Objective To investigate how much formal caregivers know about caring for stroke patients, and whether they adequately provide it.Methods Formal caregivers, who worked for stroke patients at 8 hospitals (including 4 university hospitals, 2 rehabilitation hospitals, and 2 convalescent hospitals) participated in this study. The survey was based on a self-report questionnaire, with 6 categories containing a total of 48 questions about the specific care of stroke patients: the demographic characteristics of the caregivers, bed positioning, the provision of meals, position changes and transfers, the range of motion exercises, and caregiver training. Results A total of 217 caregivers were surveyed, and they were distributed as follows: 41% came from the university hospitals, 35% came from the rehabilitation hospitals, and 24% came from the convalescent hospitals. The percentages of correct answers were distributed as follows: 64.3% for bed positioning, 74.3% for providing meals, and 62.4% for position change and transfer. The total and subscale scores of the caregivers working at convalescent hospitals were significantly lower than those of the caregivers working at the other types of hospitals (p<0.05). Only 7.8% of the total participants received training on a regular basis. The caregivers obtained most of the information from caregiver associations (58.1%), and the majority of the caregivers (65.4%) were willing to receive training. Conclusion About one third (33.8%) of caregivers did not have adequate knowledge of how to properly care for stroke patients; in fact, a significant number of caregivers demonstrated inappropriate and insufficient knowledge in several areas. It is assumed that the provision of regular training, by rehabilitation experts, will improve the professionalism and knowledge of the caregivers, and positively affect patient outcomes.

Purpose: This study compared the walking ability of chronic stroke patients following either treadmill training with knowledge of the result (KR group) or treadmill training with knowledge of the performance (KP group). Methods: Nineteen patients with chronic stroke were recruited from a rehabilitation hospital. The patients were divided into two groups: a KR group (10 patients) and a KP group (9 patients). They received 30 minutes of neuro-developmental therapy and treadmill training 30 minutes, five times a week for three weeks. The gait parameters were measured before and after training using the Optogait system. Results: After the training periods, the KR group showed significant improvement in gait speed, cadence, step length of the unaffected limb, stance time of the affected limb, and functional gait assessment compared to the KP group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that treadmill training with KR was more effective in improving the gait speed and cadence, step length of the unaffected limb, stance time of the affected limb, and functional gait ability than the treadmill training with KP. Therefore, to improve the walking ability of stroke patients, it is necessary to consider treadmill training with KR. If it can be combined with conventional neurological physiotherapy, it would be an effective rehabilitation for stroke patients.

We evaluated whether group locomotor imagery training-combined knowledge of performance (KP) lead to improvements in gait function in community dwelling individuals with chronic stroke. Ten adults who had suffered a hemiparetic stroke at least 6 months earlier participated in group locomotor imagery training-combined KP for 5 weeks, twice per week, with 2 h intensive training. Dynamic gait index scores increased significantly after the group locomotor imagery training-combined KP. However, times for the timed up-and-go test did not improve significantly after the training. Group locomotor imagery training-combined KP may be a useful option for the relearning of gait performance for community dwelling individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke.

Purpose: Although the prevalence rate of chronic diseases is rapidly increasing due to an unhealthy diet in Korea, nurses may not have enough nutritional knowledge to educate their patients. This study investigated the level of nurses’ nutritional knowledge for chronic diseases as well as for strokes, and the needs for nurses’ nutritional education. Methods: This research is a descriptive research conducted from April to August of 2014, on 242 nurses who work with stroke patients, in two tertiary general hospitals in the city of Seoul, South Korea. Results: The average nutritional knowledge score of our subjects was 19.9±2.51 (range 12-24). The correct response rate was 83% which was higher than expected. However, many nurses (31-66%) answered incorrectly on items such as ‘Drinking low-fat milk is better than whole milk’, and ‘Seasoning with a large amount of soy sauce instead of salt can reduce sodium consumption’. We also found that nurses who received continuing education regarding nutrition scored higher than those who did not (p=.020). There was no correlation between nutritional knowledge and the need for nutritional education (r=.034, p=.601). Conclusion: The level of nutritional knowledge of the nurses was relatively low and irrelevant to the completion of nutrition courses during university or duration of experience. Rather, the relevance was higher when the nurse received nutrition-related training after graduating from university. Our results imply that continuous nutritional education is necessary for hospital nurses.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between sexual knowledge, frequency, satisfaction, marital intimacy, and depression levels in stroke survivors and their spouses. Methods: This study was a convenience sample of Korean men who had experienced a stroke and their spouses. The subjects were discharged from the hospital and received physical therapy. Data such as sexual knowledge, frequency, satisfaction, marital intimacy, and depression levels were collected from November 2005 to April 2006. Results: In a comparison of stroke survivors and their spouses, the survivors showed higher mean levels of sexual knowledge and marital intimacy. The levels of knowledge, frequency, satisfaction and marital intimacy were low and depression was mild in the subjects. There were significant correlations between sexual frequency, sexual satisfaction and marital intimacy. Also, subjects with lower levels of sexual satisfaction were more depressed. The spouses who possessed greater levels of sexual knowledge reported a higher frequency of sex and greater marital intimacy. In addition, spouses who reported feeling greater levels of marital intimacy experienced fewer depressive symptoms. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate a need for the development of sexual adaptation programs which could be effective in improving sexual knowledge, frequency, satisfaction, marital intimacy, and depression reported by stroke patients and their spouses. Ideally, these corrective programs should be administered before patients are discharged from the hospital.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of stair-walking training with knowledge of performance (KP) on balance and walking function in patients with stroke. The study utilized a single-subject experimental research design (A-B-A’). A patient with subacute stroke participated in the study. Experimental process consisted of comprised three phases (totaling 20 sessions): (1) baseline phase (5 sessions), (2) intervention phase (10 sessions), and (3) withdrawal phase (5 sessions). The outcome measures included the one-leg standing test (OLST), sit-to-stand test (STS), Berg balance scale (BBS), and 10-meter walk test (10MWT). During the intervention phase, stair-walking training with KP, focusing on head and trunk postures as well as lower limb motion, was applied for 30 minutes. However, this training was not implemented during the baseline and withdrawal phases. The results showed significant improvements in OLST, STS, BBS, and 10MWT scores during the intervention phase, and these gains were maintained during the withdrawal phase. The findings suggest that stair-walking training with KP may be effectively used to enhance balance and walking function in stroke survivors. This study provides valuable information for rehabilitation professionals seeking to establish useful stroke training programs in clinical practice. However, further studies with robust designs are required to confirm the results of this study.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dysphagia management education on the knowledge, practice, and stress. Methods : The subjects(education group: 39, control group: 39) were randomized selected among post stroke dysphagia patients. Before their education, their knowledge was significant relations with family type, hours of daily care; their practice was significant relations with age, monthly income, disease and stress had a sig-nificant relation with age. Results : Knowledge and practice were significantly increased based on education but stress did not. Control group showed no significant differences. After the education, their knowledge showed significant relations with feeding type, total duration of care work. Practice had significant relations with health status, disease, and feeding type. Also, there was no significant relations between the knowledge, practice and stress. Conclusion : The findings of this study suggest that the dysphagia management education for families caring for the post stroke dysphagia patients is effective for improving knowledge and practice.

Among the sources of anxiety and burden of family caregivers of stroke patients, this study investigated the role of self-efficacy and knowledge about care. Methods: Descriptive and correlational study design was used. One hundred and thirteen subjects were included. They were anticipated family caregivers of stroke patients. All patients were hospitalized at the intensive care unit (ICU) for the first time as a stroke patients. Data of family caregivers were collected during the time that patients were in the ICU with self-reported standardized questionnaire. Pearson's correlation coefficients and regression analysis were used to explore the role of self-efficacy and knowledge. Results: Self-efficacy was correlated with burden, but not with anxiety. Knowledge about care was correlated with anxiety and burden. Only knowledge about care was the significant predictor of anxiety and burden of anticipated family caregivers. Conclusion: The knowledge about care for stroke patients is important especially to the family caregivers who have to care stroke patients for the first time to reduce their anxiety and burden.

This study aimed to examine the effects of treadmill walking training combined with action observation training and knowledge of performance on balance, walking, and activities of daily living in a single patient with chronic stroke. The intervention was conducted three times per week for four weeks, in which the participant watched action observation training for ten minutes, received knowledge of performance, and then performed treadmill walking training twice, resulting in a total of forty minutes of intervention per session. Quantitative walking ability was assessed using the ten-meter walking test and the six-minute walking test, qualitative walking ability was assessed using the Wisconsin gait scale, functional walking ability was assessed using the timed up and go test and the figure of eight walk test, balance ability was assessed using the berg balance scale and the four square step test, and activities of daily living were assessed using the modified barthel index before and after the intervention. The results showed improvements in walking speed and endurance in the ten-meter walking test and the six-minute walking test, enhanced functional mobility in the timed up and go test and the figure of eight walk test, and a slight improvement in balance ability in the berg balance scale, whereas the four square step test, the wisconsin gait scale, and the modified barthel index showed no significant changes. These findings indicate that treadmill walking training combined with action observation training and knowledge of performance has positive effects on walking speed, functional mobility, and balance in patients with chronic stroke, but has limited effects on activities of daily living and qualitative aspects of walking, suggesting its potential use as a rehabilitation strategy in clinical practice.
