초등 수학 교과서의 수학 용어 정의 및 문장제에 사용된 표현의 문장 복잡성 비교 분석 KCI 등재

본 연구는 현행 초등 수학 교과서 내 주요 용어의 정의 및 단원평가의 문장제에 사용된 표현을 구문론적 관점에서 문장 복잡성(Yngve, 1960)에 따라 비교분석하였 다. 분석 결과, 교과서 내 용어의 정의와 문장제에 사용된 표현에서 저학년 교과서 의 문장 복잡성이 낮게 구성되었고, 각 용어의 개별 특성에 따라 문장 구조 및 형 태가 서로 다르게 나타나며, 전반적으로 간결하며 문장 복잡성이 낮게 해당 용어의 정의 및 문장제가 서술되었고 용어 정의의 문장이 문장제의 문장보다 복잡하게 구 성되었음을 알 수 있었다. 초등학생이 복잡한 문장으로 인하여 수학적 개념 학습의 어려움을 겪지 않도록 교과서 내 문장을 명확하게 서술하고, 적절한 시각적 자료를 함께 제시하며, 개별 학습자의 문해 수준에 알맞은 설명을 보다 섬세하게 고려하여 제공하는 등의 노력이 필요하다.
As the main mathematical concepts are presented and expressed in various ways through textbooks during the teaching and learning process, it is necessary to look at the representations used in elementary math textbooks to find effective guidance. This study analyzed sentences used in the definition of mathematical terms and unit assessments of current elementary mathematics textbooks according to word depth (Yngve, 1960) from a syntactic perspective. As a result of the analysis, it could be seen that the sentences in textbook were generally concise, the word depth was lower, and the sentence structure and form were different depending on the individual characteristics of each term. Also, the sentences in the lower grade textbooks were more easily constructed, and the sentences of the term definition were more complex than the sentences of the unit assessments. Efforts should be made to help learners learn mathematical concepts, such as clarifying sentences in textbooks, presenting visual materials together, and providing additional explanations to suit the level of individual learners.

본 연구의 목적은 '정보의 즉각적 인지가 가능하면서 미적 문화적 특수성을 내재'하고 있는 STA(Short-term Attractive) 정보의 인지적 특성을 파악하고 그에 맞는 시각화 속성과 표현 방법을 모색하는 것이다. 정보디자인과 인지심리학을 바탕으로 STA 정보의 인지적 특성을 도출하고, 정보의 노출빈도와 인지도 관계에 따른 정보 속성에 관한 선행연구를 토대로 STA 정보의 시각화 속성 네 가지를 도출하였다. 정보 인지적 측면에서 STA 정보의 주요 시각화 속성인 '이해 할만한(Understandable)', '간결성(Conciseness)'에 대한 주요 표현 방법으로 은유, 환유, Indexical Image와 Context의 활용, 수사학, 기억보조장치(Mnemonic Device)를 제안하였다. 정보의 감성적 지각 측면에서는 주요 시각화 속성인 '타당성(Relevance)', '가치 있는(Valuable)'에 대한 주요 표현 방법으로 익살, 패러디, 특수성, 친근감, 키치, 조형적 아름다움, 새로움을 제안하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 향후 표현 방법들과 정보 적용 환경에 따른 인지도 관계 분석을 진행하고자 한다.
This study aims to consider the display method of the STA information that holds aesthetic cultural distinctiveness with the capability of immediate recognition of information in the relationship between the exposed time and the degree of cognition. As an consideration on the display method of information in an efficient way according as 'information attributes', the purpose of this study is to identify the visualization attributes of the STA information and to seek out display methods accordingly. Based on the information design and cognitive psychology, the cognitive features of the STA information have been identified and four visualization attributes of the STA information have been found based on the preceding studies on the information attributes in line with the relationship between exposure frequency and the level of awareness. In terms of information recognition, a metaphor, metonymy, use of indexical image and context, rhetoric, and Mnemonic have been proposed as major display methods for 'Understandable' and 'Conciseness', which are the major visualization attributes of the STA information while humor, parody, distinctiveness, friendliness, kitsch, formative beauty and newness have been suggested as the major display methods of 'Relevance' and 'Valuable', which are the major visualization attributes from the perspective of sensitive perception of information. Based on the results of this study, I'm planning to come up with display methods and to proceed with analyzing the relationship of the degree of cognition in association with context.

Purpose: This study tried to identify changes in family burden after the introduction of the long-term care insurance and to examine the factors influencing subjective and objective caring burden and depression of family caregivers of elders receiving home-based long-term care. Methods: Data were collected from 203 family caregivers of elders from August 1 to 31, 2015 using questionnaires. They were analyzed in descriptive statistics, t test, ANOVA test, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of depression was 7.24, which suggested mild depression level. The subjective family burden was 2.71 and the objective burden 3.04. The factors affecting depression included subjective burden (t=5.08, p<.001), objective burden (t=2.80, p=.006), time of elderly care per day (t=-3.61, p< .001), caregiving duration (t=3.33, p=.001), age (t=3.13, p=.002), family relationship (t=2.48, p=.014), and economic status (t=1.99, p=.047). Conclusion: The family burden was most important influencing factor on caregiver’s depression. Therefore, services and supports to alleviate caregivers’ burden in the home-based care should be added to long-term care.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Kaltenborn-Evjenth concept functional glide (KEFG) on shoulder pain, range of motion (ROM), upper extremity dysfunction in breast cancer patients. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: In this study, 42 subjects were randomly assigned and distributed to 21 subjects in the KEFG group and 21 subjects in the Mulligan technique (MWM) group. Results: After the application of joint mobilization, pain decreased significantly in both groups, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. The ROM of the joint was significantly increased in both groups, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. The SPADI pain was significantly decreased in both groups, and the disability and total components were significant only in the KEFG group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: KEFG and MWM were found to be effective in improving shoulder pain, ROM and upper extremity dysfunction in breast cancer patients. KEFG is thought to be an intervention that can yield positive outcomes among breast cancer patients with upper extremity dysfunction.

Objective: Joint mobilization for arthrokinematics altered by the positional fault of chronic ankle instability (CAI) is an effective intervention for stabilization. In this study, we compared the effects of ankle dorsi flexion range of motion (DFROM) and dynamic balance ability (DBA) in CAI patients via passive joint mobilization (PJM), a method traditionally performed in previous studies, and active joint mobilization (AJM), a method that can have a greater effect on cortical excitability with spontaneous movements. Design: Single-blind two-arm randomized controlled trial Methods: A total of 30 participants were registered: 15 each to the PJM and AJM groups. Each participant received a total of 10 intervention sessions, 10 minutes per session, 5 times a week for 2 weeks. PJM used Maitland's mobilization method to apply joint mobilization with talus in the posterior direction and AJM used an angular joint motion to induce patient's voluntary motion of medial malleolus anterior gliding and lateral malleolus posterior gliding, respectively. DFROM of the ankle was measured by using tape and DBA was evaluated by using the balance system. Results: Significant improvement was observed after intervention in both the PJM and AJM groups except for the DBA-anterior and DBA-right variables of the PJM group. There were statistically significant differences between the AJM and PJM groups in the DFROM, DBA-anterior, DBA-posterior, and DBA-right variables. Conclusions: The overall improvement of DFROM and DBA was found to be more effective in joint mobilization including voluntary movement. When it is accompanied by voluntary movement, it further affects the neuromuscular system of the ankle.
Short-Term Wind Speed Forecast Based on Least Squares Support Vector Machine

There are many factors that affect the wind speed. In addition, the randomness of wind speed also leads to low prediction accuracy for wind speed. According to this situation, this paper constructs the short-time forecasting model based on the least squares support vector machines (LSSVM) to forecast the wind speed. The basis of the model used in this paper is support vector regression (SVR), which is used to calculate the regression relationships between the historical data and forecasting data of wind speed. In order to improve the forecast precision, historical data is clustered by cluster analysis so that the historical data whose changing trend is similar with the forecasting data can be filtered out. The filtered historical data is used as the training samples for SVR and the parameters would be optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO). The forecasting model is tested by actual data and the forecast precision is more accurate than the industry standards. The results prove the feasibility and reliability of the model.

We located a group of healthy young males (aged $20{\sim}30$) who had been taking a high dose (more than 5 g) of vitamin C daily for more than one year. We observed that this vitamin C group had plasma levels of vitamin C that were more than three times that of the control group. The control group had not taken any additional vitamin C except for that included in their diets. But the vitamin C group showed significantly lower amounts of Cu/ZnSOD, catalase and glutathione-s-transferase and lower activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in erythrocyte lysates than the control group. However, there was no difference in the plasma levels of lipid peroxides between the two groups. These results suggest that vitamin C offsets its own contribution to anti-oxidant activity by repressing the expression of anti-oxidant enzymes and also excludes the possibility that vitamin C acts as a pro-oxidant in vivo.
Short-term Associations of Air Pollution with Postneonatal Infant Death in Seoul, Korea, 1999-2003

Objective to assess whether exposure to air pollutants is associated with postneonatal infant death, using a timeseries methodology, between 1999 and 2003 in Seoul, Korea.. Methods We investigated the short-term effects of air pollution for 548,725 live births during the study period. The daily count of postneonatal infant deaths from all causes and from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) by birth order was analyzed by a Generalized Additive Poisson model, with controlling for the effects of seasonal trends, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and day of the week as covariates. Results During the study period, we observed 699 deaths from all causes and 47 deaths from SIDS. We did not find any significant associations between daily mortality and ambient levels of air pollutants except for CO and $NO_2$. The estimated relative risk of postneonatal infant death from all causes was 1.17 (95% CI=1.04-1.32) and 1.16 (95% CI=1.03-1.29) by IQR (interquartile range) for CO and $NO_2$ respectively. Also, we observed no clear trend of the mortality effects of air pollution by birth orders. Conclusion In conclusion, our findings suggest that air pollution, in general, influenced adversely postneonatal infant death from all-cause and SIDS although it was not statistically significant. This study may support that the rationale.
Long-term blood glucose prediction using deep learning-based noise reduction

The Artificial Pancreas System (APS) is a device designed to monitor blood glucose levels in real-time and automatically regulate insulin for diabetes patients. Blood glucose prediction plays a crucial role in these systems by enabling proactive responses to glucose variations, thereby preventing risks such as hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia and assisting patients in managing their condition effectively. However, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensor data often contain significant sensor noise. Without effectively reducing the sensor noise, prediction accuracy can be severely compromised. Therefore, we first present a deep learning (DL) method for noise reduction in CGM data and, second, propose a long-term blood glucose prediction approach based on the system response function, utilizing a multi-input(e.g., blood glucose, carbohydrate (CHO) intake, and insulin). In this study, simglucose, based on the UVA-PADOVA simulator, was utilized to test and evaluate the proposed methods. As a result, we found that noise reduction using deep learning (DL) was significantly more effective than conventional filtering methods. Furthermore, the proposed long-term blood glucose prediction approach reliably tracked blood glucose fluctuations in custom scenarios and accurately predicted daily glucose patterns. Even in random scenarios, the proposed model accurately captured blood glucose trends, closely aligning with actual BG values and demonstrating remarkable performance.

Photovoltaic power generation forecasting is crucial for energy management, smart grid construction, and energy markets. This study proposes a hybrid quantum?classical gated recurrent unit (HQGRU)-based framework for forecasting short-term photovoltaic power generation in a time-series manner. The HQGRU model uses a classical layer followed by a quantum embedding circuit to convert classical data into quantum data. Subsequently, variational quantum circuits are used for feature extraction. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed model, we used practical data on photovoltaic power generation and the weather in Busan, Republic of Korea. The results demonstrate the high accuracy of the proposed HQGRU model.
Long-Term Effect of Rigid Foot Orthosis in Children Older Than Six Years With Flexible Flat Foot

Objective To evaluate the long-term effect of a custom-made rigid foot orthosis (RFO) in children older than 6 years with pes planus (flat foot).Methods Medical records of 42 children diagnosed with flexible pes planus who were fitted with RFOs based on the inverted technique and underwent more than four consecutive radiological studies were reviewed. Resting calcaneal stance position (RCSP), anteroposterior talocalcaneal angle, lateral talocalcaneal angle, lateral talometatarsal angle, and calcaneal pitch were initially measured in both feet to evaluate alignment. Follow-up clinical and radiological evaluations were then performed at 12?18, 24?30, 36?42, and ≥48 months after RFO application. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate significant differences.Results Significant improvements in all radiological indicators and significant progression of RCSP toward the corrective direction were observed after RFO application relative to baseline measurements.Conclusion According to our findings, RFO can induce significant improvements in calcaneus-related radio-graphic indices and subsequently improve talus-related radiologic indices.

Objective To evaluate the long-term efficacy of mirabegron add-on therapy in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) based on an urodynamic study. Methods This retrospective study involved a chart audit of individuals with SCI who underwent two consecutive urodynamic studies between April 1, 2015 and April 1, 2018. After adding 50 mg of mirabegron once a day to the pre-existing antimuscarinic therapy for a period of, at least 6 months, the following variables were analyzed: change in cystometric capacity, change in bladder compliance, change in maximal detrusor pressure, change in reflex volume, and presence of significant leakage during filling cystometry. Results A total of 31 participants with a mean age of 41±15 years were included in the analysis. A significant increase in cystometric capacity (mean, 362 to 424 mL; p=0.03), reflex volume (mean, 251 to 329 mL; p=0.02), and bladder compliance (median, 12 to 18 mL/cmH2O; p=0.04) was observed. The presence of leakage during filling cystometry was significantly reduced (29% to 10%; p=0.03). Likewise, a non-significant decrease in the change in maximal detrusor pressure was observed (mean, 31 to 27 cmH2O; p=0.39). Conclusion Adding mirabegron to conventional antimuscarinics further improved urodynamic parameters in patients with chronic SCI, and sustained efficacy was observed in long-term use.

Objective To outline the association between the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) in the acute stage and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) of motor items several months later. Methods Seventy-nine infarct cases with middle-cerebral-artery region transferred to long-term rehabilitation facilities were analyzed. Patients were allocated to either the model-development group or the confirmatory group at a 2:1 ratio. Independent variables were based on the NIHSS during the acute care and on demographic factors such as age and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) before onset. Multivariate logistic analyses were performed to predict the independence of each FIM motor item. These models were evaluated in the confirmatory group.Results Multivariate logistic analyses in the model-development group (n=53) indicated that at least one NIHSS item was statistically significantly associated with the functional independence of a single FIM motor item. Of the NIHSS items, the affected lower extremity item was the most widely associated with 11 of the FIM motor items, except for eating and shower transfer. The affected upper extremity function was the second widely involved factor associated with 7 of the FIM motor items including eating, grooming, bathing, toileting, bed transfer, toilet transfer, and shower transfer. Age and mRS were also statistically significant contributing factors. The obtained predictive models were assessed in the confirmatory group (n=26); these were successful except for the stairs climb item.Conclusion In combination with age and pre-stroke status, the NIHSS items (especially the affected extremity items) may be useful for the prediction of long-term outcome in terms of activities in daily living.
Long-Term Outcome of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Korean Subjects

Objective To report the latest long-term outcome of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to analyze the predictors of prognosis.Methods Subjects who were diagnosed with ALS between January 2005 and December 2009 at a single institute were followed up until death or up to December 2014. Data regarding age, sex, date of onset, date of diagnosis, presence of bulbar symptoms on onset, date of initiation of non-invasive ventilation (NIV), and the date of tracheostomy were collected. Survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate analyses of the risk of death were performed using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results Among 212 suspicious subjects, definite ALS was diagnosed in 182 subjects. The survival rate at 3 and 5 years from onset was 61.5% and 40.1%, respectively, and the survival rate at 3 and 5 years post-diagnosis was 49.5% and 24.2%, respectively. Further, 134 patients (134/182, 73.6%) were initiated on NIV, and among them, 90 patients (90/182, 49.5%) underwent tracheostomy. Male gender and onset age of ≥65 years were independent predictors of adverse survival.Conclusion The analysis of long term survival in ALS showed excellent outcomes considering the overall poor prognosis of this disease.

Objective To investigate the long-term efficacy of rehabilitation following arthroscopic synovectomy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with biologic agents.Methods Arthroscopic synovectomy was performed in 29 joints of 17 patients, which were divided into two groups. Group 1 included arthroscopic synovectomy plus rehabilitation for 19 joints in 10 patients, and group 2 included arthroscopic synovectomy without rehabilitation for 10 joints in 7 patients. The Disease Activity Score C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP), Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI), and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) values (motor subscale) at 9.7 years after arthroscopic synovectomy were evaluated to identify the clinical factors related to outcomes.Results The increase in FIM score was significant in group 1 (p=0.05). HAQ-DI at 9 years was significantly decreased in group 1 (p=0.02). Therefore, arthroscopic synovectomy with rehabilitation was significant in improving FIM and HAQ-DI scores over a long period. Multiple regression analysis of FIM scores at 9 years indicated that rehabilitation (p=0.03) and disease duration (p=0.02) were significantly related to outcomes. FIM score at 9 years was significantly negatively correlated with disease duration (p=0.01, r=-0.58, Y=88.89-0.21X).Conclusion Rehabilitation following arthroscopic synovectomy was effective in achieving high FIM scores over time in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective To investigate the factors affecting prognosis of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for chronic refractory Achilles tendinopathy (AT).Methods Thirty-six patients (48 consecutive feet) with chronic AT (>6 months) and who underwent ESWT for ‘poor’ or ‘fair’ grade in Roles-Maudsley Score (RMS) after unsuccessful conservative treatment were included in the present study. A maximum of 12 sessions of ESWT were conducted until treatment success: RMS reached ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. Termination of ESWT for no response, or ‘poor’ or ‘fair’ grade was regarded as treatment failure. Immediate outcome, long-term outcome (telephone interview after mean 26 months), and factors affecting treatment success were analyzed.Results Numeric Rating Scale was significantly decreased at immediate and long-term follow-up. Success rate was 71.1% and 90.3%, respectively. Univariate logistic regression identified that immediate treatment success was associated with retrocalcaneal enthesophyte on X-ray (odds ratio [OR], 0.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.01?0.28), pretreatment abnormal ultrasonography echogenicity within Achilles tendon (OR, 18.89; 95% CI, 2.08?171.96), mean duration of ‘post-treatment soreness’ (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.33?0.94), and duration of ‘post-treatment soreness after first ESWT’ (OR, 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01?0.34). The duration of ‘post-treatment soreness after first ESWT’ was found to be the only factor associated with long-term success (OR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.10?0.99). Conclusion ESWT appears to be effective in achieving long-term success in chronic refractory AT. Immediate success was associated with absence of retrocalcaneal enthesophyte on X-ray, presence of pretreatment abnormal ultrasonography echogenicity, shorter mean duration of ‘post-treatment soreness’, and shorter duration of ‘post-treatment soreness after first ESWT’. The shorter duration of ‘post-treatment soreness after first ESWT’ was identified as the only positive prognostic parameter in achieving long-term success.

Objective To investigate the long-term outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on exercise capacity in diabetic (DM) and non-diabetic (non-DM) patients with myocardial infarction (MI). Methods Of the MI patients who received hospital-based CR from February 2012 to January 2014, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patients who continued follow-up through the outpatient clinic and community-based self-exercise after CR. A total of 37 patients (12 with DM and 25 without DM) were included in this study. Exercise capacity was measured by symptom-limited exercise tests before and after hospital-based CR and 1 year after the onset of MI. Results Before the CR, the DM group had significantly lower exercise capacity in exercise times, peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), and metabolic equivalent tasks (METs) than did the non-DM group. After the CR, both groups showed significantly improved exercise capacity, but the DM group had significantly lower exercise capacity in exercise times, submaximal rate pressure products (RPPsubmax), VO2peak, and METs. One year after the onset of the MI, the DM group had significantly lower exercise capacity in exercise times, RPPsubmax, and VO2peak than did the non-DM group, and neither group showed a significant difference in exercise capacity between before and after the CR. Conclusion As a result of continued follow-up through an outpatient clinic and community-based self-exercise after hospital-based CR in patients with MI, the DM group still had lower exercise capacity than did the non- DM group 1 year after the onset of MI, but both groups maintained their improved exercise capacity following hospital-based CR.

Objective To investigate the short-term effects of bipolar radiofrequency applied to sacral nerves to treat neurogenic detrusor overactivity in patients with spinal cord injury.Methods Ten patients with spinal cord injury with neurogenic detrusor overactivity were recruited. These subjects were randomized to two groups: intervention (n=5) and control (n=5), members of which received conventional treatment. Voiding diary, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire (ICIQ) and the urinary incontinence quality of life scale (IQOL) data were obtained and an urodynamic study (UDS) was performed before and after intervention. In the intervention group, percutaneous bipolar continuous radiofrequency (CRF) was performed on both the S2 and S3 nerves in each patient. Results In a comparison of daily frequency and number of urinary incontinence and ICIQ and IQOL scores at baseline and at 1 and 3 months after intervention, all variables achieved a significant effect for time (p<0.05). Regarding UDS parameters, pre/post intervention differences between baseline and 3-month post-intervention for volume at maximal detrusor pressure during filling and reflex detrusor volume at first contraction were significantly different between the two groups (p<0.05). However, pre/post intervention differences in maximum cystometric capacity and maximum detrusor pressure during filling were not significant between the two groups (p>0.05).Conclusion Percutaneous bipolar CRF applied to sacral nerves might be an effective therapy for neurogenic overactive bladder that reduces urinary incontinence and improves quality of life.

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection on spastic gastrocnemius (GCM) and tibialis posterior muscles (TPo) by using the foot pressure measurement system (FPMS).Methods Eighteen ambulatory CP patients were recruited in this study. BTX-A was injected into the GCM at a dose of 6?12 units/kg and TPo at a dose of 4?9 units/kg according to the severity of equinus and varus deformity. Foot contact pattern, pressure time integral (PTI), coronal index using the FPMS and Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), and visual inspection of gait pattern were used for evaluation of the therapeutic effect of BTX-A injection. Clinical and FPMS data were statistically analyzed according to the muscle group.Results A significant decrease in the MAS score of the GCM and TPo was observed, and spastic equinovarus pattern during gait showed improvement after injection. The GCM+TPo injection group showed a significant decrease in forefoot, lateral forefoot pad, and lateral column PTI, and a significant increase in hindfoot PTI and coronal index. In the GCM only injection group, forefoot PTI and lateral column PTI were significantly decreased and hindfoot PTI was significantly increased. The TPo only injection group showed a significant decrease in lateral column PTI and a significant increase in the coronal index. Change in PTI in the hindfoot showed a significant correlation with the change in MAS score of the GCM. Change in PTI of the lateral column and coronal index showed a significant correlation with the change in MAS score of the TPo. Conclusion The FPMS demonstrated the quantitative therapeutic effect of BTX-A on abnormal pressure distribution in equinovarus foot in detail. The FPMS can be a useful additional tool for evaluation of the effect of BTX-A injection.

Objective To investigate the long-term effect of low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) for plantar fasciitis (PF) according to ultrasonography (US) findings.Methods Thirty feet of 25 patients with clinical diagnosis of PF were enrolled and divided into two groups (Apparent-US and Uncertain-US) according to US findings, such as plantar fascia thickening or hypoechogenicity. Inclusion criteria were symptom duration >6 months and a fair or poor grade in Roles-Maudsley score (RMS). ESWT (0.10 mJ/mm2, 600 shocks) was given once a week for 6 weeks. Numeric rating scale (NRS) and RMS were evaluated prior to each ESWT session, at short-term follow-up (one week after all ESWT sessions) and long-term follow-up telephone interview (mean 24 months after ESWT). Good and excellent grade in RMS were considered as treatment success.Results Repeated measure ANOVA demonstrated that NRS significantly decreased with time after ESWT up to the long-term follow-up (time effect, p<0.001) without group-time interaction (p=0.641), indicating that ESWT equally decreased pain in both groups. Overall success rate was 63.3% (short-term follow-up) and 80.0% (long-term follow-up). In comparative analysis between groups, success rate of Apparent-US and Uncertain-US at short-term follow-up was 61.9% and 66.7%, respectively, and 85.7% and 66.7%, respectively, at long-term follow-up.Conclusion If other causes of heel pain are ruled out through meticulous physical examination and ultrasonography, low-energy ESWT in PF seems to be beneficial regardless of US findings. In terms of success rate, however, long-term outcome of Apparent-US appears to be superior to Uncertain-US.
