The traditional fashion industry generates a significant amount of waste throughout the production process, highlighting the growing importance of research aimed at achieving sustainable fashion. In response, various efforts have been undertaken across academia and industry to promote sustainability in material usage, production methods, and industrial systems. This study aims to develop a zero-waste pattern cutting (ZWPC) technique that enables sustainability at the pattern and cutting stages. In particular, it seeks to address the limitations of existing ZWPC approaches, which often face difficulties in industrial application due to discrepancies from ready-to-wear (RTW) styles and incompatibility with conventional production systems. To this end, a pattern cutting method utilizing apparel CAD commonly used in the fashion industry was developed as an alternative approach that can be integrated into RTW manufacturing environments. The main findings are as follows. First, a zero-waste women’s RTW jacket pattern was developed using apparel CAD. Second, a comparative analysis with a conventionally designed control pattern confirmed reductions in both fabric consumption and material waste. Third, industry professionals evaluated the experimental pattern through sample production and in-depth interviews, verifying its practical applicability across each stage of the manufacturing process. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the proposed method, as well as its applicability to the RTW industry and educational contexts, were discussed. This study is significant in that it presents a ZWPC approach that maintains existing RTW aesthetics and industrial infrastructure. By expanding the scope of future research and establishing clearer guidelines for industrial and educational applications, this approach has the potential to develop into a practical and sustainable fashion design methodology applicable to real-world production settings.

Pattern cutting is a key element that distinguishes fashion brand identity from other brands. Zero wasted pattern cutting was originally intended to minimize the waste of fabric, but is proposed as a method of creative pattern cutting recently through active research. The purpose of this study is to study focus on menswear because the previous researches mostly focused on womenswear in zero waste pattern cutting. Through the theoretical research, the concept and the background of zero waste were investigated, and the menswear zero waste pattern cutting was classified into three kinds. Jigsaw-cutting uses the existing normal pattern block as a basis and modified it to eliminate space between patterns. Geometric-cutting using straight lines, curved lines, and basic shapes has a simple form and is out of the general pattern production method. The Minimal-cutting minimizes the number of cuttings, and constructs costume through three-dimensional understanding. This zero waste pattern cutting incorporates the roles of designers and pattern makers enabling innovative and creative patternmaking. It is similar to the general form of ready-to-wear, so it can be linked with the actual industry and it can be introduced into womenswear. This study is important for establishing a basis that zero waist pattern cutting is able to apply to the actual menswear pattern cutting as a creative design tool beyond the ethical and economic concepts.

Zero-waste pattern cutting is a groundbreaking sustainable fashion practice. However, few brands and designers have pursued this method because it requires creative pattern design that diverges from the existing process of using pattern slopers. Therefore, application within the fashion industry is not sufficient. Therefore, in an attempt to highlight the key characteristics of zero-waste pattern design, this study classifies and analyzes cases in which similar designs employ zero-waste pattern-cutting techniques. We hope to make zero-waste pattern design more accessible by presenting realistic pattern-cutting guidelines. To this end, theoretical research on relevant literature, previous research, and online resources and an empirical analysis of cases involving zero-waste pattern cutting were conducted in parallel. As a result of the study, we were able to classify the factors of zero-waste pattern design in terms of fabric use, design, and composition. Regarding materials, our research revealed the importance of appropriate fabric width, understanding the difference between waste minimization and minimal fabric use, and easy reuse and recycling. In terms of design, the simultaneous progress of pattern and design work, adjustable loose silhouettes, and the use of surplus fabric for functional and decorative details emerged as key characteristics. For composition, we found that size adjustment limits, arrangement irregularity, and pattern shapes were crucial elements and that various arrangements revealed unlimited design potential.
