That the human being has freedom points at the fact that it has a oneself decision. So the freedom comes when oneself governs oneself absolutely. In Iliad and Odyssey of Homer, the physical organon are the thymos and the nous that order heroes to decide and act. But the thymos and the nous can not decide and act in themselves. The heroes who appear in the Iliad and Odyssey point as the cause of their decision and behavior not something in themselves but surpass being outside of them. It is Gods’ aitia. This tendency originates the lack of the moral responsibility toward behavior, the inner self and the inner concept of soul. Homer rather believed that heroes’ behaviors were decided by Gods. Homer’s heroes only accomplished Gods’ order and selected with the help of Gods when the decision was needed. So it is understood that Homer’s heroes did not have freedom and responsibility.

After the Korean War, the structure of the Cold War order and the division between the two Koreas has been changing, and South Korea has maintained its position as an anti-communist nation. In the situation of division of the two Koreas in hostile symbiosis, South Korea’s sovereignty was demonstrated in the process of regulating North Korea as enemy and reproducing anti-communism ideology. And at this time the spies functioned as a key ideological device. In Park Chung-hee’s dictatorship regime and then Chun Doo-Hwan’s military dictatorship regime, the Korean residents in Japan was manipulated as a spy by public security agencies. After liberation, Korean residents in Japan have been excluded as targets of policy of abandoning people in South Korean society, and they have been called as an optimized object of the dictatorial regime’s spy. And in the course of such spy manipulation, a spy narrative based on the law was created. However, the spy manipulation cases were revealed at the time when the self-confessions and testimony of the Korean residents in Japan who were manipulated by espionage were carried out. And at this time, the writing of the Korean residents in Japan shows the writing of Parresia as a courage to take risks and tell the truth.

Purpose:This study analyzed the characters as the subjects of parresia by applying the concept of parresia to the power relations of school story, and explored the possibility of novel education through characters. Methods:After examining Foucault’s theory of subjectivation and the discussion of parresia, I selected “For my younger brother” and “Old Road to Gangneung” as an analysis object. The analysis categories were set to ‘resistance to power and subjectivation as self-creation’, ‘support of facilitators for the practice of parresia’, and ‘parresia to advance into self-care’. Results:The practice shown by the character as a parresiast was manifested as active utterances and acts of resistance without utterances, and I identified the minor characters who were facilitators and practitioners, and confirmed the pattern of self-care from parresia to reflection. The analysis can be proposed as a novel education model, firstly, to confirm the composition of the characters and to understand whether or not parresia is practiced, secondly, to self-reflection on practice of parresia, and third, to reread through criticism of parresia. Conclusion:This study discussed that learned readers can read novels critically and reflectively through attention to the character who practice parresia in school story.

This study approaches the psychologue of Thomas Sterns Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” with the concept of parresia which was issued by Michel Foucault, and tries to figure out the ways in which the universal mode of moral life in his works. Foucault’s parresia that tries to practically approach the truth includes the concept of self-criticism in the light of self-conscious guidance. In particular, in the Christian history, the sense of parresia makes human-beings pursue logos, an human intermediate image that on the one hand directs to God’s love, and on the other hand gets along with real people. In other words, early Christianity ideally pursues agape, but in reality it would present real marriage ethically through parresia. In this respect, Eliot's psychologue combines extreme two loves, “id” and “super ego” concepts through metaphysical conceit, and gives space to consider what ethical lives are between them the same as parresia in the early Christianity. Therefore, given his psychologue is thought experiment, Eliot is constantly demonstrating a possible ethical love in the real world between two extreme loves.
