to link the contemporary participatory performances to the context of art history and media aesthetics. Two categories of video usage for the participatory works can be found: first, media-centered works which recognize media-specificity of the video medium, and second, performance-centered works which uses video just for documenting its ephemeral practices. Finally, this research intends to cover how such approaches of video have been evolved in comtemporary participatory performances when they are connected to social media and Internet.

본 논문은 참여 예술이라는 이름하에 행해지는 여러 형태의 작품들 중 관객 참여형 퍼포먼스와 그것의 영 상기록물을 비디오 매체의 활용에 주목하여 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 관객 참여형 퍼포먼스 의 기원을 1960-70년대 비디오아트 및 퍼포먼스아트에서 찾아보며 이들이 어떻게 비디오를 사용하고 있는 지 점검한다. 이는 오늘날의 관객 참여형 퍼포먼스 영상기록물을 미술사적이며 미학적 맥락에서 연결시켜 바라보고자 하는 것이다. 1960-70년대 비디오아트 및 퍼포먼스아트의 영상기록물에서 오늘날의 관객 참여 형 퍼포먼스 영상기록물에 이르기까지 비디오의 활용에 따른 접근은 크게 두 가지로 분류된다. 첫째, 비디 오에 대한 매체성을 인식하고 접근한 매체 중심의 비디오작업이고 둘째, 일시적 속성의 퍼포먼스에 대한 기록을 위해 비디오 영상을 활용한 퍼포먼스 중심의 비디오작업이다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 이러한 비디 오에 대한 접근과 활용이 관객 참여형 퍼포먼스의 영상기록물에서 소셜미디어와 인터넷과 연결됨으로써 어떻게 확장, 진화해 가고 있는지 비디오 매체성을 중심으로 고찰한다.
