본 논문은 유럽/아일랜드, 근대/전통이라는 이분법적 인식론이 베케트 연구에서 작동하는 방식의 지형도를 그려보고, 베케트와 아일랜드 문예부흥운동과의 관계, 아일랜드 정체성, 아일랜드의 근대성의 재고를 통해 이러한 이항대립적 사고를 지양할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다.

This paper focuses on the problems of binary thinking found in Beckett studies: the binary of Europe and Ireland and its concomitant binary of the modern and traditional. After briefly outlining the genealogy of the Irish-or-European Beckett criticism, I suggest three fields of research (Beckett’s relationship with the Irish Literary Revival, the problem of Irishness and the Irish context of modernism/ modernity) in which the binary opposition of Europe and Ireland and of modernity and tradition can be problematized more fruitfully.

본고는 김승옥의 초기 소설인 「환상수첩」을 대상으로 하여 김승옥 텍스트의 특징으로 여겨지는 이항대립적인 구도를 새롭게 조망해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 해체적 사유를 원용하여 이항대립적인 구도가 무화(無化)되면서 새롭게 가시화되는 지점들에 주목하였다. 해체 전략은 이항대립적인 두 항을 확인하는 것에서부터 시작하여 두 항이 서로 대등한 관계가 아님을 밝히고 이항대립적인 두 항의 관계를 새롭게 재구성하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 「환상수첩」의 인물들이 ‘위악(僞惡)의 얼굴을 가진 자’와 ‘위악(僞惡)의 가면을 쓴 자’의 대립 구도에 놓여 있음을 확인하고 ‘위악의 얼굴을 가진 자’가 ‘위악의 가면을 쓴 자’에 대해 우위를 점하고 있음을 보였다. 다음으로 두 항의 관계를 전복시키는데, ‘위악의 얼굴을 가진 주체’가 60년대 삶의 담론이라고 할 수 있는 ‘자기 유지’ 담론을 충실히 따랐다면 ‘위악의 가면을 지닌 주체’는 차연의 운동 속에서 ‘자기 유지’ 담론을 넘어서는 삶의 방식을 모색하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이항대립적인 구도를 해체했을 때 새롭게 떠오르는 주체는 차연의 운동 속에서 타자성과 이질성을 실현시키며 삶을 살아가고 있는 존재로 구체화되었다. 이는 기존의 ‘자기 유지’ 담론이 구성한 삶과는 완전히 다른 ‘생존방식’을 택한 모습이었다.

This thesis was written to take a new look at the binary opposition structure shown in Kim Seung-ok’s early novel Hwansangsoochub which is considered a characteristic of his text. To this end, this research paid attention to the new notable points as the binary opposition structure was neutralized by citing deconstructive thinking. The dismantling strategy ranges from identifying a set of binary opposition, to identifying that one of the opposites takes precedence over the other, and to reconstructing the relationship between the two. In order to do so, it was confirmed that the characters in the novel were in a conflict between "the one with the face of perjury" and "the one with the mask of perjury". Then it was revealed that the former was dominant over the latter. Next, the relationship between the two opposites is overturned. It is revealed that while "the one with the face of perjury" faithfully followed the "self-preservation" discourse, which is referred to as the discourse of life in the 1960s, the "subject with mask of danger" sought a way beyond the "self-preservation" discourse along with the differance movement. The newly emerging subject that appeared when the binary opposition structure was dismantled was specified as a subject who leads a life realizing otherness and heterogeneity in pursuit of the differance movement. This reflects a totally different way to live where the existing "self-preservation" discourse had deconstructed.
