헤 셸은 대표작 『예언자들』(The Prophets)을 비롯한 인간 3부작 『사람은 혼자가 아니 다』(Man Is Not Alone), 『누가 사람인가?』(Who Is Man?), 『사람을 찾는 하느 님』(God in Search of Man)에서 예언자를 단순한 신의 도구가 아니라, 하나님의 정 념(pathos)에 공감하고 응답하는 윤리적 존재로 규정하였다.

This study compares Abraham Joshua Heschel’s understanding of the “prophet” with Carl Gustav Jung’s concept of the “Son of Man” ( ), in order to examine the relationship between human existence and divine reality from theological and psychological perspectives. In The Prophets and his anthropological trilogy—Man Is Not Alone, Who Is Man?, and God in Search of Man—Heschel presents the prophet not as a passive instrument of God but as a moral being who empathizes with God’s pathos and responds to it. The prophet proclaims divine justice in the face of social injustice, embodying both divine and human suffering. Jung, by contrast, interprets the “Son of Man” in Answer to Job and Aion as a symbol of the Self that integrates the tensions between unconscious and conscious, good and evil. The Son of Man is not merely a recipient of revelation but a mediating figure through whom both God and humanity undergo moral awakening and maturation. Despite their different points of departure—external revelation for Heschel’s prophet and inner integration for Jung’s Son of Man—both reveal humanity’s participation in the divine will and its transformative implications. Heschel’s prophet highlights communal responsibility and ethical decision, whereas Jung’s Son of Man emphasizes reconciliation between divine reality and the human psyche through self-integration. By bringing these perspectives into dialogue, this study broadens the understanding of humanity, offering practical theology a framework that unites inner spiritual growth with social responsibility. In an age of fractured human identity, the symbols of the prophet and the Son of Man provide renewed awareness of human existence before the transcendent and model the kind of spiritual and ethical leadership demanded today.

This study investigates a theological understanding of divine love which emanates from divine pathos, focusing on the exegetical interpre- tation of Hosea 2: 4-25[2-23], and 4: 1-19. The first focal point of this research is to explore theological implications involved the people and land in the book of Hosea. The second focal point of this research is to understand divine love which embraces the sinful people and the polluted land. In Hosea's prophetic messages, Israel has forsaken YHWH and has sought help from other gods and other nations. The worship of YHWH is defiled and there is no distinction between him and foreign gods. The results of this lack of knowledge of God is that Israel failed in keeping and observing the divine law in the land. The people of YHWH have forgotten the values of conducting behavior as God's people. There is the superficial worship practice in the land: sacrifice and burnt offerings without acknowledging what God requires of the worshippers. Israel's constant rebellion by breaking the law and by worshipping idolatry has also polluted the land which God gave to his people as inheritance. Therefore, God suffers from the sinful people and the polluted land. However, divine compassionate love emanated from divine pathos toward Israel leaves room for reconciliation and restoration. On the basis of forgiveness divine compassion heals a broken relationship between YHWH and Israel. In divine pathos Hosea's prophetic messages bear divine passionate love. YHWH justifies his love with the statement: "I am God no human, the Holy One in your midst."(Ho 11: 9) This is essential for God's love in the divine holiness. This power of love emanating from divine suffering embraces the sinful people and the polluted land. This love creates a new relationship between YHWH and his people and renews a universal covenant between human and natural world(Ho 2: 20-25[18-23]).
