Automated error detection and feedback systems are becoming an important component of online writing practice services for ESL/EFL (English as a second/foreign language) learners. The main purposes of the study are to: (a) collect samples of essays written by ESL learners with different native language (or L1) backgrounds that are error-coded by an early version of an automated error-detection system (CritiqueTM) and trained human coders; and (b) identify some unique patterns of writing errors for different first language (L1) groups. Data analyzed in this study included 18, 439 TOEFL◯R CBT essays error-coded by CritiqueTM and a much smaller, combined sample of 480 TOEFL◯R CBT/TOEFL iBT◯R essays error-coded by trained human coders. A comparison of error rates across five different language groups showed some unique patterns: (a) the Arabic and Spanish groups were the highest on both spelling and punctuation errors; (b) the Korean and Japanese groups had the highest article error frequency; and (c) the Chinese group had the highest number of errors related to verb conjugations or adjective and noun inflections. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of understanding the nature of L1-related writing errors and enhancing the automated error detection and feedback systems.

The paper proposes reliable channel for medical uses via Physical Layer. The purpose is to serve medical data transmission from WBAN through the UMTS. This study is focusing on applying coding theory to carry high reliability and robustness, in order to satisfy various QoS requirements of medical data. The aim is to build Medical Network Channel that transmits WBAN medical data through the UMTS. The design of extra channel coding is considered as concatenated techniques. The method applies adaptive outer code with inner UMTS code. The accomplishment of QoS is investigated with numerical results proven under AWGN and Rayleigh fading.

A new side information update method of error correction decoder for distributed video coding is proposed. This method improves the quality of side information. The side information values are updated using both the values of quantization index and its quantization interval. Side information update method reduces the amount of parities transmitted to decode quantization index.

When carrying out computer programming, the process of checking and correcting errors in the source code is essential work for the completion of the program. Non-computer majors who are learning programming for the first time receive feedback from instructors to correct errors that occur when writing the source code. However, in a learning environment where the time for the learner to practice alone is long, such as an online learning environment, the learner starts to feel many difficulties in solving program errors by himself/herself. Therefore, training on how to check and correct errors after writing the program source code is necessary. In this paper, various types of errors that can occur in a Python program were described, the errors were classified into simple errors and complex errors according to the characteristics of the errors, and the distributions of errors by Python grammar category were analyzed. In addition, a coding learning process to refer error lists was designed to present a coding learning method that enables learners to solve program errors by themselves.

The Challenges of Error Coding Scheme for Verbal Inflections in Child L2 English

This study shows a streamline of the schema change for analyzing English verb usages, depending on linguistic convergence of taxonomy, coding, and display. A Korean L1 child’s developmental knowledge and use of English verbal morphology in the EFL context were observed for one year (Subject's age 8;8 ? 9;8) with a focus on the types and distributions of (non-)target-like forms in the written language. The first coding scheme followed the approach of Taylor (1975) which arrayed all the verb types in a row. In the manner of inductive and inclusive, the second schema was developed in three-dimensional taxonomy following the error matrix by Corder (1981) and the error counting approach by Unsworth (2008). The accurate and inaccurate instances of conjugation and functional verbs were counted for an analysis of the relationship between frequency and accuracy in use. Using the Hierarchical Cluster analysis, the similarity of each verb distribution was displayed on a scatter plot. The final multi-coding scheme checked individually all the verbal inflections and separated overt forms from covert errors. An error corpus was constructed using the filtering function of MS Excel. The result presented the frequencies of accurate forms, inaccurate forms, and inaccurate uses. The purpose of this study is to show what challenges error coders face in practice. The methodological and progressive error coding approaches may enhance the efficiency for naive error coders and the study of applied linguistics. A typological and qualitative analysis will be followed to interpret interlanguage of the learner.
Error Control Coding and Space-Time MMSE Multiuser Detection in DS-CDMA Systems

We consider the use of error control coding in direct sequence-code-division multiple access (OS-COMA) systems that employ multiuser detection (MUO) and space diversity. The relative performance gain between Reed-Solomon (RS) code and convolutional code (CC) is well known in [1] for the single user, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In this case, RS codes outperform CC's at high signal-to-noise ratios. We find that this is not the case for the multiuser interference channel mentioned above. For useful error rates, we find that soft-decision CC's to be uniformly better than RS codes when used with DS-COMA modulation in multiuser space-time channels. In our development, we use the Gaussian approximation on the interference to determine performance error bounds for systems with low number of users. Then, we check their accuracy in error rate estimation via system's simulation. These performance bounds will in turn allow us to consider a large number of users where we can estimate the gain in user-capacity due to channel coding. Lastly, the use of turbo codes is considered where it is shown that they offer a coding gain of 2.5 dB relative to soft-decision CC.
Self-Checking Look-up Tables using Scalable Error Detection Coding (SEDC) Scheme

In this paper, we present Self-Checking look-up-table (LUT) based on Scalable Error Detection Coding (SEDC) scheme for use in fault-tolerant reconfigurable architectures. SEDC scheme has shorter latency than any other existing coding schemes for all unidirectional error detection and the LUT execution time remains unaffected with self-checking capabilities. SEDC scheme partitions the contents of LUT into combinations of 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-bit segments and generates corresponding check codes in parallel. We show that the proposed LUT with SEDC performs better than LUT with traditional Berger as well as Partitioned Berger Coding schemes. For 32-bit data, LUT with SEDC takes 39% less area and 6.6 times faster for self-checking than LUT with traditional Berger Coding scheme.

To accomplish error resilience, we first partition one data into several data using the data partitioning, and we control the coding rate of the convolution coding according to the importance of the partitioned data. In this algorithm, we suggest and analyze the efficient rate control algorithm considering convolution code rate.

In this paper, we investigate the error performance of a serially concatenated system using a nonrecursive convolutional code as the outer code and a recursive QPSK space-time trellis code as the inner code on quasi-static and rapid Rayleigh fading channels. At the receiver, we consider iterative decoding based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm. The performance is evaluated by means of computer simulations and it is shown that better error performance can be obtained by using low complexity outer and/or inner codes and the Euclidean distance criterion based recursive space-time inner codes. We also obtain new systems with large number of trasmit and/or receive antennas providing good error performance.

In this paper, we propose a new error concealment (EC) method using inter-layer correlation for scalable video coding. In the proposed method, the auxiliary motion vector (MV) and the auxiliary mode number (MN) of intra prediction are interleaved into the bitstream to recover the corrupted frame. In order to reduce the bit rate, the proposed method encodes the difference between the original and the predicted values of the MV and MN instead of the original values. Experimental results show that the proposed EC outperforms the conventional EC by 2.8 dB to 6.7 dB.
Error Resilience in Image Transmission Using LVQ and Turbo Coding

In this paper, we propose a joint coding system for still images using source coding and powerful error correcting code schemes. Our system comprises an LVQ (lattice vector quantization) source coding for wavelet transformed images and turbo coding for channel coding. The parameters of the image encoder and channel encoder have been optimized for an n-D (dimension) cubic lattice (D$_{n}$, Z$_{n}$), parallel concatenation fur two simple RSC (recursive systematic convolutional code) and an interleaver. For decoding the received image in the case of the AWGN (additive white gaussian noise) channel, we used an iterative joint source-channel decoding algorithm for a SISO (soft-input soft-output) MAP (maximum a posteriori) module. The performance of transmission system has been evaluated in the PSNR, BER and iteration times. A very small degradation of the PSNR and an improvement in BER were compared to a system without joint source-channel decoding at the input of the receiver.ver.

A new approach of error concealment using a digital watermarking technique for interframe video coding is presented in this paper. In the proposed method, the most important feature of the reference frame is extracted. Then, this feature is embedded into the prediction error of current frame prior to transmission. Error concealment is achieved by means of recovering the erroneous reference frame using the embedded data before the reconstruction of current frame is performed. Simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

본 논문에서는 DS-CDMA 시스템 구현 시 복잡성을 감소시키는 다중접속간섭 등의 여러 감쇠 요인을 고려하여 이를 개선시킬 수 있는 FS MC-CDMA 시스템의 성능을 분석하고 열악한 무선 모바일 환경에서 성능 개선기법인 BCH 부호화기법을 채용하여 FS MC-CDMA 시스템의 성능을 개선하였다. 또한 차세대 무선 모바일 통신 채널 환경으로는 나카가미 페이딩을 적용하여 FS MC-CDMA 시스템의 성능을 분석하여 검토하였다.
In this paper, we analysis the error performance improvement of the FS MC-CDMA, whose information data are spread spectrum with direct sequences(DS), and each subband signal is transmitted using a subcarrier frequency, combining BCH code in Mobile communication channels which is characterized by Nakagami fading. The effect of co-channel interference on the block error performance is also studied in this paper. As a results of study, the coding techniques provides more efficient improvement than non-coding, but the coding techniques are required more band as many coding rate. Our study demonstrates that the system is combined coding techniques, the amount of improvement is capable of efficiently exploiting over the Nakagami fading.

A compressed video bitstream is sensitive to errors that may severely degrade the reconstructed images even when the bit error rate is small. One approach to combat the impact of such errors is the use of error concealment at the decoder without increasing the bit rate or changing the encoder. For spatial-error concealment, we propose a method featuring edge continuity and texture preservation as well as low computation to reconstruct more visually acceptable images. Aiming at temporal error concealment, we propose a two-step algorithm based on block matching principles in which the assumption of smooth and uniform motion for some adjacent blocks is adopted. As simulation results show, the proposed spatial and temporal methods provide better reconstruction quality for damaged images than other methods.

Transform image coding using DCT is proved to be efficient in the absence of channel error but its performance degrades rapidly over noisy channel. In this paper, in the case of appling bit selcetive error correction coding that protects some significant bits in a codeword, an efficient allocation method of imformation bits and additive redundancy bits used for quantization and error correction coding respectively under constant transmission bit rate is proposed, and its performance is analyzed. As a result, without increasing trasmission bit rate, PSNR can be improved up to 7~8 [dB] below bit error rate $10^2$ and the image without blocking effect caused by bit error resulted from channel noise can be recostructed.

본 논문에서는 윤곽선의 다각근사화시 발생하는 오차신호를 표본화하고 표본화된 신호를 부호화하기 위한 새로운 변환을 제안한다. 제안하는 방법은 다각근사화시 발생하는 윤곽선의 단편들이 완만한 곡선의 형태를 갖고 양 끝점이 0이라는 특징을 고려해서 르장드르 다항식에 기반한 새로운 변환을 제안한다. 제안한 방법은, 기존의 방법인 이산여현변환, 이산정현변환 등과 변환부호화 이득면에서 비교해 볼 때 우수한 결과를 얻었다.
