범세계적으로 전개되고 있는 인구의 고령화로 인하여 우리나라는 근래 고령사회를 맞이했으며, 머지 않아 초고령사회로 변모될 것으로 전망된다. 고령화추세에 따라 성공적 노화를 설명하는 이론들도 등장하고 있는데, 본고에서는 고전적인 분리이론과 활동이론, 근래의 선택적 최적화 이론, 그리고 활 동이론을 근대적인 관점에서 확장한 Rowe와 Kahn의 성공적 노화 모델의 특성을 비교하고 또 노인을 다양한 관점에서 이해해야 함을 강조했다. 즉 노화로 인해 겪을 수 있는 신체적, 정신적, 또는 사회 적 제한에 따라 개인마다 다양한 조건에서 살아가는 점을 고려하여 기존의 성공적 노화 이론이 절충 적으로 적용 및 해석되어야 한다는 점을 논의했다.

The present article aimed at reviewing theories of successful aging and reconceptualizing growing old and Korean older adults in the aged society. Disengagement theory, activity theory, selective optimization with compensation (SOC), and Rowe and Kahn’s model of successful aging were reviewed and compared in terms of the foundations of conceptualizations of aging, basic assumptions of theories. It is emphasized that older adults should be reconsidered as they are becoming old with their physical, psychological and social aging. It is also emphasized that the theories of successful aging should be eclectically applied to understand the elderly.

발테스와 발테스(Baltes and Baltes)에 의해 제안된 선택․적정화․보완(Selective Optimization with Compensation: SOC) 모델은 노인들이 노화에 따른 상실에도 불구하고 주어진 능력에 적합한 활동을 선택하고 보유한 기술을 최적화하며 상실한 것을 보완함으로써 성공적 노화에 이를 수 있다고 설명한다. 본 연구는 SOC 모델이 다양한 상태의 노년기에도 성공적 노화를 위하여 노년기 삶을 재구성하는 발달과업을 수행하는 전략으로서 갖는 활용성에 주목하여, 여타 성공적 노화 접근과 차별성을 갖는 SOC 모델의 특징적 장점들을 재조명하고, SOC 모델을 활용하여 노인복지와 교육현장에서 활용할 수 있도록 다양한 상태의 노년층에게 적합한 성공적 노화를 위한 효과적인 개입방법과 전략의 개발 가능성을 탐색하는데 그 목적을 두고자 한다. 이를 위하여 SOC 모델이 갖는 유용성에 대해 구체적으로 알아보고, SOC 모델을 활용하여 개인별 가치선호, 건강상태, 보유자원의 상이한 특성별로 유형화한 노인들에게 적용 가능한 노인복지 및 교육의 실천적 개입전략을 제시해 보았다. 이를 통하여 다양한 상황의 차이에도 불구하고 성공적 노화를 위한 전략이 가능함을 보여주는 SOC 모델을 노인복지의 실천적 접근으로 활용하는데 기여하고자 하였다.

The Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) model proposed by Baltes and Baltes(1990) explains that despite the loss from aging, the elderly may achieve successful aging based on compensation of the loss made as they select activities suitable to their capabilities and optimize their skills. Noticing the application of SOC model as a strategy to implement development tasks restructuring the elderly life for successful aging in various steps of aging, this paper aims to shed new light upon advantages uniquely held by SOC model differentiated from other successful aging approaches and explore effective interventions and strategy development potentials for successful aging appropriate to the elderly of diverse status by using the SOC model so that these advantages and strategies can be used in the area of elderly people’s welfare and education sites. In order to achieve these aims, we reviewed usefulness of the model and presented strategies for the elderly welfare applicable to the elderly typified based on different value preferences, health conditions, and resource differences as well as practical intervention of education. This was aimed at contributing to application of SOC model as a practical approach because the model proved the possibility of strategies for successful aging despite differences in diverse circumstances faced by the elderly.
