본 연구는 웹 기반형(web-based) 플랫폼 노동자의 임금 결정에 관한 연구이다. 이를 위해 2018년 9월 전 세계 적 플랫폼 노동시장 중 하나인 Freelancer.com에서 웹 크롤링(web-crawling)한 총 3,575명의 구직자 정보를 사용하 였으며, 전통적 노동시장에서 유의하였던 학력, 경력과 더불어 플랫폼 노동시장에서 새롭게 사용 가능해진 이전 고용주 에 의한 평가가 플랫폼 노동자의 임금상승에 유의한 영향을 주는지 OLS 및 QR 분석방법을 사용하여 추정하였다. OLS 분석결과 플랫폼 노동자의 임금은 과거 유의하였던 학력, 경력뿐 아니라 이전 고용주에 의한 평가(리뷰 수)에 의해서도 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 다만, QR 분석결과 플랫폼 노동자의 임금수준이 상승함에 따라 교육보다는 경력이 리뷰 수보다는 추천 수가 플랫폼 노동자의 임금상승에 더욱 유의미한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.

The purpose of this study was to find the wage determinants of web-based platform workers. For this purpose, a total of 3,575 web-based platform workers’ information from Freelancer.com, a global platform labor market, in September 2018 were used and whether or not newly available indicators such as evaluations by previous employers had a significant effect on the wage increase of platform workers using OLS and QR methods. As an OLS estimation results, the number of reviews, as well as education and experience, affects the wages of platform workers. However, as a result of the QR estimation, experience rather than education, recommendation rather than a review has a more significant effect on the wage of web-based platform workers as the wage level rises.

본 연구는 일과 생활의 경계관리(boundary work)를 중심으로 청년 웹 기반 플랫폼 노동자의 삶 전반을 심층적으로 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 웹 기반 플랫폼 노동을 주업으 로 삼은 만 19~39세 청년 11인을 대상으로 심층면담을 수행하고 근거이론방법(grounded theory method)으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 청년 웹 기반 플랫폼 노동자들은 초기에 일에 압 도되어 신체적･정신적 소진(burnout)을 경험했으나, 개인적 대응 전략을 통해 점차 일과 생활 의 물리적 시공간 경계를 회복하였다. 그러나 이러한 경계 회복의 이면에서는 새로운 양상이 발견되었다. 이들은 업무 외 시간을 자기개발에 투자하는 등, 생활을 일과 직업적 성장을 위한 수단으로 활용하는 경향을 보였다. 즉, 초기에 내용적으로 구분되어 있었던 일과 생활이 ‘성 장’이라는 가치 아래 융합되는 양상이 나타난 것이다. 이러한 현상은 신자유주의적 주체성을 내면화한 청년들이 고객 평가와 노동 기회가 직결되는 플랫폼 노동의 경쟁적 환경과 제도적 보호망의 부재로 인해 지속적인 성장 압박을 받는 결과로 해석된다. 결과적으로, 청년 웹 기 반 플랫폼 노동자들은 시간이 지나면서 일정 수준의 성장을 달성했음에도 불구하고 , 끝없이 성장을 추구하는 역설적 상황에 놓이게 됨을 발견하였다. 이러한 삶의 양태는 제도적 보호의 경계 밖에 위치한 이들의 취약성을 더욱 심화시킬 위험성을 내포하는 바, 본 연구는 제도적 보 호와 지원 강화의 필요성을 제언하고자 한다.

This study aims to comprehensively explore young web-based platform workers’ overall life experiences through the lens of boundary work. Interviews were conducted with 11 young workers aged 19 to 39 who have engaged in web-based platform work as their primary occupation, and the data were analyzed using the grounded theory method. The findings reveal that young web-based platform workers initially experienced physical and mental burnout due to overwhelming work demands. However, they gradually established physical spatiotemporal boundaries between work and life through individual coping strategies. Nonetheless, an unexpected pattern emerged beneath these boundaries. They used their non-work time for self-development and professional growth. In other words, work and life, initially distinct in content, gradually merged under the value of ‘growth.’ This phenomenon was interpreted as young workers with internalized neoliberal subjectivity facing continuous growth pressures in the competitive environment of platform work?where customer evaluations directly determine work opportunities?and in the absence of institutional protection. Consequently, these young platform workers found themselves in a paradox where they continued to pursue endless growth despite achieving certain levels of ‘growth.’ Because this lifestyle can exacerbate their vulnerability by positioning workers outside institutional protections, this study suggests that strengthening institutional protection and support is necessary.
