This paper aims to explore the ambiguous and equivocal meanings of toxic substances as both symbols and entities in White Noise through the concept of hyperobjects by Timothy Morton. Niodine D in the novel shares the main features of hyperobjects; viscosity, phasing, temporally undulation, unlocality, interobjectivity. Because hyperobjects exceed the recognizable range of human senses of space and time, it is extremely difficult to understand them with the anthrophocentric standards and traditional ways of thinking. Niodine D has been often interpreted as a symbol to reveal the postmodern phenomenon that representations replace realities, which is caused from its nature as a hyperobject. It is impossible to escape or eliminate it because of its viscosity. Jack Gladney tries to find a solution by relying upon the power of modern technology, but it fails to grasp its natures and influences. Niodine D prompts Jack Gladney to awake from the illusion that rational reason can provide proper solutions for all the problems including ecological disasters. It requires human to recognize the limit of rational reason and reconsider the interconnected relationship of human and non-human elements.

This study explores the role of catastrophic narrative in the current age of ecological crises. ‘The Anthropocene,’ a neologism referring to our current geological age, makes us face the exigencies of ecological devastations around the world. News of heatwaves, tsunamis, hurricanes, micro dust and so on has become a global phenomenon. Scientific researche tells us that these disastrous ecological events have resulted mostly from the anthropocentric activities, driven by capitalism since the Industrial Revolution. In the times of the Anthropocene, therefore, everything human could be shifted: from human history to ecological history, from human agency to non-human environment, etc. So, what can this tell us about literature? Literature can be thought of as a narrative that deals with humans, with non-humans and nature only as a background. But in the age of the Anthropocene, this conventional concept of literature should be reinvented according to the changing environment. This study suggests that catastrophic narrative, which imagines and depicts the end of the current order, has features that fit the literature in the Anthropocene. Imagining a deadly situation for the collective human race, catastrophic narrative defamiliarizes familiar settings and themes of modern, humanist, realist fictions: it concretely, as well as metaphorically, imagines the end of human beings; it puts ecological issues above human issues; it accepts the post-human conditions; and it presents conventional humanist values as estranged. By analyzing zombie narrative as a case study for these arguments, this article proposes that now is the right time to read and think seriously about the possibilities of catastrophic narrative.

The only filmic work bequeathed by Samuel Beckett, Film (1965), as its self-reflexive title suggests, problematizes the ontological implications of sensory perception in various registers including sight, hearing and touch. The work also stands out in the writer’s oeuvre in that the story’s setting is, unlike his other literary texts, openly acknowledged (“about 1929” New York city), and that exceptional aspect merits analyses in its own right. Yet, the more pertinent bearings of Film come into view when juxtaposed to Derrida’s remark regarding Beckett’s signatory ambivalence vis-a-vis nihilism. How to make sense of the succeeding acts of ‘double apprehension’ (chasing/chased, seeing/seen, touching/touched, etc.) in which E and O seem to be indissociably caught? Do they attest to the ineluctable double nature of nihilism circumscribing the modernity or point instead to a way out, an exit strategy perhaps resembling Nancy’s account of ex nihilo? By tracing Film’s narrative movement in relation to the shifting sense of “we” in the deconstructive discourse of Derrida and Nancy, my paper suggests that the ultimate quandary we find ourselves as Film’s audience in the 21st century rather turns out to be the penetrating undulations of hyperobjects, which immobilize the sense of critical distance vouchsafed by such concepts as differance and exscription.

The 2025 performing arts <Green Shivering> at the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan offers an aesthetic experience that approaches the entangled crises of nature and humanity in the Anthropocene through the medium of sensory perception. As a hybrid exhibition combining installation, video, performance, and sound art, <Green Shivering> invites viewers into a mode of “ecognosis”?an ecological awareness?where humans and nonhumans, nature and civilization, come to know one another through the shared language of feeling beyond their conventional boundaries. Drawing on Timothy Morton’s concept of hyperobjects?things such as objects dispersed across vast scales of time and space, the Anthropocene, or global warming itself?the works of artists including Sojin Kwak, Unknown Kim, Sujin Jade Lee, Goeun Lim, and Heiner Goebbels critically reflect on how these entities enter into relation with human-object. From the perspective of object-oriented ontology, objects can only be encountered truthfully when released from the habitual grip of causal reasoning. The participating artists’ works activate the senses to engage with nature-as-object through the rhetorical strategy of metonymy, prompting new modes of thought and perception. Through this approach, the exhibition estranges nature?once reduced to the background of agricultural logistics or idealized as Great Nature?and reintroduces it as an autonomous, unfamiliar object. It reminds us that these entities have always coexisted with humans as equal presences within the great forest of the Earth, deeply entangled with and constitutive of our shared planetary existence.

The virus that has tormented humanity over the past few years has chosen concealment and mutation as its strategies for penetrating the Anthropocene. One of its primary strategies was concealment, which allowed it to bypass humanity’s routine surveillance and epidemic prevention systems, thereby escalating into a global pandemic. Another key strategy was mutation, which enabled it to evade the spike proteins targeted by vaccines, continuing to pose a threat to humanity. The primary reason this was possible was the virus’s acquisition of invisibility due to its nanoscale minuteness. Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) refers to such nanoscale entities as nano- objects. Nano-objects occupy the opposite end of the spectrum from hyperobjects (Morton, 2013). Whereas nano-objects are so minuscule that they escape human perception, hyperobjects are so vast and temporally dispersed that they, too, elude human comprehension. In the Anthropocene, humanity must navigate its survival between the threats of nano-objects-such as viruses, microplastics, and fine dust- and hyperobjects-such as climate crises, Styrofoam, and radioactive materials. Bruno Latour, the founder of Actor-Network Theory, developed a unique theory of cosmopolitics in response to the crises of the Anthropocene in his later years. This paper examines the threats posed by nano-objects and hyperobjects and explores Latour’s proposed solutions to these existential challenges.
