본고는 현대일본어에서 현저한 의미 확장을 보이는 형용사 ‘에구이(egui)’를 대상으로, 다의 구조와 평가 극성이 반전되는 메커니즘을 인지언어학적 관점에서 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본고에서는 ‘에구이’의 용법을 원형인 <신체적 자극/미각>, 파생된<부정적 평가/잔혹함>, 중립화된 <정도/강도>, 그리고 찬사를 나타내는 <긍정적 평가/탁월성>의 네 영역으로 분류하였다. 분석 결과, 부정에서 긍정으로의 극성 전환은 직접 일어나는 것이 아니라, 극성이 탈색된 ‘강도의 절대값’을 나타내는 <정도/강도> 단계를 매개로 실현됨을 확인하였다. 이러한 ‘절대치적 스키마’가 네트워크의 허브로 기능하며 긍정적 맥락과의 결합을 통해 ‘재극성화’를 유도함으로써, 본래 불쾌한 자극을 나타내던 어휘가 최상급의 찬사 표현으로 확장되는 것이다.

This study clarifies the polysemous structure and polarity-reversal mechanism of the Japanese adjective egui from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Its usage is categorized into four domains: the prototypical <Physical Stimulus/Taste>, <Negative Evaluation/Cruelty>, the neutralized <Degree/Intensity>, and <Positive Evaluation/Excellence>. The analysis reveals that the shift from negative to positive evaluation is mediated by the <Degree/Intensity> stage, where the evaluative polarity is bleached into an “absolute value of intensity”. This schema functions as a hub within the semantic network, triggering “re-polarization” in positive contexts. Consequently, a term originally denoting unpleasant stimuli expands into a superlative expression of praise.

本稿は、現代日本語において著しい意味拡張を遂げている形容詞｢えぐい｣を対象とし、その多義構造と評価極性が反転するメカニズムを、認知言語学的な観点から解明することを目的とする。まず、｢えぐい｣の用法を、プロトタイプである＜身体的刺激/味覚＞から、＜否定的評価/残酷さ＞、中立的な＜程度/強度＞、そして賞賛を表す＜肯定的評価/卓越性＞の四領域に分けた。分析の結果、否定から肯定への極性反転は直接起こるのではなく、極性が脱色された｢強度の絶対値｣を示す＜程度/強度＞の段階を媒介して実現することを明らかにした。この絶対値的スキーマが多義ネットワークのハブとして機能し、肯定的文脈との結合による｢再極性化｣を動機づけることで、本来は不快刺激から最大級の賞賛表現への拡張が可能となるのである。
