The representative events that brought great changes to Zainichi society are Jeju April 3 Incident(1948) and the Repatriation Project(1959∼1984). Owing to two incidents, there was the movement of many Koreans between the South & North Korea and Japan. Since this realistic lives of Zainichi Koreans are not well known not only in Japan but also in Korea, the meaning that director Yang Yonghi's family history has been made into 3 popular media films is important. Above all, what is interesting about director Yang Yonghi's documentaries is the process of continuous recording the trajectory of family history, adding records whenever something new happens to her family members. The previous history of her family was revealed through the latest works “Soup and Ideology” following “Dear Pyongyang” and “Goodbye Pyongyang,” which shows the appearance of the family history connecting Jeju to Pyongyang. These documentaries show the experiential history of Zainichi Koreans. As long as Yang Yonghi, a second-generation resident in Japan, and his nephew Sunhwa, a second-generation North Korean returnee, are connected, her family story is expected to find a point of contact newly in future. Director Yang Yonghi's documentary can be said to show connects and expands between the South & North Korea and Japan through the records of her family history.

This essay applies Marianne Hirsch’s theory of the postmemory generation to Jaehee Hong’s My Father’s Emails (2014) and Yonghi Yang’s Dear Pyongyang (2006), personal documentaries on their father’s traumatic experiences during the Korean War as seen from the daughters’ perspectives. Both documentaries underscore the father’s absence and silence and the lack of direct knowledge of the Korean War and subsequent ideological conflicts, two important traits of the experiences of the postmemory generation. First, inspired by feminist discourses on historical accounts and Hirsch’s theory of postmemory, I focus on how these female filmmakers utilize personal memories of their fathers to question the official historical narrative, dominated by frustrated and violent manhood, in postwar South Korean cinema. Second, this essay also deals with My Father’s Emails and Dear Pyongyang as important examples that challenge traditional definitions of documentary; both films consist of archival photography as well as fictional and interpretative elements?fluctuating between remembrance and oblivion or between understanding and confusion. The unsettled relations between the fathers and daughters, in a way, well reflect the ambiguous role of personal documentaries in resolving the gap between the war survivors and the postmemory and postwar generation in South Korea.

This study aims to clarify the stratified meanings of the space - "Pyeongyang" - among Korean residents in Japan, centering on the arguments of a locality. Ultimately, it is to provide insight on the healing effects of the locality of Pyeongyang. Through the three films of director Yeonghui Yang, examined are the complex meanings of 'Pyeongyang,' 'North Korea,' which is the other motherland of Korean residents in Japan. The significance of Pyeongyang is not the same among Korean residents in Japan. Rather, it is stratified among nationalities and generations depending on the subject of narration. Even with the subject of narration fixed, the significance of Pyeongyang is not immutable but flexible depending on one's experience. Significance of Pyeongyang among Korean Residents in Japan is as follows. In time of North Korea's 'homecoming project,' Pyeongyang was an ideal space with no discrimination or oppression to the 1st generation of Korean residents in Japan. Yet, Pyeongyang that he faced through his son was changed from an ideal space to a space of reality where the joy of meeting and sadness of separation coexisted, and from an open space to a closed one. Since the father recognized it as a space where the family was to live regardless of the ideological orientation, however, he would be loyal to Pyeongyang and never betray his motherland. To the 2nd generation of Korean residents in Japan, Pyeongyang is 'the nation' which can neither be understood nor be accepted. On the other hand, however, it is a base where a new family settled down independently and the base of current existences. In terms of emotional ideology, Pyeongyang is a space of the strange third person that restrains existences. In terms of geography and physics, it is a space of the first person where 'I' and 'my family' could survive. These two inconsistent meanings are similar to the emotions between the 2nd generation Korean resident in Japan and his father as the 1st generation. The three films of Yeonghui Yang are not limited to showing the gap between the images of Pyeongyang that the two generations had but go further toward suggesting the way to narrow it down and make a contact point as well as exploring the healing effects. The process of communicating with the space for the son to understand Pyeongyang is interlinked with the process of communicating with and understanding the father. This way, the two different meanings of Pyeongyang between the 1st and 2nd generations met at one point - family. Both encountered the actual circumstances of Pyeongyang as the first person space where a family should overcome ideological prejudices and live together. In the films, the meaning of space as a boundary of a nation-state is erased through a dark change, and the meaning of the emptied space is filled with family. The image of North Korea as a nation-state and that of Pyeongyang as a capital of revolution are erased and replaced with that of a place where someone you miss lives and waits for you.
